KNBR's Bruce calls for Nelson's head; Cal/Stanford host Oregon schools; Saturday media notes

CAL and Stanford are both at home and coincidentally play the Oregon schools in key PAC-10 showdowns today; the Cardinal have a tug-of-war with PAC-10 power and leader Oregon at 12: 30 (ABC), while the Bears take on pesky neighbor Oregon State at 4 PM.

Bench water game for both squads. Stanford is a prohibitive long shot against multi-faceted Oregon, which systematically destroyed and outplayed USC on Halloween night. If Jim Harbaugh can somehow motivate the Cardinal to steal an unlikely win against a Ducks team that may be overlooking this contest, you can add Stanford to the bowl list.

CAL is poised to win its fourth consecutive PAC-10 game against the Beavers; QB Kevin Riley seems to have regained his steadiness and look for Jahvid Best to run rough shod against the Beavers this evening at Memorial Stadium.

**The Warriors looked positively dreadful Friday night, in a "why the hell are we here?" look, getting poleaxed by those daunting LA Clippers, 118-90 and it wasn't that close.

Ater the game on KNBR, host Damon Bruce did everything but call for Don Nelson to be deported to Gitmo. Oh, yeah, Bruce, who is the only tonsil on the station that dares not drink the early-season cool-aid, formally called for Nellie's head. This is nothing new, as Bruce has called for Nellie's head late last season and into this season. He chose more terse words on Friday night.

Bruce is probably right, only he better hope the Warriors top brass isn't as picky as the SF Giants and Larry Baer, who were less then thrilled with Bruce' critiques and had him removed from the AT&T broadcast bunker for Giants' home games last year.

Bruce indeed was 'on the loose Friday; only hope his latest tirade against the Dubs doesn't equate to radio purgatory at sister station 1050, where he wax poetic about Indiana basketball and Bob Knight stories.

**Speaking of the Warriors, and who can't these days, (wink, wink) got a chance to watch Gary St. Jean on Comcast Sportsnet' pre-and-post game shows. My first impression was "oh great, 'this guy's gonna be a joke'", but St. Jean, the ex-coach and GM of the Dubs, is refreshingly funny, observant, undeniably knowledgeable and has very keen insight. He's obviously comfortable on TV and has mastered a presence in very short time. Good move for the Comcast guys.
