Shaskey to KNBR? A Rumor with Teeth; Radio Daze

  1. You know Copeland will playing the race card if he gets fired - no matter how bad his show and ratings are. At the same time, it's hard not to think that Brian Murphy has to be Cumulus' top target because he is probably getting paid the most.

  2. In a way, I wouldn't be surprised if Shasky goes to KNBR. Ever since Bonta left 95.7, the Morning Roast hasn't really been the same. Yes, the Shasky and Spadoni pairing is still new and it takes time to build chemistry on a new show, but there's already signs that this version of the Morning Roast (Shasky and Spadoni or the two Joe's if you will), may not last long. Feels like there's a generation gap between the two. Shasky is in his early 40's, Spadoni is in his early 30's. Shasky feels like the old man on the show at times, and you can tell it's bothering Shasky and he probably misses Bonta on the show, someone he's closer in age with and someone he can relate to more.

  3. The thing is, if Shasky goes to KNBR, who is he replacing? Yes, Rich mentioned Afternoon Drive and him possibly taking over Dirty Work, but Copes is part of the future of KNBR, and yeah, Copes can be controversial at times because he likes to stir stuff up on Twitter, but I don't see Copes going anywhere unless he gets moved to the morning show where he really cut his teeth at KNBR as a producer on the Murph and Mac show, and maybe work with Murph and Markus?

Derek Papa is going to be a big part of the future of KNBR as well. With the Greg Papa news recently, I can't imagine KNBR wanting to replace Derek Papa with all the stuff going on with his Dad. That would be poor timing and bad taste, especially since this is Derek's first time as an on air host. Unless Derek goes back to the producer role and maybe produces this new show with Shasky or maybe goes with Copes to another timeslot or maybe ends up working with his Dad again and maybe help produce and be a part of Greg Papa's show with Greg Silver?

  4. Also, if Shasky went to KNBR, would he take Bonta with him? Yes, Bonta is technically not an on air radio host anymore, but he still does weekly hits on 95.7 where he appears on the Morning Roast with Spadoni and Shasky on Fridays at 9 AM. If Shasky went to KNBR, would he have Bonta in some ways be a part of his new show and/or have Bonta do weekly hits on KNBR on Shasky new show? Bonta and Shasky had a radio magic. Would be cool to see them pair up again one day, even if it's on KNBR

    1. Radio magic?? You are really setting the bar low. Bonta is a very good guy, but average at best as a talk show host.
Cannot believe anyone would want Shasky. He is an amateur.

    2. @8:39- It really was radio magic. Bonta and Shasky were doing numbers and getting better ratings than Murph and Mac in the mornings. Yeah, Murph and Mac wasn't what it once was, especially towards the end before Paulie Mac got let go, but the Morning Roast with Bonta and Shasky became an iconic morning show and one of 95.7's better shows in their brief history as a sports station.

    3. @8:39- Just curious, why do you think Bonta is average as a sports talk show host?

Bonta worked on his craft as a sports talk show host. When he worked with Greg Papa he was just starting out and essentially a new host. That was 9 years ago when he started at 95.7 to work with Greg Papa.

Through hard work and dedication, Bonta became one of the top sports talk show radio hosts here in the Bay Area. It probably helped him land his TV gig on NBC Sports Bay Area. Without him being on 95.7, he may not have been on NBC Sports Bay Area.

    4. @8:39- Shasky is cool. Shasky is another guy that worked on his craft and grew as a sports talk show host. This is essentially a new career for Shasky.

Yes, Shasky is a fan at heart, but the fact that there's rumors he possibly could be heading to KNBR and the fact that even Rich had good things to say about Shasky, that's really saying something and is a feather in Shasky's cap.

Yeah, Shasky may be demanding at times, especially if he doesn't have a co-host that can reach that same level of passion with him regarding the Giants, Niners, and Warriors like Bonta did, but you got to respect his passion as a fan and the fact that he truly loves his job as a sports talk show host. He's stated multiple times in the past that this is his dream job. A lot of sports talk show hosts don't have that same passion and can take or leave a job like this. Shasky is relatable because he's a regular guy and is a Giants, Niners, and Warrior fan like most of us here in the Bay Area.

    5. Just because you work on your "chosen" craft does not mean
you are going to be successful. I knew Bonta when he was a cub reporter covering high school games. Very good guy. I
watched the Giants' postgame show last night and I believe he is still a work in progress. No shame there. I do not believe he has reached his ceiling as yet. Not sure where Shasky is in his
development, but he has not moved the needle for me thus far.
He also should take a page out of Bonta's book re: humility.
I still am far from calling this duo "radio magic." Murph & Mac
were a tired act -- much like Kruk & Kuip. When I talk about
young talent on the radio, I mention Derek Papa. I think he is
very good at this point in his career. Never thought I would say this because I have never been a fan of his dad. Plus, Derek
has to put up with Copes, who cannot deal with the fact that
he might be wrong on occasion.

    6. @1:29- Yeah, Bonta has come a long way. Great to see his career progress the way that it has so far!

Yeah, the Giants TV pre and postgame show is a different deal than the Warriors TV pre and postgame show. First, they shorted Giants TV pre and postgame to 30 min so there's only so much they can cover in that amount of time, as opposed to the Warriors when they can unpack a lot in an hour for the TV pre and postgame show. Also, the Giants simply aren't as interesting as the Warriors, so I think Bonta has to work harder to pump up a midweek Giants game in the midst of a historically bad stretch for the Giants, as opposed to Warrior games where pretty much almost every Warrior game has a storyline to it and the game sells itself.

I also wonder if the fact that Bonta is not the main host for Giants TV pre and postgame could also be a factor. For the Warriors, he's the guy, but for the Giants, it's Laura Britt as the main host, with Bonta and Carlos Ramirez filling in on occasion as hosts.

Bonta showed on 95.7 that he can talk baseball, but I think he's fine on Giants TV pre and postgame, considering this is his first time really doing Giants TV pre and postgame. He's already developed a rapport with Sergio Romo, Shawn Estes, and Rich Aurilia, and I think he's already cool with George Kontos.

But yeah, with more reps, Bonta will be as comfortable doing Giants TV pre and postgame as he is Warriors TV pre and postgame. Not sure if Bonta will eventually take over Giants TV pre and postgame duties if Laura Britt eventually moves on or gets promoted to NBC like Ahmed Fareed did. Bonta could potentially be the next Greg Papa on NBC Sports Bay Area covering the Giants and the Warriors on the station, as well as the Niners.

    7. @1:29- Shasky is great. He's been spot on regarding the Giants recent struggles, and has went on Damon Bruce Sportsphone/1050 (when Damon Bruce was hosting Sportsphone and then went to 1050) type rants. Someone on one of these two stations has to tell it like it is about the Giants and Shasky does just that.

Just curious, what did you mean by humility? Shasky seems like a humble guy. Yes, he's been blessed but at the same time he does take the time to stop and appreciate what he has and being in this profession.

    8. @1:29- Yeah, agreed on Murph and Mac. They were kind of a tired act towards the end. They may have peaked in 2010, 2011, when there was euphoria around the Giants 2010 championship run and everyone tuned into their show everyday to talk Giants. They were even talking Giants during football season, but a lot of that was because the Niners were terrible in 2010.

As far as Kruk and Kuip, not sure I'm there with you. Yes, they're getting older and it's sad that they can't do as many road games anymore, but they're still sharp and can call a game well. Sometimes they make mistakes here and there, but they're still a top TV broadcast crew in the MLB.

    9. @1:29- Sorry for these multiple posts, but I wanted to address your points in different paragraphs as opposed to one long post. LOL.

Agreed on Derek Papa. I'm cool with Derek Papa and I interact with Derek Papa through the Youtube chat on his weekly podcast that he has. Derek is a good dude. Kind of goofy at times, but he's cool.

Even though he's still new as an on-air host, he's proven he can do the job, but I think him having a podcast has helped as well.

Copes is cool too, and I interact with him through the KNBR Youtube chat during their show. I hope to meet Copes and Derek in person at one of these KNBR meetups in the future... When did Copes not admit when he was wrong?

  7. Knbr is going to pay more than 95.7 or being released and needs a job?

  8. Why not bring back Kate Scott cannot be any worse and hits the so called demographics.

    1. Because if they brought back Kate they would only have 10k listeners left. Woke is over now, are you getting your mail by stagecoach still?

      Delete
    2. @11:56- Kate has left radio in the rearview mirror, at least for now it appears. Not sure her play-by-play duties would allow her to host a Bay Area sports talk radio show.

Would be cool to hear Kate on the Bay Area airwaves again, but it would be tough logistically considering the time difference, and she would probably have to do remote shows from Philly or wherever the Sixers are playing during NBA season.

Yes, Fitz did this for many years when he had his KNBR show and still called Warrior games and did the radio show from the Warriors road locations when they were on the road, but this may be different since Kate is not Bay Area based like she was back when she worked on KNBR and then 95.7. Plus, would we want to hear Kate talk about the Sixers or any of the other Philly sports teams on KNBR or 95.7? LOL

  11. I've made every attempt to give the new hosts a chance, but I just can't do it. I am a fan of Greg Pappa, but in his absence, I just can't stomach the 10-2 time slot and the afternoon 2-6 is absolutely horrible! I can barely pick up 95.7 in San Jose, so that is not an option. Since Howard Stern is off Sirius XM for the summer, I'm listening to "Yacht Rock" when I'm in my truck.

  12. I would love to see Bonta and shasky reunited at knbr and possibly giving them the 12 pm to 3pm. Make everyone’s show 3 hours

    1. @8:24- I actually would be cool with that. Bonta has previously stated that he likes working in the middays (10-2, Noon to 3) better, and even though he has an expanded role on NBC Sports Bay Area now, maybe he could cut back on it a little bit to go back to radio to work with Shasky on KNBR perhaps? I can see him doing that for Shasky, or maybe even Guru if the situation presented itself on either KNBR or 95.7.

Also working Noon-3 wouldn't conflict with Bonta's Warriors TV duties and when the Warriors have long nights (the TV postgame show ending around 10:30 pm or possibly 11 or 11:30 pm with some of those 8 PM PT games this upcoming season), Bonta won't have to turn around and do a morning radio show hours later and he can get some more sleep and do the family stuff before being on from Noon to 3 in this scenario.

We'll see what happens. Rich is usually not far off in these rumors or tidbits he gets from people who may work in radio.

    2. @8:24- I agree about the 3 hr shows. I think these 4 hr shows on both stations lose their steam when they get to that 4th hr. Some of these show replay interviews that last hour. It's like they run out of content by that 4th hr. 3 hr shows have a quicker pace and don't drag on as much.

In your scenario, if KNBR did switch back to 3 hr shows, this wouldn't be a bad weekday lineup if Shasky left 95.7 for KNBR:

6AM-9AM- Murph and Markus... I don't see any changes here. Plus would be awkward if they put Shasky in this timeslot even though Shasky has proven he can work in the early morning timeslot. It also would be KNBR admitting that Shasky is better than Murph and/or Markus.

9AM-Noon- Greg Papa and Greg Silver... I don't see this show changing either, especially given Greg Papa's health status. When Greg Papa comes back, they will keep this show the same I'm sure, even if they change this to a 3 hr show with this new format.

      Noon-3 PM- Two scenario here:

Shasky solo and/or Shasky and friends?... Maybe in this scenario, Shasky could have a rotating group of co-hosts like JD, Krueger, Bonta, Damon Bruce (even though that could be controversial and Damon will probably want more of a full-time gig if he ever went back to radio but I wouldn't mind a Damon and Shasky mid-day show), or maybe bring in a guy like Allen Stiles who used to be on 95.7 but now has a full-time show on 1140 in Sacramento.

-Or the return of Bonta and Shasky if Bonta comes back to radio full-time.... I think either option is not bad here, even though yes, a return of Bonta and Shasky would be more ideal. As I mentioned earlier, Bonta and Shasky had radio magic.

3PM-6PM- Dirty Work with Copes and Derek Papa... I know Rich has sadly crapped on this show in the past, but this is a pretty good show. They're going to have Andrew Luck as a weekly guest during this football season, so I don't think this show is going anywhere as far as being taken off the air or being replaced.

But yes, this wouldn't be a bad weekday lineup for KNBR with Shasky and possibly others added and you make all of these shows 3 hr shows instead of 4 hr shows.
