Covid really hurt baseball. Attendance and viewership was already trending down, but when fans were not allowed in the parks in '20, some fans never returned. Fan attendance has been trending up the past two years, but viewership is still lower than usual. In the end, ESPN saw the writing on the wall and probably made the right decision.
@11:15 Attendance is physically being in the park. Viewership is tuning into a network broadcasting a baseball game. Millennials have no patience to watch a complete baseball game.
Giants are incredibly boring. Throw in skyrocketing prices for tickets, parking, and food, and it's a recipe where seagulls will outnumber the fans. In a division where the Dodgers/Padres/Diamondbacks will be better than the Giants for awhile, it'll be wise to save some money for 9ers tickets.
The Giants only have two guys in their starting rotation with over 100 innings pitched last year. Just writing that sentence sounds unbelievable. It could be a very ugly season for the Giants.
I suppose MLB Network will then be the only choice mostly for diehard fans at home.. Does Fox, ABC, NBC, or CBS air many games of baseball teams locally or nationally? Probably a money loser for them too. MLB created some rules to speed up the game but still people are so board at times they have to do the “wave” or the “ beach ball” and other nonsense to amuse themselves. I think at Sharks and Warriors games fans are having a good time in the stands too but I think the focus is still on the team like with the Sharks’ bite motion with your arms. Do they still do that at Sharks’ games?…I have not been in awhile but thought that was great especially for the kids.
If the Giants get off to a good start KNBR's ratings will jump. As a one time Sharks season ticket holder for 20 years, that team is at least two years away from making the playoffs much less becoming a real Stanley Cup contender; despite Celibrini and Smith.
Murph from Spring Training is my signal to turn off KNBR for the next 8 months. You have to really, really, really like baseball to have listen to him drone on about it everyday until next Fall.

ReplyDeleteIs fan attendance not part of overall viewership? Oh, I forgot those darn millennials glued to working their phones.

ReplyDeleteOne day Murphy will hear the pop. That's the noise you hear when Murphy pulls his head out of the GM's arse. It is one step further than brown nosing.
