McGowan Interview Assessment; Betty Yu; KQED Advice

  1. Rich.... here is what Betty posted almost 2 weeks ago on Facebook. I'd say she handled it very well and professionally.

    "Two life updates ✨
First, as many of you know, I’ve had health challenges since the beginning of the year. After recovering, healing, and responding to medical treatments, I’m feeling better, healthier, and stronger. I’m grateful to all the specialists on my medical team at Stanford Hospital and UCSF.
They have medically cleared me to work soon.
Second, it’s my final week at CBS πŸ₯²
After 10 unbeatable years of late night storytelling, endless laughs, and special moments, it’s time to say goodbye to my KPIX family.
My decision to leave was made with gratitude. My time here has been rewarding, eventful, and enlightening. The stories and people I’ve met along the way have shaped, informed, and inspired me during breaking and community news, entertainment, and pop culture coverage.
My coworkers have become friends for life. I will savor the memories forever!
To the viewers, photogs (especially those who took me to every possible taco spot in town πŸ˜†), and everyone inside and outside the newsroom who has supported me, thank you from the bottom of my nostalgic 🫢🏻 Here’s to the next adventure! "

  2. Why so thin-skinned, Rich? You don’t hesitate to rip everyone — justified or not. So why act like a petulant child when your viewers offer comments?

    1. Yep, either accept comments(good/bad) or ignore/turn off comments. To be so affected by comments(not the first time) shows a lack of maturity.

    2. Exactly. I've both respectfully praised and ripped Rich and yet he's only ever published my praise. Destroys credibility, IMO.

  4. As someone who doesn't like talking about work, I can relate to how Betty handled her work situation. In the end, she doesn't have to tell anyone anything and her privacy should be respected.

    1. Back to KTVU. I'm unclear about Weekends on 2. Not on upcoming tv schedules for this weekend, but still on the station's livestream schedule. https://www.ktvu.com/ktvu-live-stream-schedule
So what's up? Hiring Betty Yu and canceling the weekend morning show? It's a Jack London Headscratcher!

  5. I still don't get it. I can't understand WHY Betty Yu, left KPIX. OK, it seems to have some kind of problem with personnel. But Betty has been there for over 15 years. She ALWAYS gets the PLUMB assigments, such as attending the Academy Awards, Grammys, etc, as well as assignments covering mega-million dollar mansions that are for sale, flying in expensive luxury jets, and test driving luxury cars. ANYTIME one of those type of assignment came up, it was ALWAYS Betty Yu who got them. Clearly she was treated better than any other reporters. Yet, she leaves. And the thing is, in the past, Rich, you have mentioned that she was being courted by other major market stations, as well as networks such as CNN, etc. With all of this said, she goes to KTVU, which is not exactly known as a haven for media people who are totally enjoying coming to work everyday? So NO, I still say there is some kind of story here, because her going to problematic KTVU, just doesn't make a bit of sense at all.

  7. KQED advice: Bring back Krasny, give Mina K a different time slot, lose the Harvard yutz.
Give NOVA priority. Science & Education first and foremost. Lose the Oldies - the current version of Lawrence Welk. Play a jazz show of past, present, and future, musicians.
Find the next Ken Burns. Play movies that have an SF/Bay Area connection.
Have a good travelogue show - one we can relate to, not some old white dude tromping through exotic lands searching for beet recipes.

    1. Those are good ideas. Plus bring back Newsroom or TWINC. Try some crossover between radio and tv. You have a big brand new building. Use it wisely.
