The Saturday Schmooze; 95.7 FM --"The Game" and KNBR: Sports Radio at its Worst; Sara Donchey Still Struggles at KPIX; Liz Cook Improves But Has a Problem; Alex Bennett YouTube Show in NY Weirdly Funny (Sort of); Danny Bringer Brings It (Soundly) at KQED Radio; Susan Kennedy, Peabody Winner and Earns it

Saturday Schmooze...

People assume because I pick on 95.7 FM, "The Game", that I much prefer KNBR (680 AM, 104.5 FM)--actually, I think both statiuons are lousy.

KNBR is a certified joke. They barely exist and are only relevant thanks to carrying the 49ers, and to a lesser extent, the Giants. Without those partners, KNBR would be oatmeal radio.

Wait a second,they already are.

The Game hasn't moved the needle since its inception over a decade ago and might be phased out soon with a coporate parent on the brink of financial purgatory.

First and foremost, both The Game and KNBR don't really talk sports. Oh. they might claim they do, but because of their incompetence, hosts think they're cute and try to talk pop culture and off-sports topics. It doesn't work. It sounds artificial and it's only manufactured BS. The reason why both outlets don't take calls is because they're fearful of engaging with someone with a brain. And who could embarrass the host. Think about it for a moment.

I listen to east coast sports talk radio, WFAN in NY and WIP in Philly. They take calls, in fact, actively encourage calls. And it's a healthy, interesting and entertaining exchange. Yeah, they take sports seriously but they also mix in their talk with humor, personality and vigor. It's no bs too; the callers know their stuff and there's genuine back and forth. It's sincere, you can hear it. Of course, yes, they're passionate. Which makes it all the more entertaining and fresh.

Both The Game and KNBR are stale. There's no sincerity. It's all mush with fake NOISE and sound drops and shock talk that doesn't enlighten whatsoever. Which is why both KNBR and 95.7 have seen their market share drop precipitously. In short, the Bay Area sports fans have REJECTED these silly stations. One day, into the year, 2066, they might be willing to give 'em a second chance.

*Sara Donchey is trying her best to shake off the LA look and demeanor, I'll give her that, but she still looks uncomfortable on the PIX screen. The problem, among many, is she just doesn't have any feel, any conviction. A viewer has to be comfortable watching the anchor. It's pretty simple. Donchey, to her credit, is trying. But unfortunately, she is lacking. It's the absolute truth. Sorry, CBS-SF.

*Then there's hapless Ryan Yamamoto. Oy vey.

*It's entertaining, in a weird way: former SF radio czar, Alex Bennett, is in NY doing a YouTube show. Give a watch. It's not always pristine, unless you like a guy who talks about death a lot (in a comical way) but every now and then, Bennett hits a homerun and can be funny and engaging. His "citizen panel"--a bunch of middle-aged guys with various opinions-- is worth an hour of your time. Remember, it's an acquired taste.

*Liz Cook has greatly improved her anchor duties--I've said as much. She has a problem though: another anchor at PIX, prominent, I may add, has no favorable opinion of her. That anchor isn't alone.

*Local TV News audiences, like the national trend, are diminishing. I know why: because everyone does the same thing. There is no edge anymore. Nobody tries anything new. There is a constant look and it's tired and stale. A lot of it is fear. Fear of trying something original and fresh, creative. Do we have to have 5000 weather updates when there is no weather? Is it required there can't be a lead, Black woman anchor? Yeah, I know Pam Moore and Ama Daetz, but they're rare.

*The sound of KQED Radio is always interesting. Literally. I've always marvaled at the awesome actualities on the local NPR station and there's a reason: veteran station engineer, Danny Bringer, is the absolute TOPS and it shows. Too bad we don't have more of this kind of pro at, say, KCBS, or KGO.

*I forgot to mention Susan Kennedy, the current KCBS weekend anchor, won a prestigious Peabody award while anchoring KGO.

*The vast wasteland: KGO on the weekend.

*Hidden gem department: KCSM, a real, local treasure if you love jazz, like I do --and even if you dont't.

*Ted Robinson and John McEnroe in Palm Springs--now that's a look!

  1. Now do the talking head sports shows on TV boring people about what they just watched, live.

  2. I've said it before Rich, that the Sara Donkey at KPIX is just painful to look at. Her whole face is just too fake to look at. I keep wondering when it is going to crack and fall off. That being said, the other day I was briefly trying to watch a little of the 3pm afternoon newscast, and I did see a glimpse of her standing there and I saw her nice high heel shoes. So I will give her that much, her feet look good in high heels....

  3. I had no idea Ama Daetz was black. Couldn't care less, by the way, but had no idea.

    1. her mother is black. Father a white former science teacher at Saratoga High School. Kool guy.

    2. C'mon Anonymous@1213pm; how could you NOT know Daetz is black? It is literally and figuratively written all over her face and the stuff on top of her head that is supposed to pass as hair.

    3. Why are you making fun of her hair texture which is beautiful? She is biracial. Racist much?

    4. I thought maybe she was a Senorita. I does not matter.
She seems serious about doing the job.

  4. How long has Yamamoto worked at KPIX? He is still having trouble identifying the station's field reporters, on-air. And they should consider having Ryan stand on a box, during the side-by-side stand-up shots.

    1. It's like watching cartoons.
      The Donkey & Yamamoto show.

KPIX finest in the voice department & fake hair dept.

      Mickey mouse on the left.
Cinderella / Witch on the right.

      Perfect !

  5. Liz Cook and Ryan Yamamoto should not do promos and such standing side by side.
Not his fault, but with Liz Cook towering over him, it distracts from his gravitas. Especially if she is wearing heels and a long flowing dress.

    1. The same is true, when he stands next to Donchey.

  6. Whenever I listen to KNBR, I feel like I'm in an alternate universe where people like baseball. If you listen to the national shows, they ignore baseball out of fear of losing the audience. KNBR's main function seems to be trying to manufacture interest in the Giants.

    1. Baseball still gets very good ratings in local markets. KNBR is evidence of that. National shows have learned that unlike the NFL or NBA, Baseball fans only care about their home teams...which is why Baseball is not discussed.

  7. I don't like Sara, something is wrong with her eyes not focusing on the camera or looks uncomfy. She is trying to use her sexy image to attract viewers. Atleast Liz doesn't do such a thing on camera and we get good news reporting.

  8. Given your adjacent copy, shouldn't the Donchey and Cook headshot positions be switched?

While it's clear Ryan has skill and seasoning as a reporter, as a main anchor, Yamamoto is Yama-nogo.

And, sadly, though she is not without talent, nobody seems to be singing "Donchey wish your anchor was hot like her".

(Those puns were awful, so I'll just see myself out.)

  10. its not sports -copes tkb all that -it seems its a 'program structure, not a free form ''sports talk''. always some hoo- haa interference and ambivalence.ha.

  11. You can also listen to a podcast version of Alex Bennett's show. He does regular 20 conversations with local (or former local) Bay Area comics. Frequently, they reminisce about the old days at KQAK and Live 105. It can be a very fun listen.

  12. Sports fans want to hear compelling talk about the local teams, not pop culture BS, beer rankings, and regurgitating tire pumping.

It's why podcasts continue to make sports talk radio irrelevant. And live podcasts will actually interact with their audience.

  13. You people in the Bay Area need to stop looking down your nose at anybody who is not from the Bay Area. Give Sara D. a chance to fit in.
How would you feel when everything you do or don't do is being called phony or 'Too LA'? Some of ya'll sound very stuffy and set in your ways. Anything new or different makes you angry, maybe even jealous. Lighten up, people. Give Ms. D a year or two to find herself. She is skilled and ambitious. You will learn to like her.

  14. Yes...
You get 1000 weather update per hour.
    Why???
Because the sponsor paid for 500 updates, but we are tossing in another 500 because we need the cash.

  15. Ryan might want to try the heels and flowing dress...
    Just a thought.

  16. I have recently being able to listen to KNBR for a few day...first time ever doing that, and have to agree with Rich that when it comes to talking sports it is pretty weak. No matter the time, it seems the hosts talk more about a non-sports item than anything else. The guests are always writers from other outlets, and there is never any listener input. I would be okay with no callers if the hosts had some juice and something relevant to say. All the hosts do is gush over their writer 'friends'. The station provides no original insight or coverage on anything.

  17. KCBS website still shows Stan Bunger weekdays starting a 5:30AM.

  18. I think others dislike Liz Cook because she is by far and away the hottest looking anchor in the Bay Area

  19. The sad thing is that KNBR used to be good, back in the days of Pete Franklin, Ralph Barbieri, and Gary Radnich. Not anymore . . . now it's lame song parodies, endless Yookla references, beer, and betting.

    1. It was a better station when Frank Dill, Mike Cleary, Carter B. Smith were on the air.

  20. I agree. I was thinking the same as I turned off KNBR the other day. Was so much better when it was Dallas week and Pete Franklin would talk to Cowboys stations and fans. The first time Scott Ferrell came in when Franklin was on vacation. The shock was palpable. Everything now is pre-teen fart jokes, politically correct mentions and commercials.
