I didn't agree with much of Eason's politics but it didn't matter. He was a brilliant talk-show host. He was engaging, funny, poignant, and a really fine interviewer. Eason had that rare ability to interact with callers and not have to showboat or go nuts. He was civilized and engaging. He could talk about anything, from politics to pop culture, from sports to down-homw southern cooking. He was that rare bird whose personality fit the performer dead on. Eason ruled KGO in the 70's from 1-4 PM. His signature theme song, to open the show, was Dave Brubeck's 'Take 5'." Eason still uses it in many of his business affairs.
One of these days, I'm going to insist to Eason to tell some of his great, vintage KGO stories right here and for all you to enjoy. There's quite a bit.
If you're doing an occasional on KSCO, he'd be a great guest too. Would love to hear his stories.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Negin. I really miss hearing Jim. He would read play announcements sometimes, and I would mail in fake ones, and he would read them.
DeleteI would love to hear you interview him, Rich.
I would also love to hear him talk about how he got the "Steven King killed John Lennon" nut to "reveal his evidence" and then told him off.
DeleteAlso, don't forget "drip"
"Do what ya can, but behave yaself."
ReplyDeleteprimo radio talent...it didn't matter what his politics were...he had the gene
ReplyDeleteOn that, we are in agreement.
DeleteChristine, Jim would regularly read newspaper articles **verbatim** on the air. Every single show. Very annoying and boring. Nothing makes for worse radio than reading off of the dang newspaper. His caller interaction consisted mainly of letting the caller speak and then saying, "Thanks for calling the program." He could have been a great radio host like Savage if he wasn't so lazy and actually did his homework and prep.
DeleteCan't trust any host that leaves SF and continues to do his KGO show remotely from NC or wherever the hell he ran off too. What an embarrasment. I'll stick with the opinionated Savage thank you very much. A much more talented orator.
Loved his squirrel reports from No. Carolina or when a thunderstorm would come in.
ReplyDeleteAlso loved his "conversations" with "Red Roger"
One of THEE best evah'.
I swear I've seen him in the Roseville/Lincoln area but if it wasn't him, I don't think a
greeting of "helloooo anybody" would go over well
As a conservative coming into my own politically in the mid 90's I listen to him on KSFO I want to say he was on 12-3 before Savage another great talker!

Miss Jim on the Airwaves...
ReplyDeleteI guess. Him reading copy about awful liberals the first 30 minutes got a bit old. But, I'm glad he and his ilk are enjoying their social security and medicare during their "golden " years. The programs they condemned.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Savage so Jim's politics were fine with me. But reading articles on the air is not compelling radio. An insult to the radio listener. We do not need you to read damn articles for us for 30 minutes Jim.... Jim was probably a RINO who supported Jeb over Trump.
DeleteJim was on during the Golden Age of Bay Area talk shows. I think Jim might have been on KNEW before he went to KGO.
ReplyDeleteKGO radio was king of the hill back then.
Wonder why Jim came back to very Blue California after retiring to his home state of Confederate Red North Carolina.
Right on the money on Eason. He was cool, funny and could catty a conversation with anybody- a hot shot author, big time politicians and the man in the street. Where are the Easons coming from today? He is an original.
ReplyDeleteI hope you can get him on your blog or in a podcast
KOB
There probably aren't a lot of 'these days' left for Jim. So, maybe sooner than later, Rich?
