The Start of Dead Week; Circle7 Sunday News Show Really Just Weather Reports; Rothmann KGO Radio Trump Infatuation; Katsuyama Fluff on KTVU; Ditto Paulson and Clark; Howard Stern in Town; Greg Papa's KC Ripoff; Sunday Schmooze

DEAD WEEK personified...combined with a forecast of rainy days for most of Christmas week. Your regular anchors will be gone and the fill-in brigage will dominate the local TV News screen. I know you're just heart-broken.

*Glanced at KGO-TV News this Sunday morning and I didn't see any news unless you count a gazillion weather reports and Christmas-themed sweet nothings. But I guess when you're building a better Bay Area, you have to insert as much FLUFF as you can.

*Speaking of fluff, there's KTVU's Jana Katsuyama who is so vanilla and boring she's the human C-Span channel at Fox2. Dear lord, hit the mute button. Katsuyama makes Tom Vacar look like Adam Sandler.

*We interupt this blog so we can bring you a weather report from Circle7.

*Listen to the ads on KGO Radio and you'll hear for yourself why KGO is dying. There very little local spots and a whole lot of PSAs and national remnants advertising. The password is "coffin."

*Again, John Rothmann is a good politics guy but he is NOT a drivetime broadcaster. Rothmann opened his Friday show with a full hour on President Joe Biden's speech on voting rights. On Thursday it was abortion

and yes, another Donald Trump orgy. Rothmann is INFATUATED by Trump and loves to engage (fake, I may add) with pro-Trump callers. It's NOT good radio and it most certainly is NOT good drive-time radio. Rothmann is in the WRONG time slot but I guess when you have NO MONEY, you have to settle for dreck, right Lee Hammer? CorrectoMundo.

*KCSM is worth a listen if you love great jazz and a way to beat the rainy days ahead. Sonny Buxton on Saturday morning is fabulous LOCAL radio.

*I have tried to watch KPIX's staple of reporters but every other day, (it seems) there's a newbie and they don't look or sound local. Bakersfield and Fresno. And a smidgen of Sacramento but Bay Area? No.

*Steve Paulson and Dave Clark: more evidence as to why KTVU is LOSING all its luster. I once thought highly of Paulson until he began to indulge in selfies and EGOitus; Clark? Blowhard LA guy who still has a picture of himself and OJ Simpson on his desk. Good way to preach harmony, Dave. On the other hand, yeah, it's a cut-throat business.

*Howard Stern is in town and staying at the Fairmont if some of 'yous wants to baba booey.

*More than OVER THE TOP, Greg Papa's TD call is a blatant RIP-OFF of the KC Chiefs pbp-broadcaster's "Touchdownnnnn, KAN SAS City!" Give a listen.

*It's the holidays yeah and I'll be blogging. No days off. And should you want to DONATE to the 415 Media Blog, then please, yes click to the right and be merry.

  1. We get it Rich, John is not drive time material, however if you like John as I do, you will listen anytime he is on, and I suspect so will most of his fans. As for Trump news, John talked about Trump's comments on Jews in America, I think even though Trump is no longer president his comments were controversial enough to have a discussion about them. John also pointed out that other president's including Truman, Nixon and Carter also made or wrote disparing commnts about Jews. So that hour was a little more balanced than you are implying in your comment.

Hey Jana, Dynasty Restaurant in Rohnert Park called. You’re late for your shift.

    1. You must be a regular at that restaurant. Maybe you can get the bartender to turn up the volume on the tv when Jana comes on. She is as solid as they come with her reporting.

Real journalism costs money. Easier to pretend and invent catchy slogans.

  4. How can you not talk about Donnie during the pendency of the Jan6 insurrection investigation?

    1. No one's been charged with an "insurrection" but you go girl.

    2. You must have missed all the long prison terms coming down for insurrectionists. When you violently disrupt a constitutionally mandated congressional process of certifying presidential electors, storming the capitol, causing injuries and deaths, that's pretty much the perfect definition of an insurrection in action. Perhaps you've never bothered to read the constitution, but pretend to be a patriot because you wear flag print underwear?

    3. Christine, You are of course right. However, you have probably figured out by now that Trump supporters have their own reality, which rarely include being critical of Trump.

One another point, I have heard several complaints that some of the rioters from Jan. 6 are getting too light a sentence. I believe several hosts on KGO have made that point.

    4. Too light of a sentence? Hmmm. I was and still am very disgusted with what those people did but what about all the rioters and looters from last summer? The same people that our now VP advocated raising bail money for. I don't recall many of those people being sentenced to anything, let alone charged...oh, but that's right, they were stealing and burning car dealerships down to just feed their families, as per Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I just wish for once, both parties could apply equal standards. Just once!

    5. One was a civil rights protest in which a few bad apples decided to use it as an opportunity to be destructive. The other was a direct attack on our Capitol building by American citizens who were trying to subvert our democracy and stop the Constitutional process of counting the electoral votes and certifying a presidential election. You really can't compare the two.

    6. do not compare what happened during the blm protests to a failed coup

  5. Stern left his basement to come to SF??? I find that hard to believe, he's barely left Long Island in two years due to COVID...

    1. I never thought that Howard Stern ever wanted to leave New York, even before the nation's most popular germaphobe had to seclude even further during the pandemic. Wow, and he chose San Francisco. Amazing.

    2. He spends most of his time in Palm Beach FL now and has a daughter out here. Him leaving his self-imposed prison is part of his mission to repair the damaged he caused for 30 years. He's part of the Hollywood club now. It is all he ever wanted and will do whatever it takes to hold on to it.

Anything on Alisa Clancy who did Morning Cup of Jazz on KCSM for 30 years is now doing the overnight anchor shift on KCBS news now. She's good - just wish she could play some Ben Webster saxophone like Ray Tagliferro used to do on KGO late night radio. There's a story behind Alisa leaving KCSM.

    1. Don't say "there's a story" unless you're willing to spill the beans.

    2. There's a story behind everything in Bay Area radio, just ask Rich. Take a look at Andrew Gilbert's article in the June 28, 2021 CVSF. Do you know who Andrew is? I'm surprised Rich didn't pick it up since he's a KCSM fan. Sounds like the split wasn't amicable and she was treated poorly after 35 years of brilliance. Alisa's Desert Island interviews on Fridays were gold.

    3. Go to Utube and type in Ben Webster, there's plenty of his recordings, some live. He played live at a Jazz Club in Copenhagen (Montmatre) a club I visited several times when I still lived in my native Denmark. Never saw Ben Webster, but Dexter Gordon several times along with my fellow Dane Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, an incredible bassist.

what the heck are they doing in the 7-10 period? now it's jim bohannan and he had a guest trumpist talker tonight...
always liked jim...but this is getting weird

    1. jim bo hannnan as some people think is his name, has always been extremely conservative going back years and years ago when he filled in for larry king when king did five hours of radio...and that was in the 80's so im thinking he's got to be close to 80 years old himself now..

Lost what little respect I still had for Rothmann with these silly ads. And Rich, you are right. John's "outrage" with callers with a contrary opinion is totally fugasi.

  12. Dave Clark drives me insane. It is beyond time for him to go. Some of his comments are so cringey and inappropriate. You can tell that the other anchors just quickly move on from them.

I still really like Paulson (selfies don't bother me). He really knows what he is talking about, and you can tell he is a weather geek. I respect that.
