Somerville and Goodrich at PIX: Dream a Little

IT WOULD BE A DYNAMITE DUO: KPIX DEBUTS FRANK SOMERVILLE and JULIETTE GOODRICH

Somerville is essentially DONE at KTVU; even if he returns, he's OUT come next March when his contract is up; he's a Bay Area transplant and he wants to stay here, especailly since he's nearing his mid 60's. Even as he's had off-camera issues, he's still solid and has a generally good demeanor. More importantly, he can read a teleprompter.

Goodrich is a STAR and has been wasted as a weekend anchor at PIX; she is smart too. A proven winner and she and Somerville would not only MOVE THE NEEDLE, they would significantly raise the overall scheme at PIX and provide instantaneous BUZZ, something CBS-SF DESPERATELY NEEDS. PIX is a non-factor station right now. It is useless in the morning and downright less-than-mediocre at night and at 11. It is a fading star. It needs a JOLT! It has a chance to become relevant and a FORCE in the Bay Area. A Somerville-Goodrich tandem would be damn near genius.

As awesome a nove this would be it would require equal creativity on the part of the suits at CBS to MAKE IT HAPPEN. That's where the "can't" factor comes in. Because this would require some ingenuity on the part of management, I'm skeptical about its conception because someone witth a lot of stones would have to make this happen and that's probably not in the cards. On the other hand, I do believe in miracles.

  1. Sommerville just needs to go away. Period. He's not Bay Area anchor material. Maybe there's a position for him in a market like Bakersfield. But even they have their standards, in my opinion.

  2. Frank would be boinking Juliette within two weeks. Lucky duck.

    1. Wrong. Frank only goes for girls 30-35 years younger than him.

    2. So you're saying that Frank banged Julie Haener???

  3. KPIX wastes Brian Hackney, can't expect them to seize the Somerville opportunity.

    1. Having worked at all the Bay Area news outlets, I can tell you the managers are very intimidated by intelligence and competence, which explains the people they hire. And explains why Hackney festers on weekends. He could do all their jobs, and they know it, so they have to keep him marginalized.

  4. KPIX needs to do anything/something to come back to any relevancy in the news market. Right now I just switch by the station on my way to another station. Somerville to KPIX would at least make me check out the station to see who they would team Frank with. Goodrich would be a good fit. It would also give Frank the fresh start he needs as he enters the last few years of a decent career and a good contract with rules to follow. He cleans up his reputation, regains some local cred and shows the world there is always a second chance possibility if you want to do better. Both Somerville and KPIX need this. Bay Area needs a new news energy and this could be it.

    1. Sommerville at KPIX would mean I couldn't watch their news any longer. He's why I don't watch KTVU now. I agree they should let him go. He's been around too long. The Bakersfield suggestion sounds good, if they'd have him. Alex is right for the job.

    2. Agree with 12:05. I only watch KTVU when Frank is not on. Enjoy Alex. He is doing a fine job.

    3. Bring back VDLC and you'd have Frank and Veronica at 11PM. the ultimate train wreck

  5. Frank and Juliette can anchor the news, with Entertainment reporter Henry Tannenbaum singing “Slap the Ham”.

  6. Are you NUTS???

I've known both of them over the years. They'd mix like oil and water.

Hackney is the perfect partner for Juliette, whether you can see it or not. And they genuinely like each other too. Not a lot of love out there for Frank, and honestly there wasn't even before his bout of wacko behavior.

  7. Juliette Goodrich is the entire package like Vicki Liviakis.
Partnering her with a troubled lush? Not a good look and she would balk in a heartbeat.

Hackney is self absorbed SOB, But I can see this as a probable pairing.

    1. For all I know, Hackney and Goodrich both want to work only weekend evenings and neither would be interested in a larger role. I do think they make a good team and are vastly preferable to anyone else at KPIX (together or apart).

    2. I agree, 3:50. Hackney and Goodrich do work well together, and in their other on-air roles.

  8. It's a nice dream but won't happen. CBS is trying to recover from the Peter Dunn-David Friend era. Because of that, they won't hire a guy like Frank given his history with the interns at KTVU. Frank's other two strikes are the drunk broadcast and the incident with Amber. Whether that was a set-up or not, he was put on indefinite suspension. It's hard to imagine CBS or any other corporation taking a chance of Frank. If Frank is in need of bucks, he might try to become a social justice activist, provided he doesn't sign a non-disparagement deal with Fox.

  9. Rich, if Frank has "issues ", why would moving him to another station work? We take our bad habits with us. He needs to go away for a time and clean himself up first, and then return if he wants. I said it last week and I'll say it again, George wattson 2.0.

  10. Why drag Goodrich into the mud by throwing Somerville in there to contaminate everything?

  11. I don't claim to know Frank well but I am acquainted with him through social circles. The handful of times that I've interacted with him and have seen him interact with other he came off as incredibly standoffish with a holier than thou and self-righteous attitude. Perhaps he is very likable in the workplace, but if he's anything like what I've seen of him socially then I see no scenario where Juliette would put up with that. Oil and water.

    1. So Juliette wouldn’t put up with Frank but Julie Haener does?

    2. I've gotten tired of Somerville, but I sat near him at a Cal-USC football game a few years ago and he came off as very personable and happy to talk to anyone who wanted to talk to him.

  12. And Frank has money issues? It is reported online that Frank makes over $200,000 *more* than the President of the United States.

  13. Goodrich likes her hours as they are. Doesn't mind filling in when Cook needs a break. Won't put up with shenanigans. Hence, RL's dream pair is really a nightmare if it were to happen.

  15. No one in this market will touch Sommerville once he leaves KTVU.

Goodrich likes the weekends. She doesn't need weekdays, else she'd already be there.

I don't understand Rich's ongoing vendetta - KPIX is actually (relatively) the most palatable local news, precisely because they're low-key. KGO, too Disney, and with that awful slogan. KNTV can still only pretend to be a San Francisco station (and I remember KRON in affiliate and Art Brown days). KTVU, too much Fox news pollution now. Present KRON, with the likes of Heenan and Liviakis, I'd now put 2nd behind KPIX. Sports & weather don't count. Goodrich and Hackney are the best duo of the whole bunch.

Dion Lim would be the stellar move by KTVU, but I don't think she could stomach the Fox element. KPIX should snap her up... a win-win.

    1. Snagging Dion Lim would be phenomenal but I don’t think The Firm would let her do unlimited reports on violence against Orientals the way aBC7 does

    2. I agree with this. I cannot stand the BBA schtick. And KNTV seems like the farm club. Ken Bastida comes across as authoritative but cheerful, a local Bill Kurtis

    3. Asians. Orientals is a very racist term.

      Delete
    4. Orientals. Asians is a blanket term for many countries.

      Gotta differentiate.

      Delete
    5. Oriental is the more geographically appropriate term if you are referring to someone from the Orient region. ‘Asian’ just lumps everyone from Asia together. As far as it being racist … yeah, yeah, yeah. Before you know it ‘Black’ and ‘Asian’ will be racist and inappropriate. Wake me when silly political correctness and lefty talking points no longer rule the day.

    2. No. He works in the weather dept at KPIX. Photography is his hobby

    3. BP works at KPIX as a producer. But he is a great photog on the side.

  17. Frank Somerville can't talk anymore. He sounds like Foster Brooks doing his drunk act. It's been that way for months now. The fact he improved somewhat then reverted to stumbling and slurred speech show an ongoing problem. He should have been put on paid leave a long time ago, and any lapses (he's had several) should have resulted in KTVU buying him out and keeping him off the air. He has little future unless he can show he's stable. Which looks doubtful, because he has an outsized ego as shown by his demand (his editorial might have been delivered with slurring and other errors).

  18. While RL has longed for Juliette to take a weekday gig (with reason), isn't she still driven by Mom concerns Mon-Fri?

  19. Why does anyone care what these tele prompter readers say?
I haven't sat for a local news show for ever.
    Traffic? Smart Phone
    Sports? See above
weather? not to be redundant but see above...
Headlines? Ok I've become redundant...see above
There isn't a so called anchor person in the Bay Area worth watching flat out

  20. KPIX weekends would be perfect without goofy Daren Peck. PLEASE!! Dump him!!

  21. Come on... .there is a reason she languishes on weekends. A pretty (?) face don't mean squat.

Time to realize that The Bay Area is AMATUREVILLE when it come to news "programs". No one has any chops.
