Love 1:02's comment. Can't stand how quickly Paul Desmond left us (great as he was with his instrument, unfortunately, his chain smoking matched that and then some by the end in 1977). Yes, Take Five never gets old. Not just in America, but as you can see via the credits, in France. Parisians still treasure that song, like Northern California treasured Dave Brubeck.
Forgot to add in my last comment, when Al "Jazzbeaux" Collins had his short lived show on KTSF 26 in 1979, he would have them play that song now and then.
Rich you may already know this, but May 4th is informally known as Dave Brubeck day because "Take Five" was written (by Paul Desmond, Brubeck's sax player) in 5/4 time, which was considered unusual at the time. You can file that away and always post this on that date (5/4). PS Just got all of this off Wiki.
Truly a classic. Said to have inspired the Paul Butterfield Band's "East - West".
ReplyDeleteAnother great selection from DJ Rich!
ReplyDeleteRoyalties to Take Five go to the American Red Cross. Paul Desmond, the composer, had that in his Will. Totaling over $4 million so far.

ReplyDelete"Take Five" inspired Frank Sommerville to take up the jazz flute.
