Aaron Pero, the combative, angry, and, some say, overly-intimidating ND at KRON was suspended by KRON Mgt. Namely, say sources to me, Jim Rose, the recently-hired VP and GM, in his first major apparent move since coming to the Bay Area in May.
A KRON contact told me the reason for the suspension may have been corporate (Nextstar, KRON's owner) was unaware of "a relationship with one of its SF management person and a staffer at KRON." Pero has had an on-going relationship with morning anchor, Darya Folsom.
The source indicated that Nextstar wil look into the matter "more specifically."
Pero has run the news dept. at KRON for over 15 years with a iron-fist and is known to be combative and unruly at times. In recent years, he supposedly toned down his act and has tried to be more conciliatory toward staff. That tactic might have intensified with the apointment of a new boss at KRON, more importantly, his boss, Rose.
The source told me, emphatically, "they don't want this out." No wonder everybody at Nextstar and KRON were tight-lipped over a request for comment. Why am I not surprised.

LOL, 9:01. Pero clearly too combative to show the dysfunctional smile that most new weather anchors have shown toward Diva Darya. Pero had 15 years of William Hung moments; it will have to suffice. Can't be secretive, Jim Rosen; you're making the right move. Can't let contract liability concerns or the station lawyers interfere; there are mountains of evidence for cause.

ReplyDeleteI remember back when Little Aaron Pero was just a lad. I believe he started as an intern, then became a writer, at KXTV in Sacramento. We worked side-by-side. I used to think he was just a goofy kid, but he DID have an acerbic, derisive side that would pop out occasionally. But he would always accompany it with a goofy smile. Now here we are--almost 30 years later. Turns out he was a super-vile creature after all.

ReplyDeleteI have. I worked with him at two different stations. He's gotten progressively meaner and more repellant since our first station. Fortunately, I left KRON after the Young deal, so I wasn't there for the worst of it. But he was pretty much a dick by the early aughts.

Watched him tell a producer their idea was stupid in front of the newsroom, then two weeks later told everybody about a new feature we all had to assist with that was exactly that idea, with no apologies or credit to the producer. Watched him tell a traffic person to "stop being a whiney pussy" about having over half the live exterior cameras being broken, then at the wrap-up meeting the SAME day, yelled at them to stop using the same cameras over and over again. And say countless incidents of favoritism to Darya despite bad behavior, and even aggressively negative feedback from viewers about her AND her being completely out of line and wrong about almost everything. For a lot of very smart, talented news people, the KRON newsroom under Pero was the last straw that sent them into other industries. In an industry that respects a gruff, tough-but-fair boss who pushes you but gets results, Pero is an angry little bully who never should have been put in charge of anything, and with any luck the only thing he'll ever run again is in a future career as the Angriest Tilt-A-Whirl operator in some traveling carnival.

DeleteI first knew him when he was a barely-competent noon producer back in the mid-90s. He got higher on the food chain by kissing suited asses and acting like he knew what he was doing when he was clueless. His strategy was blame some other person (always an underling of course) and act tough and be loud. In a shithole business like post-NBC KRON it worked. If KRON had stayed a real station he'd still be a minor producer if he were even there. More likely he'd be delivering your order for Uber Eats.

DeleteYou're thinking of KGO, I think, but they're all mismanaged. KNTV in San Jose is the best, because it's full of old KGO employees from the days when KGO was a nice place to work. The rest are clusterfucks.
3:35, more like take the elevator to the 2nd floor. KRON is in the same building as KGO. Maybe cross the street from KPIX. But you are right! They are all mismanaged. KNTV is the best. I'm surprised NBC just doesn't drop the $$$$ and move them to SF. Working from home is starting to hit SF rent and probably down the line the cost of real estate. Take advantage now until working from home becomes tiresome which will happen and people will want to return to an actual building. Then prices will come back up again.

ReplyDeleteI must say, all of the criticism and accusations aimed at Pero are right on the mark and very well deserved, not only was he all of the above, a stone cold liar and racist, who also treated older employees with disrespect, he also had help in the form of certain employees and fellow management to help him with his dirty work throughout the years. I hope doesn't get away with just a "slap on the hand" suspension, please let the karma gods give him what he deserves.

So does this mean Darya will be gone too? Can't blame her for having been beat with an ugly stick if she seemed like a nice and competent person, but instead she comes off like the epitome of "ugly is as ugly does". Hope to be able to watch KRON in the mornings again soon!

ReplyDeleteI was there in the meeting where Pero heard Stanley Roberts had his stroke. No concern, no reaction, other than "How long do they think he'll be out?" If someone had told him there was gum on his shoe I think he would have had more concern.

One big reason I departed KRON. The toxic style and deceit I couldn’t stomach. They lost a dedicated Award-winning photographer/editor because of this underhanded despicable low-life duo and then some. I know how horrible and racist and hateful they are. They both need to be taken out like the trash they are.
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying all of this thoroughly. Pero and Gin tried to scare this Hunter's Point homegirl after I singled handedly launched KRON ON in Dec 2018 and demanded more than 30.00 an hour. I dragged them both around that newsroom until they both retaliated and gave me a bad review at 3 months probation end. They couldn't handle a fighter so they falsified the review. I launched the Nation's first 24/7 news livestreamed broadcast. The statute of limitations is not up yet. They both deserve to be dragged a bit more. Taking all recommendations for an attorney. Scumbags.

I am referring to the words "dick, asshole, and pussy", all of which to me, are pretty darn good things! I love my dick, as it has given me a lifetime of pleasure.
