The 10 o'clock News --KTVU's storied franchise and an industry-respected and admired station staple--is well on its way to being something you'll never see again, something you'll hardly recognize if Fox has its way, I'VE LEARNED.
**
I would remind you all I'm saddened by this even if it's not a reality until the end of the year--I've always admired the 10 PM KTVU signature news platform.
Fox-owned KTVU simply is ready to go all out on high-priced news talent, from anchors to reporters, whatever and that includes KTVU, its most-profitable O and O, its Bay Area prized station.
While KTVU still makes globs of money, both for itself and its owner, Fox wants a much more leaner operation that is at least a quarter less, perhaps half as costly as it is now and salary compensation is at the top of its hit list and the entirety of the 10 o'clock News budget
All four anchors at 10 make at least $300K a-year, including Frank Somerville, news anchor and veteran at the top who makes $615K--Somerville's contract is up in March, 2021. So too, sports anchor/director Mark Ibanez' deal goes to March of next year; Ibanez earns $330K and would like one more contract extension, sources tell me. Both Julie Haener and weather anchor Bill Martin are close to contract-ending status and all but gone from KTVU's/Fox landscape, I've discovered.
Fox, internally, has already begun discussions within its management alignment on O and O (owned and operated) stations, KTVU right now, as to what a leaner, less frills news operation would look like. It would involve more network-kind news gathering and visual display. Fox already has popular play of its primetime TV show schedule highlighted in KTVU and other O and O stations. If you watch the 10 PM news (and other KTVU news programs) you see for yourself the number of shows that are highlighted --it's nothing new, but it most certainly stands out on a Fox-owned outlet like KTVU.
If you like the consistency of a 10 PM News show like KTVU has run for several decades then you should watch KTVU now because very soon before you know it, you'll see a vastly different program in the coming year and an eventual entirely differently-looking program too. That much is certain.
I was just looking at some real estate listings, and noticed that former KTVU anchor Diane "Lady Di" Dwyer is now working as a realtor.
ReplyDeleteAnd former anchor from KTVU, KGO and a short time on KPIX, Marcia Brandwynne, is now a LMFT (therapist).
ReplyDeleteKPIX should make anchor changes getting rid of VDLC off. She should take her personal problems by hiding somewhere when a reporter is suppose to exposure their anchoring talents on air, she fail to do so.
ReplyDeleteOne more thing, should Kenny Choi leave KPIX? So sad seeing him on the streets demoted by an evil sneaky witch.
I think Kenny request the transfer to the field. If you could escape Michelle to stand in the Tenderloin at 11pm you are much better off.
DeleteRigo Chacon (ex KGO-7) is also a realtor as well.
ReplyDeleteIf KTVU cuts back on local (East Bay) coverage, then it will be buy buy for me.
I like KTVU news and find it's conveniently on, almost all the time.
ReplyDelete4am-10am
12pm-1pm
4pm-8:30pm
10pm-1230am
I realize the evening has repeat showings and the content is often repeated.
I also like the 10pm news being shown on Channel 11 Reno, NV.
As with business, layoffs or retirements can occur. I'll miss some folks for awhile and if I don't like the replacements, I'll move on.
Hey Rich: When is KTVU morning anchors coming back to the studio, distant working? It is so ridiculous to see Gasia and others stare sideways and report tho the sound isn't as bad as it was initially, doesn't feel professional...
ReplyDeleteI sure wish they would show Sommerville the door before next March.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, the poor fellow looks like he's either constipated or sitting on a corn cob.
DeleteNo corn cob thats his future sticking it in him..
DeleteNo more expensive news sets since we just broadcastfrom our "News Bureau(s)" located throughout the bay area. We could have a new promotion called 'Lets Wake The Reporter" and she can get dressed, and pick out clothes (all sponsored)...this social distancing stuff can be a great cost-cutter.
ReplyDeleteOne problem,
How will the nosy HR lady at 2JLS get her evil spycams into the staff homes?.
Ibanez makes all that scrilla but he can’t tip a Bartender. Prick.
ReplyDelete> If you like the consistency of a 10 PM News

No, you should get a time machine and go back to the early 2000s, the last time KTVU had *some* integrity.
I smell a rat in the form of Matt Laurer getting that nightly main anchor gig at FOX. How much you wanna bet those a-holes at FOX wave a fat 7 figure salary at him?
ReplyDeleteIf he shows up on KTVU i will jump ship and never watch it again! No matter how much H.H. throws herself at him.
