KGO Radio Banked on 2020 as Election Year Gold But a Coronavirus Spoiled the Fun; Tuesday Open

Interview with Dr Peter Admirand | DCU

TUESDAY OPEN

KGO RADIO was primed for mass recognition this year, 2020, an election year. News-talk radio gets its read meat from elections and more importantly, it collects mucho money; advertising revenue up the ying-yang. Then along comes an inconvenient truth, like a pandemic.

KGO overall ratings took an inexplicable dip in April but key advertiser breakdowns; women 25-54; professional women; men, a little older, but still vital; anyway, the key numbers were STRONG! If you break down (and you guys don't get those numbers) KGO had a terrific May andcan only get better as the election nears, in whatever form that is.

*BIG KGO winners:

John Rothmann (6-9 PM); Pat Thurston (Noon-3 PM); Chip Franklin (3-6 PM)

Notes: Franklin's non-stop Coronavirus talk and interviews scored huge from 3-6PM with a radio template of news, commentary, and interviews; Rothmann KILLED in the evening as did Thurston from 12-3PM; Mark Thompson continued to struggle from 10-Noon and the new Nikki Medoro is having early trouble finding footing in the morning drive.

  1. How did you get hourly numbers,Rich? Those are proprietary..I'll bet I know how. Tell us what they were..The overalls were horrid, unfortunately.

  2. If the Numbers were GOOD in any Daypart, Then the overall numbers should have gone up, at least a bit, but they dropped. .03 to a 1.5. A rising Tide lifts all boats is the theory. I think KGO was just flat for the last three months. So lets see if the election is gonna help them.

    1. Love Pat and John. Like Chip now that he is solo. Mark is too silly. Barely listen to. Medora wouldn't listen to her if she was the only show on the rasio. Glad she is not with Chip. He is tolerable. But her, no f ing way. Whinny, screeching loud no nothing.

  3. When overall listening in the market is off by about 50% compared to pre-virus months, using share is irrelevant, invalid and useless.

The station is well below the levels it was at in late 2019.

And May has not been released, anyway. Only the first two weeks, and that data is for subscribers only.

  4. I've noticed on the 5pm KPIX NEWS, no longer do they mention, Veronica is Off tonight.

  5. KCBS is so incredibly bad anymore they were crazy to bank on anything. Clowns like Marc Sandalow, Da Mayor, and Doug Sovern are just awful, biased hacks -- although his Willieness commands respect because he truly knows how the system works. Then it brings in dopes like Severin Borenstein from Cal who repeatedly justified the $120 bbl price for oil a few years ago -- when anybody with a brain in their head knew it was being run up by the oil companies and Wall Street. Pains me to say it, because I love news radio, but KCBS stinks.
