The Old, Old, KGO Radio You Loved (and Still Do)

RICH LIEBERMAN 415 MEDIA: The Old KGO Radio, Circa 1995

It was old and golden, those names, those characters. They were family, as Mickey Luckoff used to say before he became angry and arrogant.

KGO Radio. Names and places. From 277 Golden Gate to the Embarcadero, 900 Front, 55 Hawthorne and Broadway and Battery now.

I'll say this about Luckoff: he didn't take Ronn Owen's bullshit; in the end, Lowenstein -Owens beat him in arbitration, but still, Mickey could care less about Ronnnn's inflated, maniacal ego.

PROPS to Jim Eason too for telling it like it is/was regarding Ronn. It says a lot about Jim. It's especially poignant this day and age.

  1. Do you have any idea as to what Rosie Allen is doing these days? I miss her voice.

    2. Didn't Rosie once co-host an afternoon sex type talk show?

  2. Always great to see that picture. We've lost too many sadly. And recently John Hamilton retired after 49 years on KGO, a record that will never be approached.

  3. I used to send Jim Eason fake notices for stage plays, and he would read them over the air. The Cinnabar Theater in Petaluma hated me.

  4. A true rogue's gallery every one of them. I started listening to talk radio with Ira Blu. Hoping that todays generation understands what is like to listen instead of just talk.

  6. Wow, Shawn Nix and Mary Ellen Geist. More brains than the rest of that composite put together.

  7. Where's Dick Leonard, the city hall reporter? And Carl Haberly? And my favorite, Bob Trebor, who's last name was actually Escobar. Susan Kennedy, a favorite of mine now on KCBS, is actually Elizabeth Hernandez. She's a true pro. Others missing in the photo: Jay Snyder, Jazzbeau Collins, Larry Doyle, Red Rush, Monty Stickles, Gretchen Wells, Leo Ciolino, Greg Jarrod and even Ralph Barbieri, who filled in on weekends. Off mike, the good guys were Wygant, Rosie, Jazzbeau, Gretchen Wells, Dick Leonard, Greg Edmonds, Joy Brown, Carla Perez, Gene Rusco, Pete Wilson, Trebor and even alt-right Melanie Morgan. The cold fish were Edel, Dunbar, Ken Beck, Steve Walsh, Owen Spann, Chris Clark (an ick), Lee Rogers, and of course, the Mickey. When ABC sold the station, the end was nigh.

  10. Wonderful seeing those faces. Wish you could do a " where are they now" segment. I know Jennifer Jones is in LA. I love hearing her voice. Jim Eason was one of the best. We have been listening to KGO for 49 years. Next year will be our 50th wedding anniversary. That is how I know how long I have been listening.

  11. Jim Eason spent the first 30 minute plus of each show reading right wing crap then on to a few calls to fill the hour. At times memories are better than the reality.

  12. Somebody asked a question ...... if Rosie Allen co-hosted a Sex Talk show. I remember Don Chamberlain had a Sex Talk show similar to his old 1970's "California Girls", in the 1980's and Rosie I think read the news during the breaks. Don would tease her about some of the spicy topics he covered but I don't think she was a co-host. Was it KGO on FM ??
