THESE IDIOTIC SPORTS-TALK RADIO STATIONS --KNBR hosts in the morning talking about "the 49ers draft situation in April"--really? People are dying in the streets of NY; the hospitals are over-burdened with patients; cities are shut down and KNBR is talking about football? A distraction? Not really. People, most people get it. We're in a CRISIS! We have priorities now. Who the hell cares about sports now? Survival, yes. I'm embarrassed when I listen to these morons who wouldn't know how to talk about life and death, the REAL WORLD, if their life (no pun) depended on it
*On Sunday night CBS Sports radio, ironically carried on KNBR, the host, a guy named John Neer out of NY, took a call from some guy in Portland, Oregon --the caller nailed it: he said he was a big Steelers fan but, "I'm not even thinking about sports now--am I in the norm?" No sir, you are right about just about everyone these days. What a good call. A very real call and real host. No sound effects needed.
*Just about everyone on TV News stations here is showing some of their anchors reporting from home. I'll REPEAT: fine, do the social distancing thing, wonderful and dandy, but STOP the gimmicky chatter and giggling. YOU LOSE all credibility when you begin to highlight yourself endlessly and on and on and on...You want REAL adulation? Just do it and then, SHUT UP! If you have to tell us countless times how much you "care"--than all you are is a gigantic circus act. Don't try to fool the viewers, they can tell you're a clown act. malarkey
*I WAS just beginning to applaud KNBR's John Lund for his much more adult and less and less sophomoric behavior when now, of late, Lund has returned to being a clown, a real juvenile jerk. His penchant to talking about sex and frivolity in a time when people, even some dumb people, are wanting real info and real, genuine discourse, is an outrage. Lund is stupid, I get it. Maybe he doesn't get the pulse of the Bay Area. Maybe he's consumed about his own personal well-being.
I was told by a good contact that Lund is "paranoid" over the fact that his future is in doubt at KNBR. Why? The 10-2PM slot he occupies with Greg Papa has seen a dramatic ratings drop. KNBR has been soundly beaten by the idiot on 95.7 FM, "The Game"--I don't have the breakdowns but I know it's occurred. KNBR has to mull a host firing (because of the virus' meltdown on advertising) and Lund thinks he's the first person to get the ax. He's right.
*NICE TO HEAR Pat Thurston on KGO Sunday night complete with great calls, awesome interviews, excellent pacing. Thurston was broadcasting from home --like pretty much everyone these days--a few times, her internet line went kaput, but was soon back in action. It's OK, Pat, well worth the technical foul-ups, your show continues to get better and better in these crazy times.

ReplyDeleteRe: KNBR, I don't see a problem with them talking about the draft, etc. They also have spent significant time acknowledging current world events and that sports is insignificant now. But they have to talk about something, and they are equipped to talk sports more than anything else. There are tons of other places for people to go for serious discussion about COVID-19. People also need a diversion. They can't go out to dinner, go to a movie, etc. So if talking about mundane sports topics is a brief escape, I see nothing wrong with that. Or with being stupid and silly from time to time. I agree with you that Lund's constant sex banter is juvenile and detracts from the P & L show. The ratings I've seen show P & L pretty much tied with The Game's show in that time slot, which has to be a huge disappointment to KNBR. But unless they are ditching Papa too, I don't see Lund going anywhere. Papa has been very clear that Lund is who he likes working with and he might not want to do sports talk radio without him.
ReplyDeletehow could lund and the great arrogant one be losing to the morons at the fm station?..the three guys there, one guy was greg papa's hand picked partner after lund left the first time, papa got tired of working with him and bailed without even a phone call..the second guy won a talk show host "contest" and moonlights selling sex pills, and the third guy was an ex sportswriter who was fired, and then rehired again from the same station within six months..
