Thurston and Rothmann on Trump Impeachment; 2020 Election; They Both Want Weekend Time. KGO Should Oblige

WITH IMPEACHMENT TRIAL IN HIGH GEAR; with a 2020 presidential election just nine months away; with the Donald Trump spectacle nowhere leaving in sight; there's a lot to talk about and especially on talk radio. Yet even with a talk format suited for the very essence of the above, there's very little time on KGO Radio, the Bay Area's 810 AM talk juggernaut old and new.

Which is all the more reason KGO should have an extended program on weekends-- Saturday would work great and have both Pat Thurston and John Rothmann in studio and taking calls. Interviewing political analysts and pols too. It could be both entertaining and cathartic.

This is an historical year no matter what. It is also what KGO used to be in its prime. And it could make money for the station because it's three or four hours that could be sold to a local bank or car dealer in a sponsorship that would offset KGO's taped shows that are boring but make money for the station. We all get that. But it would tap a good reservoir for the local listening audience and the Bay Area yearns for political discourse --especially when live and local.

Both Rothmann and Thurston have already, on air, signed up for the gig. They have both willingly stated on air that they want to talk about what's going on now and what takes place in November. In fact, there's a rumor Rothmann never wants to leave the studio these days. If KGO wanted 24-hour broadcasts, he'd be there. His passion is obvious and Thurston's vigor is equally pronounced too. She'd be an excellent co-pilot.

  1. Too bad they only like listening to callers who echo what they say. Call in with a dissenting opinion, get hollered at and hung up on. Chip and Nikki are the same way. Don't get me wrong, I love listening to them but wish they had more patience with alternate opinions.

    1. I think John does an admirable job of listening to callers who disagree with him, if they won't answer his question eventually he hangs up on them, or if they keep talking over him, or repeating the same points again and again. Pat has less patience, but she does engage callers who disagree with her, but she has no patience if they are ignorant, misinformed or lying. How many dissenting callers does Hannity, Rush and Savage take?

    2. Chip and Rosie Perez are low IQ radio for low information listeners.

      Stick to "comedy" clubs, "Chip".

    3. I listen to both right wing and left wing radio. You know neither side is honest so you listen to both and try to form a complete picture of what is going on. Chip always cries that MAGA people only listen to Fox News and are stuck in that echo chamber, but Chip is guilty of only listening to MSNBC and is stuck in that echo chamber.

Would love these left leaning broadcasters have guests on that are right leaning and have an open dialog about what is going on. I would also say ditto to Hannity, Rush and Savage having left leaning guests on without yelling at them and shouting them down.

  2. Why use a current picture of John while using a 20 year old pic of Pat?

  4. The Cumulus folks make BIG BUCKS selling those Vitamins, Investment Classes and Herbal Dick Bills...If the don't PLAY they don't get paid. I'm sure that if John and Pat are willing to do this as a freebee they might get some consideration, But not unless they come with Advertisers attached like Rothman does...Cal Mart Super Market is his own account.

  5. Pat nor John move the needle! KGO has been dead 9 years now with no rebirth in sight. The cloud will need big national names to bring it back! We all know the $$ is not there to make KGO A wanted commodity in the AM radio listener world.I don't know what the future holds or how to fix KGO i do know it will not be cheap or easy. Translating to probably will never happen!

    1. You couldn't be more wrong, KGO had great rating when all their hosts were local. They tried some national host like Dr. Drew, which big names are you thinking about, not sure there are big national host who are liberal, and we certainly don't need Hannity, Rush etc. on KGO they can be heard on kSFO. 910 am has some national host Tom Hartmann, Randy Roades, Stephanie Miller, I listen a little to Randy and sometimes to Tom, they are ok, but John and Pat are much more interesting and they cover local stories, like the fires and tonight John spoke about closing Market Street to cars. KGO has finally made some good decisions, don't mess with it.

    1. Pat and John are the best things about KGO now. They should have given John his own show back a long time ago and I'm very glad that they moved Pat from weekends back to weekdays. This is where they should be and it should have been that way long ago. KGO improved dramatically when they made these changes. Not pre-blood bath level, but still, a big step in the right direction.

  7. Pat and John work very well together and with the presidential election coming up they will have plenty of topics to cover. What I worry about is if KGO's ratings don't improve they might sell or change the station's format.

  9. You are very uneducated about being a communists. Liberal and communist is not the same, social democrat and communists is not the same. John is pretty middle of the road, also being Jewish he is a strong supporter of Israel, which most communist's are not. I'm from Denmark, we are a social democracy as is many European countries, we have free press, can own property and business, none of that is compatible with a true communists agenda. Pat is more liberal than John, and she could possible be called a social democrat, she like Bernie. I for one, although liberal, is not a Bernie fan, not a fan of higher taxes and giving a lot of stuff away.

  10. I have to say I was turned on to Rothmann back when Chris Clarke left KGO for parts unknown. I loved the hour-long interview show Rothmann did back then. While I'm a fan, the real fan was my mother who loved Rothmann's historical knowledge on politics and other issues. Before she passed away late last year, years ago she called Rothmann and they had a nice little chat. At the end of the call he called her a "delight" it made her day.
I think Rothmann and Thurston shows on the weekends would be great. Would love to hear them on Sunday nights, my fav time to listen to radio.
