    1. If he shoots someone on Market and Beale, yes, anything else? He has pretty much eternal job security.

    2. As does Trixie. You gotta wonder why. The cream does not float to the top. The poop does.

    3. Agreed with Rich, this is San Francisco he will create big headlines if wrongfully let go.

    1. He probably looked at his rent payment and said I need more dough. Clearly, KPIX is not an avenue form more dough.

    2. Which one of them is? They're all pretty miserly these days.

    3. Peck was on the PIX Morning News, this morning.

  4. You keep saying Trixie's demise in imminent but it clearly isn't. How does someone that awful and incompetent hang on to her job?

    1. She knows people --a powerful woman in the ABC/Disney food chain, specifically --in high places. Yes, I would agree, she's survived and is still on the KGO payroll. I don't know how and why other than she maybe has something on all of them, that's my only take now.

      Delete
    2. Need to find that "powerful woman" and remind her that for a station to succeed, getting along within a staff is more important than ever. Unfortunately, that has never existed in broadcasting middle management.

      Delete
    3. The last two ABC O&O leaders have been and are currently women. Well. you know how that "old girls club"is. They stick together, those broads. *sarcasm*

Note: these two have brought more innovation and positive change to the stations and the company then any man who was in the same position. So don't you think if there was someone as heinous as you purport Tracey to be, she would be gone? Especially in this litigious time we live in?
      What a load of crap.

  7. How do you like Greg Papa’s touchdown call? Asking for a friend 😊

    1. Kev, don't tell anyone but I'm beginning to like Greg's call. The moment has arrived. Yes, there a win away from winning it all. His TD call is now justified. ---btw, Greg is a good guy.

    2. Somehow, the proof in Papa's likability is often seen during Warriors pre- and post-game broadcasts, before-, during-, and the current after-glory run.
We shall found out how the 49er Faithful really feel after this season ends a week from Sunday.

    3. You are starting to like Papa Rich??? How could you? The other day he was talking about how he was going to be so loud and screaming if the Niners win that we will have to turn down the volume. He is making it all about himself Rich. Learn from the greats like Vin Scully and step away from the mic and let the moment happen. Of course Mr. Ego will in no way allow that. And his TD call sucks along with gravel voice Tim Ryans screaming "Feels Great Baby" after every TD. UGH!!!

  8. Hi Rich - Is ABC7's terribly annoying tagline, "How to Build a Better Bay Area" part of the overall ABC/Disney platform, or just the bay area? It is repeated so often during their broadcast that I can't watch it anymore.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's a way to "connect" with the viewer. Yeah, sort of phony but Disney loves it.

      Delete
    2. Building a better bay area it's a total joke! If ABC 7 wants to help "build a better bay area" they should all get out and clean up the filthy streets of SF or go help build houses like habitat for humanity. Actions speak louder than words. Total and complete marketing ploy.

      Delete
    3. Actually, they have. The Disney VoluntEARS from ABC7, Lucasfilm and Pixar have banded together to build playgrounds, fill goodie bags for critically ill children in local hospitals, participate in the SF Pride Parade and many other similar venues. No one is forced to participate and these events have continually been very successful and helpful to the community. This year any Disney employee will be given a paid day off to volunteer at the charity of their choice. I might volunteer to wipe the vitriol off the chins of the folks at the Home of the Cynical Ex Employees & Hack Writers Home. Somebody has to do it.

  10. Hi Rich: You said in a recent blog post that KPIX is in negotiations to bring in a new anchor to start in late Feb/early March. Do you have any idea who this new person might be & who would he/she replace. Hopefully either Alan "Stone-Face' Martin or Veronica "Hair Twirling" De La Cruz. Rich-I absolutely love your blog! 1. Cary, the new guy is supposed to be at the desk in late Feb. Maybe not to necessarily replace someone.

    2. With Elizabeth Cook back from maternity leave, we shall see if the extra pep in PIX's step stays. Think of PIX as a squeaky closet door the past four months, and Cook provided the WD-40. But it (the PIX newsroom) will squeak loud again.

    3. Speaking of PIX changes, notice the weather anchor flip flop between Hackney and Peck. Interesting to see how long that lasts.

  11. I'll understand if you can't respond to this question, but it has been on my mind for a while. And one other poster commented on the issue, not that long ago. Dennis O'Donnell has had some struggles with speech impairment in the last two years or so. When it occurs, it is hard to watch. Especially given his tenure, and generally upbeat on-air personality. Has there been any concern, in both personal and professional contexts, in regard to that problem?

  13. Forgetting product quality, Do you actually believe the old KGO model would make more net $ than the current model? I miss the old KGO, but if that model working $ wise, someone would do it, right?

    1. An entirely different business today. And not necessarily for the better. product quality? Like you I miss the old style and I don't care about today's environment.

    2. Considering that KGO's most recent rating was only 1.2, I think that it will go: all syndicated talk, foreign language(non Spanish), or dark.

  14. Hi Rich, not really a question but crossing my fingers that BJL's time on the M&M show is coming to an end.

She was out today and Murph was doing the pre-traffic ad reads - SO refreshing to hear someone read who actually knows the English language.

She also didn't have a chance to ruin the Joe Montana interview, which was also refreshing.

You won four Super Bowls, numerous Super Bowl MVPs, you were a NFL MVP, Sports Illustrated Man of the Year, named one of the top 10 QBs of all time and were elected into the Hall of Fame in your first year of eligibility. 15. Why is Somerville, Haener, and Martin from KTVU on Sundays-Thursday and not on the usual Monday-Friday shift?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Because the Friday slot is least-watched day of the week. It's more a business decision by KTVU than the two torsos.

  18. From Rich at 11:38 am "Kev, don't tell anyone but I'm beginning to like Greg's call...btw, Greg is a good guy."

WHAT?!? You have been mercilessly lacerating 1. Papa and 2. his call for 1. years and 2. months, now you are softening on the call AND he's "a good guy"?

    Holy cow!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have ripped Greg, yeah, and guess what? Now that they've reached the promised land, the call is excited and justified. I always said GP was a solid PBP guy and I've never deviated from that; I thought he overmodulated and was over the top when the time and moment didn't justify the overly-crazy call.

As for Papa the man, he's a good guy. I can change too. I have. He's a good dude. I'll leave it at that.

    5. I strongly believe that the Rise of Right Wing Radio is the main reason for the terrible political atmosphere of today. No one can work across the aisle in Washington. If they do they are pilloried by the talkers. Remember when Chris Christie hugged Obama when he came to NJ to offer assistance after that devastating hurricane. He was and still is excoriated for having the gall to hug Obama even though he was just offered a lot of help fix his state.

Sean Hannity and his ilk know that if they just keep repeating things eventually it will become fact to their millions of listeners.

  23. Hi Rich, long time reader, first time commenter. If you're still taking questions, can you tell me why Chip says "you know" all the time? Does he get paid for each time he uses the phrase "you know"? Does KGO have a program director who listens to the airchecks of hosts and helps them improve their shows by pointing out things like this, you know what I mean?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If I were to guess I'd say that Chip (like most radio announcers) was taught early on to avoid dead air at all costs. It's also the reason there are a lot of "umm"s in broadcasting (some more obvious than others) and why some broadcasters use a LOT of verbiage; kills time while minimizing dead air...

  24. This is sacrilege for ME to say, but KPIX is perfectly capable of killing the 2 Birds (Liz Cook & De La Cruz) dilemma in ONE STONE with Goodrich.

    2. I'll speak for Rich and say YES. JG is better than most of their other anchors put together. Why they under-utilize her because she has the gall to be over 40 is beyond me.

As for De La Cruz, I see her kind all the time when I'm up in the North Bay. They run in front of my car at night and sometimes I hit them, because even when I honk and flash my lights they just stand there, frozen. They almost never yell "GAME OOOONN," however.

    3. JG has the best of all worlds being a SF tv diva AND being an East Bay PTA mom in the community she grew up.
