PHIL MATIER will continue to do his radio spots at KCBS --they're independent of KGO-TV. It was an advantage for Matier to be at PIX (and KCBS too) to share his content and he of course didn't have to leave the building at 855 Battery to do his TV News obligations. At KGO, he merely has to cross the street down to 900 Front.
*I hear they're just trying out Darren Peck on the weather at PIX which is good because he's awful on TV. Which is good news for Brian Hackney.
Catherine Heenan |
Heenan has an old-school style and her news acumen is both admired and appreciated. Old-school as in really broadcasting, anchoring as anchoring should be and not acting like she's in a movie. It sure adds to the newscast.

*Classy of KCBS to run same-day 30th anniv, earthquake promos with an earthquake insurance company as sponsor.
*YOU COME HERE for TRUTH and HONEST TAKES and you're going to get it now: The earthquake aniv. coverage was way OVER THE TOP and an A-grade example of SATURATION coverage.
It was nice and interesting to read the stories and watch and hear the whole events of October 17th, 1989 at 5: 04 PM.
I get it, you have to emphasize it. Because why? Oh yeah, it's the 30th anniversary but OK, do your story and show some videos; play some actualities and describe that day but I'm sorry, going on and on and on, doesn't make for good TV nor radio news. It happened, it was a tough day involving loss of life and buildings tumbling down but it not the real, catastrophic disaster we're in for if the scientists are right. And as bad as it was and visually horrid, think of a same earthquake at the same 6.9 register centered in Downtown Oakland on the Hayward fault, that's your mother of all disasters and you think a day without power will be tough?
*The refinery fire in Crockett coverage, especially on KTVU was well done Props to Frank Somerville and Julie Haener who were terrific on the 5 PM cast and delivered solid reporting and asked the right questions; when at a time, ad-libbing is not the best feature of a majority of the news outlets here, Somerville and Haener were spot on and informative in a changing situation --I also have to give props to KGO's Dan Ashley and reporter, Lyanne Melendez, who was at the scene virtually from the first report of the explosion and fire.
Frank Somerville and Julie Haener |
*That OBNOXIOUS jewelry store ad that runs and runs and runs --seemingly every two minutes, needs an extended vacation --plus, I don't give a rat's ass that Jennifer Lopez walked the red carpet with their jewelry. So too Lady Ga Ga.
If Haener asked intelligent questions then a writer or intern majoring in journalism must have fed them to her. There ain't two brain cells inside that purdy head.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you re: Catherine Heenan. She continues to be among the best.
ReplyDeleteYes!
Delete"Good, and lovely to observe too." Well-put, Rich!
Kumasi Aaron...From what I have seen recently, nothing to get excited about. There is a young lady who continually impresses me. Her performance since day one is stage perfection. A beautiful personality, a smile that makes you smile. Always cheerful and upbeat, a magnetic charm which draws you in and won't let you go. She is an absolute pleasure to watch and the best dressed female newsperson. Stand up and take a bow, pat yourself on your back, you more than deserve it...Robin Winston!
ReplyDeleteThe Women Are The News.
I always have liked Heenan’s work. I think KTVU’s coverage was good because of Tom Vacar on scene
ReplyDeleteDarrin Peck is outstanding. He offers insights as to why such and such is happening. He is thorough and complete, professional, explains, and, even more importantly, educates on weather phenomenon. He is the kind of weather forecaster that I would assign as homework were I teaching K-12 because watching is so informative and educational. He inspires an interest in STEM. The forecast is also a pleasure to watch and educational for adults. He makes the segment interesting.
ReplyDeleteYeah OK Darren, quit posting on here about yourself. A little obvious buddy!
DeleteI don't want to take a class I just want to know if the wind is gonna start a fire and burn my house down. I didn't watch him but saying it's like going to school does not make me want to.
DeleteKPIX needs a culture change in the newsroom and you can notice it while watching on tv...disagree on Darren Peck on doing weather which he is pretty good but I know one thing you and I agree is somehow someway put Marria Medina on the anchor desk either morning or evening time...
ReplyDeleteDarren Peck is doing a great job. His analysis of wind speed/direction/location during the "emergency" was well done. Give him time to become more social with the others.
ReplyDeleteOk I'll say it, as much as we want her to stay over here at KTVU if PIX were smart they'd steal Kyla before she's locked down in a contract. She was on for Bill all week and we've gotten nothing but great feedback. Our ratings stay high when she's on. Of course I doubt PIX management is savvy enough to see that she could steal some of our audience and hand it to them. On second thought never mind, keep that Darren guy HA! Im sure he's fantastic!
ReplyDeleteLOVE Kyla. The best I've seen at KTVU in a long time.
DeleteI was (nicely) surprised that KCBS did that whole 30th anniversary thing. I didn't think they still had the resources to do that kind of thing. And personally, I don't care about the sponsor, except that I was glad that it wasn't 800 got junk, or that woman talking about ED.
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I were just saying how much we enjoyed watching her this week. We used to love her on The Weather Channel too. She's very clear and gives great information but does it in a very easy way that you can follow.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever been to Catherine Heenan's house? Someone who never wanted to socialize with anyone at work ever before now invites everyone to see her fabo new house constantly. Gets tiring. Back when she didn't have the fabo house, she had time for no one.
ReplyDeleteShe must have a great housekeeper. At work, she does not pick up after herself.
DeleteHeenan is steady and unflappable. She always has been. Gracious and thoughtful, authentic and sincere. All rare qualities in today's anchors.
ReplyDeleteSteady, unflappable, gracious, thoughtful, authentic and sincere. Wow! I find her flat, boring, old and tired. When she is on the air my TV broadcasts in black and white. If she is so good then why does KRON only use her for some online streaming news and vacation relief? When on the main KRON news, you can see she has no rapport with the other anchors. And that laugh. She just says "Ha" over and over and over again. If she ever laughs on air again you will see. I really like that Justine Waldman.
DeleteI have not seen Kumasi on the weekends since Zouves left. Is she taking over Zouves' spot?
ReplyDeleteYes on Catherine. I like her a lot, and also Ken Wayne's co-anchor, a woman not young and not another bimbo. Unlike KPIX's old man-young woman teams.
ReplyDeleteI also like Ken's easy going manner, and disagree with you. He brings an authentic and graceful gravity to the news.
