Yeah, NBC Lands Vicky Nguyen from San Jose To 30 Rock; Still Wooing Raj Mathai; KNTV: Is it San Jose or SF? Giants' Ratings Down at KNBR and NBC Sports Bay Area; Monday Wash

YOU THOUGHT I ERRED on my report about NBC wooing KNTV (NBC Bay Area) lead anchor, Raj Mathai and instead targeting Vicky Nguyen.

You'd be wrong.

Yes, 30 Rock nailed the Investigative Reporter from San Jose and she's on her way to NY, good for the Vickster.

But GUESS WHAT?

NBC News still has its sight on Mathai who appears flattered but probably remaining in the Bay Area because of mostly family issues; Mathai's wife recently gave birth to their second child and Raj not too long ago signed a multi-year extension paying him around $450K a year through 2022 with a mutual option in '23.

NY has sweetened its offer but so far, Mathai hasn't budged. I don't blame him.

Nguyen will work on NBC's special Investigative projects and become one of its key correspondents and do occasional weekend anchoring too.

*SPEAKING of Raj and NBC Bay Area, a thorny age-old question remains: Do they want to be a San Jose/Silicon Valley station or another SF outlet that happens to be in the SouthBay? For years, as Silicon Valley became the technological hot zone, NBC banked on its San Jose O and O to reign in on Internet news; business reporting and yes, of course, tech-heavy emphasis on news, only even though San Jose has tech credo, San Francisco is the Bay Area cultural and media mecca; KNTV has to figure it out one way or the other.

*AS THE SF GIANTS FLAIL AWAY on the field, there ratings are following their early-season meager performance.

At KNBR, the Giants' flagship radio station since 1979, overall ratings are down an astounding 21 percent and on cable, NBC Sports Bay Area, viewership numbers are 16 percent downward spiral. It's early, sure, but it's not a good sign.

There's always an upside for the listeners.

  1. Why is Rich Lieberman so delighted about the Giants' decline?
The answer is obvious isn't it?

  2. Glad to see the postgame wrap shorten.
It was way too long. The postgame wrap would just drag on and on, until boredom had set in.
    Enough analysis.

  3. Watch as Giants attendance goes to all-time lows at their current ballpark, as the season progresses and it becomes apparent not only are they horrible, but they're also the most boring team in baseball...

    1. Also, the Giants players have absolutely zero incentive/motivation to play for a lame duck coach.

    2. It also might be a challenge to play for some lame-brained Front Office personnel.

Maybe there's a different way to put this...just sayin... :)

  5. For comparison purposes, how are ratings for the Oakland A's?

    1. Have no idea but I would much rather watch the more exciting A's over the Giants.

  6. Does it matter? Do they care ? Murp, Mac, Fitz, Brooks and Lund are unlistenable. I gave up on them about 3 years ago

  7. Meanwhile, the Bay Area has a pro sports team in the playoffs (Game 1 is Wednesday in San Jose), but you wouldn't know it from The Sports Bleeder.

    1. The Sharks were bleeding toward the end of the regular season. Hope they can reverse that trend against Vegas.

  8. Nice to see the pushy Anchor Babies and DACA kids getting to the top so fast. How many natives did they step all over to do it? See you all on your way down.

  10. Nobody is watching the Giants, because they're a "Shitty" team and everyone is watching the Warriors.

  11. KNBR is bad but it is just plain slow and boring during the baseball season. When pitchers and catchers report in February the knibber goes even more all in on the Giants. I mean come on Marty Laurie is on at least 16 hours a day on the weekends. I can't listen to his sleepy voice talk about the 1948 Mets for 5 minutes much less all day. Then who wants to listen to a replay of a baseball game? Then there is the post game show and Kruk asking Kuip who is his player of the game. It's usually some guy who hit's a line drive for a base hit. Then Kruk gets all, Great choice Great choice. Absolutely riveting radio.

Also as 1:44 says above we have a professional sports team in the Bay Area that placed second in its division. Is going up against a very good team on Wednesday and The Sports Leader has no clue. I understand hockey is not huge in the Bay Area but a sports talk station that bills itself as the biggest and best should at least mention them once in a while. Playoff hockey is the most exciting hard hitting event of any sport. Nothing matches it. Baseball players shower themselves with champagne for winning a one game wild card playoff game. Hockey players will not celebrate or even touch a division trophy unless they win the Cup.

    1. 3:10 PM: Unfortunately, The Sports Bleeder doesn't care about hockey because it's not carried on their station and also it'll bump heads with that mediocre baseball team that they have financial stake in. Conflict of interest huge here. That station only cares about what they're carrying and anything they have a stake in. Pity. This market is so bad when it comes to sports radio. A joke.

  12. Maybe Larry Baer should retire, it's already looking like it's too late for this season. Losers for the 3rd season in a row , 3 strikes and your out!

    1. Better yet fire the egotistical Baer and force him to take Amy G and Jon Miller with him. All three are so in love with themselves it's sickening.

    2. Gary and Larry criticizing the OF moves something that would not have happened if Lock Step Larry was just a phone call away.

    3. I concur with 4:59; notice how fans scatter all over Oracle Park when Amy G heads their way. Miller will retire on his own at the end of the season. But when Lockstep returns - depending on whether more afraid workers speak out against Baer - sadly, he will still never let go of that superstition that is the inane one. Once Boch and Miller (and maybe D Kuip, Kruk, or both) retire, get Amy G out of there and bring in a baseball equivalent to the solid Kerith Burke that the Warriors have. BTW, tip of the hat to both winter Bay teams!

    4. Maybe Amy G was the mystery chick on Larry's phone, which caused the fight with his wife? That might explain some things, such as why is she still employed?

  13. KNTV is owned by comcast cable.
They want you to think "NBC bay area" is a cable channel that you need to pay for $$$

You will never hear them say
    "Channel 11"
Free over the air... with antenna

    1. All of their advertising says "Channel 11 - Cable 3" and there is a page on their website dedicated to telling people around the area where to point their antennas.

  19. If KNBR is going to sacrifice Saturday and Sunday to Marty Lurie at least give us non-baseball fans something other than gambling goombas and annuity salesmen for those few hours the Giants aren't on. I know they are getting paid to run these shows but you couldn't pay me to listen to them.

  20. When you examine more closely, Raj's $450K isn't REALLY a whole lot of money when it comes to California/the Silicon Valley:
    To wit:

Let's say his wife is a stay-at-home mom...or at the very least, taking time off to stay home to raise the kids--leaving Raj's $450K as the sole source of income:
    $450K/12=$37,500 per month

    4% (pre-tax for 401K deduction: 37,500 -1,500=36,000
    35% fed income tax rate: 36,000- 12,600 =23,400
    family medical/dental/vision insurance: 23,400 - (??guessing 1,800??= 21,600

    So, that's $21,600 per month after taxes/deductions.
Let's say Raj lives in a $3 million home, so:
    21,600-$19,000 mortgage/property tax/insurance = 2,600 remaining
I bet he and his wife each have nice cars:
    2,600 -1,600 car/insurance for two per month=1,000 remaining.

So he's left w/$1,000 per month for food, cable TV, cell phones, internet, etc.

MAN...Raj might have to take that NYC gig!
