MONDAY MASH

Claudine Wong is playing nice to all her friends at KTVU; she's even attempting to smile more often; at least more than her current every other decade --why? Wong thinks she's the straw that stirs the drink at KTVU and wants the recognition; the star treatment; oh, and DA MONEY!

By Wong's account, she is the power in the morning show. She makes no bones about it. Said a KTVU staffer to 415 Media:

"Claudine is reaching out but it's become sort of weird; she's like totally not her actual self. We can't figure it out yet."

Oh, I can.

Wong has told her buds at KTVU that she wants more of a prominent role and that she expects to be treated as such. When your ego soars so does your demands. Ultimately, it'll be up to KTVU and the Foxies if Wong is pacified.

*Meanwhile over at KGO, Natasha Zouves continues to play the mystery game --she's been off KGO'

s air since a weird fall on the studio floor at 900 Front. THE INSIDE DOPE: Zouves fall left her in a lot of pain both literally and figuratively --and THIS!: A chance to weigh all her options and exact revenge on her onetime ally, the insufferable lout known as Reggie Aqui.

Zouves has eyes on LA; I already told you. Her Circle7 reign has been trying and slightly miserable. She really hasn't figured out San Francisco and the Bay Area in general. He took the morning gig because no one else wanted it but Natasha figured it would help her career and catapult her to Ell_lay where she really wants to be. But all that is on hold while she still recuperates from the bizarre hair-goo-slippage --we at 415 Media are still all over it.

Don't expect to see Zouves on KGO anytime soon.

*Insiders at KRON tell me that Darya Folsom's ego has hit the wall big time and that even though she still thinks her you-know-what doesn't stink, that her time is pretty much up at the albatross independent TV station.

Darya Folsom
Folsom's hijinks are considered a joke in the local industry and her only attributes? Her sinking violets? They've begun to sag. Just like her career. And women cannot stand her. Women viewers. KRON has made its morning newscast presentable and barely legit but not because of Folsom and her acts of stupidity and vulgarity, it's a wonder she's even still relevant --oh, wait a minute, there's a reason.

KRON management did an internal study and found that more and more viewers are put off by Folsom's lonesome dove acts and that she continues to not only embarrass herself but the station too --which given KRON's status, is really, really, really, HARD TO DO!

Jon Miller counting down the time
*Any day now --maybe sooner rather than later, the Giants will announce that Jon Miller will retire at years end and that Dave Flemming will become the #1 voice of the Bay Area's SF baseball team. It's a hunch based on info sent my way by industry folks and simple common sense and math. To wit:

Flemming recently signed a new deal with the team and it's a gigantic raise and indication that Flemming is considered by the Giants' higher-ups as the millennial orgy; Miller has seen and had had better days and no longer carries the badge that has made him popular and likeable. The frequent stories are no longer that funny and his ubiquitous impressions are passe. It may be harsh but it's true nonetheless it's down the pike and in the stretch run.

QUICKIES...

*It's not popular to say but it's also why you come here to get the truth too: while Miller is likely gone after this year, those in the know tell me it's very likely Mike Krukow will be gone too, not necessarily next year but sooner rather than later, as Krukow's medical malady renders his physical movement an extreme hardship and handicap.

*Meanwhile, Duane Kuiper seems and sounds just plain bored.

*KGO Radio salaries for John Rothmann and Pat Thurston: roughly $125K a year for those of you that wanted to know.

*If KGO-TV (and ABC by extension) don't sit down and smell the roses that is Larry Beil and his arrogance and outward jerkism toward fellow workers, they might be in for quite an observance--more like an observance of LAWYERS! The natives are tired of being schmucked around by Beil's blatant act of bullying.

*Look up the definition of "yenta" and then listen, if you can stomach it, Bonnie-Jill Laughlin on KNBR.

  1. Claudine Wong used to be pretty good. Lately it seems she has problems with enunciation. She tends to read her stories too fast giving the impression that she is bored and/or disinterested. Clean it up at little Claudine, and you may get what you want from management.

    1. I don’t mean to be disrespectful... ah, who am I kidding.. I can’t force myself to listen to Claudine Wong mumble through her teeth in her monotoned over-paced cadence. She always out paces the prompter.. she sounds like you just woke her up in the 3rd day of a bad flu virus. She’s cute and I’m sure shes quite likable just not good at reading news.

  2. Kuiper does sound bored or half asleep. Maybe that's why KNBR dropped him to once a week.

    1. He is getting up there in age. He always seemed to broadcast at a more leisurely pace. I always thought it was the Wisconsin in him.

    2. I actually admire the relaxed “bored” sound of D. Kuiper. He lets the game breath a little and doesn’t try to fill the space with tired stories or senseless chatter. Less is more in baseball broadcasts. I’ll miss him and Kruk when they’re gone. I subscribe to the MLB package and good broadcast teams are few and far. Go Giants.

  3. Good news on both Miller and Folsom. People can grow tired of you when you think your $#!% doesn't sink. It will happen sooner rather than later for Ms.Wong too.

  4. Yet another solid post. Good news information here. The Fat Man needs to go. If Kuiper is bored, he needs to go deep and then he's out of here! Giants baseball is so boring anyway. It's really funny that the Chronicle has become their soap box promoting everything that's going on at the concession stand. How about some stuff on the team itself? That's not candy-coated?

  5. Regarding the Larry Baer fiasco I wonder if Kruk and Kuip will continue to kiss Baer's butt in their broadcasts during the game. Hang on! this could get interesting!

  6. Flemming isn't all that millennial himself. Not that far off in age from Miller when he got the gig 20+ years ago or Greenwald back in the 70s.

Miller is a rare local boy make good story. Remember his young season with the A's World Series before being unceremoniously sent packing - only to return 20+ years later a national name for the Giants. And calling them through their dynasty years.

    1. Good point about Flem and nicely put about the Big Kahuna (local boy made good). Kahuna grew up listening to Russ Hodges and Lon Simmons (like Dennis Eckersley and Joe Morgan). As a Giants fan growing up listening to Lon, I can to identify with Jon more as a Bay Area native than as a hired hand from ESPN.

  8. D.F. Is to old to awing from a pole and she hit the WALL along time ago. Sad, she doesn't realize she is a joke, sagging T's and all. Just go away bitch.

  9. I like your blog much better since you "quit" and came back! Thanks Rich, for coming back! Now, I am also thankful that you continue to monitor the situation with Natasha Zouves. I know you don't like her, but I always have, and I do wonder what is going to happen with her. So thanks for staying on top of Natasha [I mean, the Natasha situation]!

  10. Two things...

I hate to see Kruk's health deteriorate like it is. He was a fun player to watch and he truly bleeds baseball. One of those athletes that probably would have played the game for free if he had to. Wish him the best

My wife is one of those women that can't stand Darya. After a few minutes I will hear the words "God, I can't stand this women!! Nice picture you posted though. I think that is why guys put up with her for a little longer than women do.

  11. There's no doubt Darya's days are numbered at KRON. Everyone but Pero hates her, and he's hitting on anything and everything. (He has no game!) He still talks bad about her - age, gravity, and high maintenance have him trying to move on. Their split up probably ends her run at KRON, not his. She will have to leave the market if she can't find a sugar daddy into those knee slappers.

    1. I see Darya fraught with insecutities that force her to behave as she does. I believe if she were in a more secure occupation and perhaps a relationship with modicum of reciprocity, she would bloom as a poised and beautiful young lady.

  12. Natasha won't come back. She is already 6 months sick leave since last August and starting April 1st, it has passed 6 months and KGO can let her go. One reason why Veronica came back within 6 months.

Welcome Jessica Castro, one main Morning News Anchor!!!

  13. Claudine Wong needs work. A smile, wardrobe consultant, some speech and reading help...nothing about her says prime time.

    1. I agree. Her forte was reporting and even though she has gotten over the sullen beginnings to her anchoring introduction, she and Castenada were not "born to it."

  14. Maybe Darya can be a candidate for Elite MD spots that KRON runs constantly.

  15. - "Playing Nice" at The Firm? Gee, what a surprise!
    - Zouves wanting to avoid Aqui? Yep. Poor Castro & Kristine Sze!
    - Folsom? Puh-leeze!
    - Is Miller really seeing the writing on the wall? I hope so.
    - Holy Cow! Kruk is going the Rizzuto route! Only home games for the Giants (Like Scooter Phil for the Yankees up to his last breath)
    - D Kuip's boredom - Nearly 5 decades in MLB, worn down, and of course, the inane Amy G isn't helping. If Baer gets into deeper trouble than usual with MLB, despite the SF courts letting him go, maybe Oracle Park fans will see relief and not have to run and hide from Amy G.
    - Me thinks the Dubs have something to do with Beil not returning to Hawaii. Otherwise, he may have been on the Islands long ago. Amazing what a historic NBA title run can do to a hybrid sports-newscaster. And as long as the Warriors' reign carries over across the Bay Bridge, Beil likely stays at KGO-TV for the time being.
    - Too many commercials and too many yentas (men & women, if you read RL's posts blasting the two morning shows). Except for the occasional high-level games within the Giants, Niners, and long ago, the Warriors, just haven't really listened to KNBR since Frank & Mike in the mid-1990s. And even then, too many ads!

  16. How many of you that comment on the Giants radio and/or TV broadcasters have listened to any other markets for an extended period of time? If you have, you have no clue on what top professionals we have in the Bay Area. Most of the play-by-play
and color people around the country belong in "Dump Truck" Iowa.
If you want great talent, you have to pay, and most of these clowns do not want to do it.

  17. Giants need Jeremy Affeldt in the booth with Flemming next year and give the chemistry time to build. Have John Miller work some of the home games, the way Lon did 10-15 years ago. BTW ... the KNBR Post-game wrap is frequently some of the best broadcasting -- concise and insightful. I'll watch it (on the DVR) when I don't have the time for the whole game. Doug Greenwald and Joe Ritzo should find their way to the broadcast team as well, though that's a lot of PBP.

  18. even joe cordell has more energy reading one of his stale divorce ad's then kuiper..jon miller once again telling the same dull anecdotes every year, espeically going to his first game in 1962 which he must have memorized word for word..you can always tell how the giants are doing by the topics they discuss..most of the time its a subject that has nothing to do with the ballgame..the entire giant broacast seem all sound bored and tired, they need fresh blood badly

  19. How is Reggie Aqui a "lout"? That's the last word I'd apply to him -- "bitch", maybe, or "catty". But I like him better than either of the women he's had to sit next to.

  20. "Frequent" stories from J Miller? No time for those any more due to continued sponsored segments from all of the Giants cash cows...best thing I heard from him all year was 25 straight minutes during Tolbert's drive time on Halloween afternoon after McCovey's passing. And not once did Jon start a sentence with "this story brought to you by"

  21. I like the laid back announcing style of guys like Jon Miller, Lon Simmons, Kuiper and Korach. Never cared for the amped up style of a Greg Papa or Bill King.
