What we have here for the most part: posers. I don't have to embellish you know the story. You both watch and listen every night even in declining numbers most of which is due to the relative lack of interesting people delivering your news, sports and weather.
The Bay Area used to be a hotbed for nationally-recognized journalists and the like. We had meat and potato personalities. Now we're reduced to tofu pie. What a disgrace.
*KCBS: more women street reporter because 477 isn't enough.
*KOIT: I'm suckered into the Christmas music like everyone else but it would be nice to have a live DJ every now and then. I know, I know, it ain't the old days.
*If all of you that bitch and moan over missing 415 Media for a week (while I was being screwed over by AT&T) and have the chutzpah to lecture me about why I didn't file from a Starbucks, were to actually contribute and become paid members, there'd be no pledge breaks.
*Greg Papa: greedy too. And a cheapskate too. Papa didn't even give a Christmas gift to his TV/Radio brethren. The Buffalo Boor strikes again.
*Leah Garchik of the Chronicle: any more Marin news?
*Michael Krasny of KQED Radio "Forum" show: if only a quarter of the people out there who listen to you, knew your dark side, they would not be fooled by your warm and fuzzy voice.
*Getting better and better and better --an elite broadcaster and play-by-play delight: Randy Hahn. Ditto Ted Robinson.
*Mandy update: pretty much what I expected: she's got issues. I always attract the weird and demented. She's a nice young woman with lofty expectations --I'm not in the mix nor want to be but we'll be friends. It's the story of my life. God forbid I couldn't meet some sarcastic middle-aged nurse from Pleasanton with some edge and reality.
Cheryl Hurd |
*The thing you should know about KTVU is that some of its most popular air talent have the innate ability to not let their personal life troubles affect their work on air and that's worthy of a compliment.
*Dan Ashley of KGO-TV: a valuable commodity that should be re-upped immediately.
*When Greg Papa becomes less likable then Bob Fitzgerald, then you know there's a problem.
*Total fraud: Jim Barnett.
*Cheryl Hurd of NBC Bay Area: she's not only really talented she's a total class act. A person that is as charming and beautiful off the air as she is on the air.
*I DON'T RAIL JUST TO RAIL: From time to time I get shit from people: "Why do you rip so much? It seems you have some personal vendetta --scores to settle?" My answer: everything these days is by definition, personal. Many of the people I rip get it; it's almost a form of flattery. They understand. Those that don't are amateurs. They should be lucky someone actually cares to write and cover their business. Funny story: I had one prominent anchor guy pissed at me because he was never ripped. True story. Don't take everything so seriously. Me too.
*Yeah, Frances Wang is not going to KPIX, sue me.
*The deal about my issues with Susan Leigh Taylor of KCBS is my deal with everyone else: if you lack sincerity and your reek of self-importance and think your crap doesn't stink, then I'm not impressed with you at all and will call you out. Sure, it's an opinion, we all have a right to have one.
*I'm glad many of you illustrated the obvious about Vern Glenn because I feel the same way. Vern is a good guy, very talented and funny and a terrific personality--his personality. I don't think he's consciously trying to be Gary Radnich but all the paper shuffling, the Garyisms so readily seen on air makes me wonder at times. Vern, two words: be yourself.
*On the other hand, a mean guy with no warmth and thinks he's a god: Dennis O'Donnell. Maybe he wants to be Greg Papa.
Damon Bruce |
*WHAT DRIVES ME CRAZY: the shit where a radio voice says, "...and this is my opinion..." Of course, it's YOUR OPINION! Why say it then? If it isn't your opinion, then who's is it? So annoying!...And the proliferation of interviews on radio with interviewee beginning each sentence with..."so..."DRIVES ME NUTS! I got your so right here!
*Papa thinks he's Ted Koppel doing sports when in actuality he's sort of a wooden Milt Kahn. Those of you with Bay Area roots know the latter name.
Pam Moore |
*The heart and soul of Circle7: Ashley and Michael Finney. Or to be more precise: KGO's co-MVP's.
*Pam Moore: soon to have an abundance of options, sort of. At KRON, you always want options. Otherwise you end up becoming Henry Tannenbaum.
*Add KRON: the doofus reporter who took a female friend to Grumpy's for lunch and let the whole place know he worked at KRON. Maybe he's related to Doug Sovern.
*God forbid KPIX made a bold move and seized upon Moore but the last time PIX had an ounce of energy and creativity, Wendy Tokuda was in the cafeteria eating vegetarian chow fun from Hunan.
*Allen Martin: you're no Doug Murphy. I knew Doug Murphy. Bring in Lloyd Bentsen.
Janelle Wang |
*NBC Bay Area in San Jose: the cost of too much mayo on wonder bread is taking its toll. Maybe you should add some substance to the news and quit trying to copy KTLA in LA because your air product is so, so bland.
*Bluster and fake outrage: Mark Ibanez.
*Rob Roth: show a pulse every now and then.
*Ronn Owens and Gavin Newsom: birds of a feather...
"When Greg Papa becomes less likable then Bob Fitzgerald, then you know there's a problem." - totally agree...
ReplyDelete"Total fraud: Jim Barnett." - totally disagree, please cite reasons why.
Agree. I've met Jim Barnett half a dozen times, most away from Oracle and the Warriors, and he has ALWAYS been friendly, personable, eager to talk to my daughters about their playing basketball and other activities. A real gentleman.
DeleteSame with me, I've met him 3-4 times and he always seems like a really nice guy, and not a "fraud" whatever that means.
Deletecheck kron report of mysterious light-joke was made about curry comments,he did say naliens on mmoon...knbr originally mentioned the ''aliens on moon'' comment which you notice has been deleted by all stories on curry's comments. that weird light is alien hologram to get attention probably out in space fairly distant as it was seen in los angeles too. light manipulation by other intelligence,
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if Bob Trebor is alive?
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Richie full of piss and vinegar. Way to rip on the free loaders. I still think you were locked up somewhere with that Mandy chick. I would love to wang that Janelle.
ReplyDeleteThe Sharks have two of the best broadcasters in the business with Randy Hahn and Dan Rusanowsky. Now if they'd just get Drew Remenda back . . .
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, and yes!
DeleteI saw Wendy Tokuda in the cafeteria that day. She was practicing her redundancies
DeleteDamon Bruce is doing 15-20 hours of week of radio, and every so often he's going to come up with a bit in his head that he believes in funny. Maybe he delivers, or maybe he doesn't, but to think he shouldn't do any bits when he's mostly speaking extemporaneously is absurd.
ReplyDeleteDamon has always been a fake He's as fake as the day is long
DeleteRich- Am I missing something? Why has your opinion changed so drastically regarding John Rothman?
ReplyDeleteI have always found him to be a very smart, informative man. I haven't listened to him in ages, but when I did tune into KGO he was one of my favorites (after so much talent was let go)
chip franklin, yes his show has got better since they only have one yenta instead of two or three which made it hard to follow..mikki medoro is still kinda of annoying.. and chip when he does talk politics or the news is listenable, has some interesting interviews too.. all the other shtick was bogging the show down..
ReplyDeletejanelle wang, the spawn of the
ReplyDelete"dragon lady", add also, the
"sze sze" fly
I worked at KGO in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Here's my list of the top ten hosts in terms of entertainment and listenability:
ReplyDelete1. Gene Burns
2. Jim Eason
3. Owen Spann
4. Jazzbeau Collins
5. Art Finley
6. Ronn Owens
7. Ray Taliafero
8. Russ Coughlin
9. Bob Trebor
10.Pete Wilson
Of course, Ira Blue and Les Crane were the founding fathers and are in a different category entirely.
Bob Trebor and Jazzbeaux Collins were comforting overnight voices in the 1970's and 80's. "I don't got to show you no stinkin' badges!"
DeleteI did notice that Michael Krasny sounded slightly hoarse on Thursday's Forum show.
ReplyDeleteYou couldn't be more right about Papa and Fitzgerald, and more wrong about Barnett.I met him in North Beach a few years ago and he couldn't have been nicer.
ReplyDeleteBruce is a complete phony.
Why so cryptic about Krasney and Baer?
In what way is Damon Bruce a phony in your opinion?
DeleteNot to sound like a Damon Bruce homer, and I'll admit I'm a fan of his show and like his work, but Damon Bruce is a good guy. The guy cares about his listeners and tries to center his show for the people. I think format wise, out of all the shows he's done here in the Bay Area, the show he used to do KNBR 1050 was probably the best, but he has a great thing currently in the 3-7 PM timeslot on 95.7.
ReplyDeleteNot to sound creepy but dang, Janelle Wang looks cute in that pic, wow! What guy wouldn't want to take a woman like that out on a nice date?
ReplyDelete
