KTVU Has Another 'Oh Crap' Moment This Time on Nia Wilson Murder; UPDATE: Picture of Victim Holding Gun Was No Gun; Somerville Says Sorry (Again) On Behalf of Station

Image result for ktvu nia wilson holding a gun
This photo of murder victim, Nia Wilson, made KTVU's air
YOU WOULD THINK THEY'D HAVE LEARNED BY NOW

How could KTVU let the photo of the stabbing victim, Nia Wilson, make it on the air? Its Noon News (that's a jinxed spot)

Incredible.

Indefensible too.

The suspect in the murder case has been apprehended.

KTVU has (more) explaining to do.

Again.

UPDATE: The picture of Nia Wilson appears to show her holding a gun; in fact, the photo is that of a cell phone case. It could be interpreted as an honest mistake by KTVU but given their 2013 Asiana Airlines fake names blunder, they should have been more careful. MUCH more careful.

*Anchor Frank Somerville once again had to apologize for the station.

  2. What is wrong with this picture of this woman exercising her right to bear arms. I wish she had a gun on her while that bastard was trying to stab her. There is NOTHING wrong with that picture, does this mean that a black person who owns a gun is bad? She was a good girl and not a criminal, she wanted to join the military. Guess what, in the military, they'll give her a gun. This is what this society has become, they want to put people in boxes and judge them bad because they like guns.

    1. She 18 and can’t legally own a gun, her Facebook/instagram page is full of gangbanging photos of her illegally holding and pointing guns.. KTVU has no reason to apologize to her family. The attack was random and had nothing to do with her race.

    2. Meanwhile BART police put out the photo of a black man with dreadlocks who is a suspect in the death of a man on BART just last week. Nowhere near the coverage this girls killer got. Oh wait, he was white, she was black. I guess its not as big when its the other way around...

    3. > Meanwhile BART police put out the photo of a black man
      > with dreadlocks who is a suspect...

Yeah, I'm waiting for all the angry demonstrations in the streets of Oakland over that one. Waiting...waiting...

    4. @Bintang I didn't see any pictures of her gangbanging, does she have a history of gang fights? What is her police record? Holding up signs doesn't make someone a gangbanger. Gangbangers get into GANG fights. But I don't expect stupid people to know there is a difference between those things.

    5. She can't own a gun at 18?

Would she be allowed into a swimming pool without adult supervision?

  3. Well, at least he tried to choke up, doesn't that count as "heartfelt, in the moment" journalism. Answer- no.

  4. Pretty pathetic apology by Somerville, and strange. Most people had no idea what he was talking about. Kind of like a child telling parents he pee'd in the back yard the day prior. If the cellphone had a handle like a gun, so be it.

  5. Word is...the family has "lawyered up" and has hired notoriously-aggressive legal Pit Bull Ai Su-Yu to go after KTVU.

    3. They have marches all the time against black on black violence and violence in general. If you morons did a little bit of research you would not say dumb stuff like "they don't demonstrate when a white guy is killed by a black guy".

  7. That was a publicly available photo of the victim...

Much ado about nothing. If the family wanted another photo used, they should have sent it. It's a nice picture of her, RIP.

  9. Do you think that being proud of a cell charger which is designed to look exactly like a weapon is an indication of character?

  11. First, KTVU showed "0" empathy to the family for even showing that photo. After the Asiana debacle they should have been doubly careful in what airs. Second, who cares if its a photo of a gun, she had a right to have one although KTVU showed bad taste in trying to vilify the victim, third don't buy that was a cell phone case. The gun next to her head has a barrel, the cell phone case does not, the handle on the case is much thinner than the object she's holding. Having said this it is all irrelevant. This young lady was the subject of a horrific crime. She should not be dragged into the mud for any legal photo that may have been taken in the past. KTVU showed insensitivity to the crime, the victim, the young lady's grieving family and that is unconscionable.

    1. She is not holding a gun next to her head. That IS a cell phone case.

  12. What is even worse than KTVU mistake, is that Brian Sussman and Katie, was speculating that perhaps she was a gang member since, according to those 2 dimwits (Brian and Katie) she was holding a gun in the picture on her face book page. Is anyone going to call them out? Are the going to apologize? Knowing them I think not. They also kept pursuing the story that the murder of Seth Rich being anything other than a random killing, was somehow connected to the Hilary campaign, long after that had been totally debunked. Hannity had to scale back because the family of Seth Rich was very upset and public about it. Sussman and Katie did not apparently feel a need to do that, since they are not national no one challenged them. I think I wrote something on Sussman's facebook page, but doubt it did any good, especially since I'm not a fan of their right wing agenda.

  13. A KTVU Editor and/or Producer had plenty of time to view that photo. They decided it was a gun, not a cell phone.

NOW, be a Police Officer and make that same judgement in a micro second. Their lives depend on it.

  14. The problem is that due to KTVU's current "Foxification," the victim who is Black, becomes suspect, and labeled a thug, who deserved to be killed?!...Just like how Trayon Martin was labeled a Thug who deserved to be murdered...Media Outlets need to stop going onto Murder Victim's FB Pages, & posting the most Damning Photos they can find of Young People!

It was a Dark day when FAUX NEWS took over our local KTVU News Outlet. Whomever posted the Photo of Nia Wilson with her Cell Phone on KTVU for a News Report, needs to be Fired...Immediately!!!

  16. The cellphone charger and the gun she is holding to her head are two completely different pieces of "equipment." The butt of the gun is much larger than the cellphone ch larger and the rest of it, I guess you'd call it the muzzle, is larger, too. Obviously she's familiar with gun use and is proud of showing it off. Maybe her parents should have monitored her Facebook use if they didn't want unflattering images of her circulated. She appears to be really amping her sexuality in the ones I saw and I'm really not surprised she's displaying her gun. I see nothing to apologize for by KTVU. In fact, the father should be embarrassed that his daughter is pandering like that at her age on Facebook without his knowledge, apparently.

  17. I didn’t see the original report. Was an explanation offered, like “she’s seen here posing with a cellphone charger that looks like a gun”? Without an explanation it’s a mistake, but it could be aired with some context. But I’m not sure how it tells the story about what happened on that BART train on Sunday night. The photo tells me something about her, however. Who would pose with something like that and post it on social media? It makes me think she was a hood or somebody who wanted to hang with that crowd. I’m not saying she deserved her fate, but it blows up the narrative that she was an innocent, sweet little girl.

  19. As a professional journalism of many years, in order for Frank or anyone else to identify that as a gun, they had the responsibility to determine if it were a gun, or they could have probably found another photo to portray her or left the commentary regarding the prop for the viewer to determine if that were the only photo. Frank, this is what they teach in Journalism 101: Jumping to conclusions. Sadly, there will probably be no repercussions and KTVU will continue making horrific blunders that have mired it in the cellar of Bay Area journalism, which wasn't always the case. Also, how muh did racism play into this false portrayal?

  20. am I the only one who sees a clip in her photo and not one in the cell phone case? I don't doubt that the case is something she owned but that is not what she is holding to her head, round handle case, square handle with clip slapped in her hand... She is the victim but don't insult our intelligence.

  21. Apparently, there will be an investigation as well as demonstrations. I hope no one else is hurt.
