Station MVP's; Ashley-Sze Winning Combo Amid Daetz Return; Watkowski Power Lover; Goodrich MVP at PIX; Ray Ratto Oy Vay; Aguirre Status; Wang Not Ready For Prime Time; Thursday Nuggets

Image result for MVPKGO-TV (ABC7) can't wait for co-anchor, Ama Daetz, to return from maternity leave; at least that's the perception but in truth, Daetz' absence has created unintentional positive consequences; Veteran Circle7 anchor, Dan Ashley is without a doubt, the MVP at 900 Front.

It is Ashley who conducts the orchestra and guides the ship; ironically, his pairing with Kristen Sze is a winning combo. Which means when Daetz comes back later this month, KGO has a dilemma.

*I'm sure it was just a coincidence that when they initially (the powers that be at ABC) had Tracey Watkowski on their list as the new GM, they held a meeting (based on this blog) and decided to take a look at Trixie's resume and past. "Why", they asked, is she so despised by almost the entire staff?" Power sometimes distorts reality. Watkowski likes to flaunt her superiority to make sure everyone knows who the boss is; she doesn't a but about image. That's fine but when your entire staff dreads you, maybe it time to look in the mirror and reflect.

Image result for dan ashley kristin sze kgo anchors*By the way, Sze is comfortable doing mornings and the 5 PM newscast with Ashely; she wants no part of the later evening including 11 because she has kids.

*I go extra time for Ashley who is the BEST and most hardest-working anchor in the market.

Why? Consistency. Always the same no matter what; cool and calm with just the right amount of emotion when the situation dictates.

Plus, anybody who anchors 5! shows a night, like Ashley frequently does, commands respect.

*Yeah, so Sze doesn't like to take crap and fights back when she'd screwed with (figuratively speaking); if she were a man, it wouldn't be a big deal. She's an Asian woman with news acumen and also, like Ashley, works hard. She's entitled to stand up to the female grunts who think she's a bitch.

*Yesterday's absence: dealing with life and its sometimes cruel twists. Be close to family and never taken anyone for granted.

*Over at PIX, they still don't have a face of station and their anchor placement is positively wacky.

Image result for juliette goodrich kpixTheir MVP, Juliette Goodrich, should be paired with Ken Bastida only Jules is perfectly content to do weekends but she has legitimate star power and is a delight to watch. Which only means DR will continue his TV dinners instead of using prime rib.

*I'm guessing NBC Bay Area will sign Jessica Aguirre eventually because who else could replace her?

Janelle Wang? Aru you kidding me? She's nothing but lightweight supreme and arrogant at that.

For what?

*Ray Ratto: still don't get it, yeah I know, he's such a wily curmudgeon. That'll draw in the younger demo.

Ratto thinks he's Jesus Crist too but he's more on par with John the Baptist.

*NBC Sports Bay Area isn't done cutting. Comcast is about to let loose with more pink slips galore.

*Program note: both John Rothmann and Pat Thurston will be on both Saturday (7-10 PM) and Sunday (4-7 PM) on KGO Radio.

*KCBS: news, traffic, commercials, sports, commercials, traffic, weather, commercials...a specialty.

*As I predicted the Marin hardware stores were inundated with TV/Radio reporters interviewing the managers and asking such pithy questions, like, "So, I guess you've been busy, what are they buying?"

Next, the usual stops to Tahoe and the ski resorts with abundant live shots off some dunce reporting from Blue Canyon while there's a blizzard.

Yeah, we have the rain back. Meanwhile the drought stories can be buried for the time being.

As I write this, there's a downpour like you've never witnessed taking place.

Bill Martin is giddy; Paul Deanno finally has the lead story.

Amazing what three storms can do for a drought.

  1. You nailed it re: Ray Ratto. Guy's a bore; acts like reporting on sports is akin to delivering hard news. Gimme a break. Comes off as arrogant, likes to use 'big words,' (hey Ray, many of us have a college degree, but don't use high falutin vocabulary to try to impress people) and although knowledgeable of the Bay Area Sports scene, his incessant verbal and written dissertations (<<big word/college word) are yawn-inducing. Find a couch somewhere and enjoy a bag of chips, some wings and have too many beers. Oh, wait, looks like you already do that.....

    1. Ratto is awful. Who is tipping rich off to the KGO schedule? Seems odd. Explain?

    2. Ray Ratto does have context, having commented on Bay Area sports for generations. That counts, even if big words don't always.

    3. He's fine writing but he absolutely stinks on the radio. He should be a guest at most. Or a Beat reporter or something. How did this guy become a Bay Area radio personality?!?!

    4. It was bad enough that Lee Hammer put him on at KNBR but then he got hired again at the game? Him and Tom were awful and once he was gone I thought he would be gone for good but now he's back again. Sounds like a guy who does not even like sports. Has he ever said anything interest or funny?

  5. Also annoying during winter storms... KTVU going to "Coop" for resort conditions. DUDE!!! Uh no.

    1. Also annoying at KPIX and not only in winter are the tweets Steve Paulson uses in his weather cast....WTF? I think Sal and Gasia need to put up their tweets as well since KTVU obviously embraces tweeting during its broadcast.

  6. bad jokes or off hand comments don't sound good when an interview is being replayed. you know the guy is going to say that bad joke.it drags an interview down. and when you tune into a sports show and theyre talking about some T- Shirt , you change back to another channel.

  7. Thank goodness, no more Dion Lim on weekdays. They should put Dion Lim on mornings instead replacing any anchor.

  8. Blue Canyon is a popular "live" spot--because it's the first location on the way back from Tahoe where the trucks can it the microwave towers.

The stations can go "live" from Tahoe with their SAT Trucks--but they're too expensive to operate and are pretty much used only for major breaking news.

  9. Janelle Wang over Kristen Sze anyday.
Dion Lim paired with any anchor at ABC7, is a great pairing.

    1. OMG that team would be scooped up (and I used the term "scooped up" for a reason) by an L.A. station in no time flat!

    2. Add the creepy guy from KRON doing the weather and you would have an all-star lineup. What's an inflections? I went to a small country school, we never studied big words.

  11. you don't get ratto because there's nothing to get. he's a one note guy and that note is sarcasm. it's all he's ever done. one after the other for 30+ years. he used to show up on the old alex bennet live 105 show and pollute those airwaves. some of the comics called him the 'human grinding halt alarm'. sarcasm-especially the smug and condescending type- isn't so funny if that's all you got. i've always thought he sees sports reporting as beneath his dignity. but he makes the dough so there you go...

  13. - TV Newsrooms run by fear: Great during the Van Amburg and Dennis Richmond eras, not so much today, unless you want more bland, often poor reporting. Teamwork is what it takes for stations to succeed.
That's why Dan Ashley is the best of the Bay news anchors. He knows his colleagues have to feel good about their job in order to do good work. May Ashley and Michael Finney continue to remind ABC HQ/Disney that Trixie is an ongoing mistake that must be removed.
    - DR will never get it as long CBS HQ lets PIX continue to flounder as far as overall quality goes. His removal is the only way that PIX will do more than take advantage of CBS' amazing network success, and raise themselves back to a more respectable. BTW, ol' Jules does enjoy weekend anchoring only while doing field reporting Monday thru Wednesday.
    - Let's get the Aguirre deal resolved!

  14. I think both Janelle Wang and Kristen Sze are great, a pleasure to watch. I believe in giving change a chance, as I have done with Dion Lim. Her on air persona both visually and vocally sucks!! ABC7 has shot themselves in the foot!

There is a very fine line between exercising your personal and political beliefs and shooting yourself in the foot! The mayor of Oakland has shot herself in the foot. She has self imposed a wound that will never heal, it will fester for her entire life, never to go away. Don't think so...Jane Hanoi Fonda, more than 50 years later her wound is still festering!

I have to give credit when credit is due, her timing was spot on perfect. The "theme" of the new Survivor program (KPIX5) last night was, "One bad decision will haunt you for the rest of your life." That it will!

    1. Nonsense, what Libby Schaaf did will be viewed as a big positive with the people that matter to her, the people of Oakland and the surrounding areas...after all, this is the Bay Area, not Alabama...she couldn't care less what Trump and ICE thinks, to the contrary it helps her politically to pick a fight with them.

Another moron who shot herself in the foot, Kathy Griffin, she seems to have disappeared from Planet Earth.

My all time favorite foot shooters, OJ Simpson and Kaepernick. They both had every thing the World had to offer at their finger tips and threw it all away!

I use to live in Oakland...Oakland deserves better!!

  21. Janelle Wang is a younger version of Kristen Sze. Both are very good and paired nicely with their respective co-anchors, Raj Mathai and Dan Ashley. Juliette Goodrich is also very good and refreshing on the weekends. I don’t think Liz Cook can be displaced during weekdays.

KCBS is the only news station in the Bay Area, but they can become complacent and lose listeners.

Walnut Creek is not representative of the East Bay, nor is Blue Canyon representative of the snow country. What I fine hilarious is that local news stations do live shots at all hours to give the viewers a since of authenticity. DonI I really Care if it is 31 degrees at 11:00 pm in Walnut Creek or the snow drifts are 10 feet tall making driving treacherous?

  22. From a colleague of mine in the business, KPIX doesn't care because they make their money from CBS programming and the people who work there use it as a resume builder and for them to brag that they work and live in San Francisco. It's disgusting but that's how it is.
