KTVU's '10 o'Clock News' Survives In Spite of Fox Turbulence

Related image IN SPITE OF INTENSE TURBULENCE; most of it not their faults, the CORE 4 (I'll call them) of KTVU's prized franchise remain to this day steady and determined if a bit belabored.

The still-vaunted "10 o'clock News" remains a ratings bonanza and still commands #1 status as the most-watched newscast in the Bay Area. It's been challenged but it remains the top dog.

Anchors Frank Somerville and Julie Haener are decades-crowned veterans. Mark Ibanez on sports is nearing 40 years in Jack London Square and continues his excellent repertoire with nifty writing and A-Grade delivery. His volume of service equals that of the late Gary Park; while I have had my issues with Bill Martin, overall, he does a better-than-average weather report. Sure, he's become excessively chatty but blame most of that on FOX's ethos.

The 10 has been tainted with too many new reporters and an obscene amount of semi-happy talk; it's overall coverage is still very good and the bulk of its product remains steady and intact; all of this in spite of Fox's rush to tweak it and make it a part of their brand. Only, the 10 o'clock didn't need any tweaking. Apparently, If it ain't broke don't fix it never entered the Fox lexicon.

I wish other newscasts on KTVU would try to emulate the 10 but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know why. It's all but unwatchable. The banter among Frank, Julie and Bill Martin is particularly painful (and trite). They'd rather yet them yammer on for five minutes than hire another writer and actually put more *news* on the news.

  2. I'm glad you didn't write the late "great" Gary Park. I couldn't stand that pompous ass. Mark Ibanez is superior in every way. Other sportscasters would be wise to observe and learn from him.

  3. Agreed. And as a non-related aside...is it me, or does Michael Krasny come off as a pompous a-hole? I was listening to him the other day and he came off as someone who has an extremely high opinion of himself. Oh well.

    1. You are correct, Michael Krasny does come off as a pompous a-hole. I imagine it's because he is.

  4. A Bestie Award to Debra Villalon for longevity and maintaining remarkable interesting and professional reporting for the number of years she has reported, and for consistently exceptional work over years to which others can only aspire.

  5. That black "professor" they have doing political analysis is one of the racist bigots that Oprah said the country would be better off when they were dead. He's biased, hates Trump and it reflects in his analysis, and he couldn't give an objective report if his life depended on it. He's completely worthless .... and apparently he teaches that manure he's pushing, and gets paid for it, too.

  8. Ditto 12:55 PM. She's in the same category as Amy Hollyfield. Top notch reporting and composed.

    1. Wouldn't be surprised if he read it as written...too bad; once upon a time anchors wrote and edited their own copy...
