Yes, inevitably there's always changes, especially when a new company like Entercom is about to take over CBS Radio and its stations, including KCBS. I've already written there's going to be uniform cuts across the board --just how much right now, I don't know but we should know before the end of the year.
For more background I did some casual internet research. I don't quite understand what was meant by "the CBS divestiture of all Radio assets". Entercom and CBS Radio is merging which means Entercom/CBS will need to divest a few stations to comply with the FCC. One source said one station had to go from the San Francisco area; another source said only one.
The four I found to be "for sale" are (currently Entercom-owned) KBLX-102.9, KOIT-96.5, KUFX-98,5, and (currently CBS Radio owned) KMVQ-99.7.
This still leaves KCBS-740, KFRC-106.9, KGMZ-95.7, KLLC-97.3, KRBQ-102.1, and KITS-105.3.
Who cares? Unlike Rich, I LIKE 95.7 The Game and listen daily to Damon Bruce. Sorry, Rich. My first radio station was KCBS but I rarely listen to Bay Area radio any more. Only 95.7 and occasionally to KCBS. I miss Bernie Ward. Too bad he was an asshole pedophile.
What happened to Elyce Kirchner on KNTV? She vanished from the air several months ago, continues to share NBC Bay Area posts on social media and has said she hopes to be back on air soon several times but still no sign.
I can tell a lot about the story by how they report the news. For example Mr. Trump vs President Trump. If there is a mass shooting if they show or don't show a picture of the shooter. No picture- white guy. Picture minority. If the shooter was Asian they call the shooter by the last name vs full name. My question is does the media have standards on how to report the name of the person? Asian Male from Sunnyvale
There is no uniform standard; some TV stations and networks have various style and there's nothing sinister about it but your remarks about mass shootings and pictures is pretty spot on.
9:54 You're kidding right? Mercury News and other local media are well known for if there's a major crime and it's a minority, no name. White perp...name listed.
Stations generally don't mention a suspects race unless they have enough details to make that relevant. You wouldn't say... a black male is suspected in the shooting... you would say a 20 to 25 year old black male thin build wearing an orange shirt. As for the President. The standard had always been to say in the first reference: President Trump... the always at least Mr. Trump. That has changed since President Obama when you often heard anchors say Obama and it is certainly even more common know when reporters/anchors simply say Trump on the second ref.
Frequently, in print media they will report "X said," when they have not yet introduced the reader to X and possibly never do. Likely the introduction was cut somewhere in editing, but it is really aggravating.
I don't necessarily think she's not credible now just irritating as all get go behind the anchor desk so reporting in the field might be good for her. Couldn't hurt.
L-2 in San Jose. What happened to Sandy Castelblanco's career and employment with KNTV? I see she's now married and doing real estate in San Diego area: https://www.facebook.com/sandy.bonaccorsi I thought she was doing the news just fine when she was on TV. There may have been an-employment-related civil suit as I recall against the TV station.
No, real estate is a natural stepping stone when you can't make in in TV News, didn't you know? ...OK, I haven't a clue about the status of Sandy Castelblanco's career but I'll bet someone out there knows.
I too am no fan of Ronn Owens, Gary Radnich or some of the other folks often criticized, by you and others, on this blog. That being said I trust that you can non-the-less cheer for their commercial success as it's all about one big radio/tv/journalist/blogger family. Disliked as they are by many, you included, Rich, join be in a big cheer wishing the very best of commercial success to Ronn, Gary and others!
A look at Cumulus' 3Q17 SEC filing indicate that Westwood One is their brightspot. It's all about making money (leave community service to NPR!), so why not just "pipe in" Westwood One products 24/7/365 on KGO. I loved the old KGO but times are changing.
10:40 AM makes sense, as Ghandi said, “Hate the sin, but love the sinner,”....bad programming (the Sin), but still wish them personal success (the Sinner).
Heard him on 95.7 this morning! Not sure if it's his new gig or not. He was on 10-12. I have a new go to spot. Even the morning show with Dibs is better than those chucle heads, that was so bad today caused me to change and found Ray.
Their website has been redone to a Warriors color theme and the on air button doesn't have anyone from 10-12.
No, they are each owned by two separate companies, it was just a device by KRON to save money and ABC/Disney to allow a new tenant into an available floor.
KGO Radio only occupied the southwest side of the floor. The major part of the 3rd floor was law firms. When KGO TV & Radio arrived in 1985, KGO_TV occupied the entire third floor(and the other two), while KGO-Radio moved in (first) to it's third floor digs. Old timers remember when Cap Cities bought ABC shortly after the move. The head of Cap Cities exited the elevator on the second floor, accompanied by various ABC execs, looked around the vast facility and uttered the portentous words, "what a waste!" Employees knew then that big changes were in the works.
Doubtful. Disney has toyed with the idea of selling all of their O&Os, as it is, and KRON is a shell of the station it once was. I'm surprised KRON even survived the spectrum auction.
What is average money these days for a run of the mill radio talk show host? I remember someone writing that when Karel filed BK, he didn't make squat, like $ 40k for 3 hrs day/5 days a week.
just a reminder that "scale" is a minimum-the floor. A personal services contract(PSC) is always negotiated for salaries above scale. with the exception of swing, weekend, and fill in hosts, most of the hosts on KGO would be negotiating PSCs.
None of that jibes with the info Rich posts re earnings. 170k or something like that for the chipster? Or beerman? I found it unbelievable at the time for these phony hacks and still do. I am not figuring in their voice over ad revenue. For one, I hit the channel change when I hear either one.
Hi Rich: 2 questions about KRON 1. Whatever happened to Tiffany McElroy of the morning show. KRON had quite a few grandiose promos on her over the summer introducing her but she has not been on the KRON morning news since late September. Did she already leave because she couldn't stand Daria & Aaron. 2. I still see Brittany Shipp doing weather. Wasn't she supposed to already leave KRON for a new job in Philadelphia? Keep up the great work Rich! Cary SF
First question last, Shipp is indeed going back to Philly, don't know when but it's done deal...as for Tiffany McElroy I can only assume some issues came up between her and the company and considering it's KRON, I'm not surprised.
She doesn't list KRON on her tweet bio and it was July 11th when she lasted posted a photo of her at kron. Where, she looks like the young love child of Darya and Pam Moore- the resemblance is amazing. Her and Darya in that photo have the exact same 'do too.
From L-2. Neda I. has just gotten married and, so far, seems to also have a presence in the San Diego area. I suspect there's more to life than a job at KPIX should they even offer a fuller-time gig. Best wishes to her, but she's welcome to be seen on my SF Bay Area tv screen should careers bring her this way.
Prime-time, $150K base +20% of ad sales for 15 hours a week? I don't know what you're smoking, but it must be some really good shit. Who wouldn't jump at that offer with someone that has to post as anonymous?
3:53 PM...of course MZ was aware of my name/resume, still no response. I have some wiggle room, 10 hours a week for $ 100K or maybe a little less (10% vs. 20%) of the ad revenue.
7:13am, not sure what's up with MZ. He claims to wash his radio loses with vitamin supplement money. Now he's seeking donations at; https://www.patreon.com/ksco. You'd think he'd die to run your spots! The station is cool and all, strange business model though.
ARRGH! I thought Fallon Smith left NBCSBA! She returned tonight! ARRGH AGAIN! Trying to hear from the real Steve Kerr and KD, and the insufferable voice returns! ARRRRRGH!

DeleteI've seen people complain about that in the paper's comments section as well.
DeleteStations generally don't mention a suspects race unless they have enough details to make that relevant. ReplyDeleteI don't necessarily think she's not credible now just irritating as all get go behind the anchor desk so reporting in the field might be good for her. Couldn't hurt.

ReplyDeleteWhy did KNBR fire Ray Woodson?
ReplyDeleteHe made too much money. Or at least he's more expensive then the two coke machines that replaced him.
ReplyDeleteHeard him on 95.7 this morning! Not sure if it's his new gig or not. He was on 10-12. I have a new go to spot. Even the morning show with Dibs is better than those chucle heads, that was so bad today caused me to change and found Ray.

Since KRON and KGO-TV are in the same facility, is it ever expected for them to merge?
ReplyDeleteNo, they are each owned by two separate companies, it was just a device by KRON to save money and ABC/Disney to allow a new tenant into an available floor.
DeleteWas that floor once occupied by Kgo Radio 81?
DeleteSure was, from 1984 thru 2011.
DeleteKGO Radio only occupied the southwest side of the floor. The major part of the 3rd floor was law firms. ReplyDeleteThat's about right; the pay isn't like it was in the old days; there's exceptions of course. Bigger the name, syndicated types make decent money.
Deletetop AFTRA scale at KGO is about $44 an hour.. so a host would be paid that for their time on air... exceptions of course for Ronn.
Deletejust a reminder that "scale" is a minimum-the floor. A personal services contract(PSC) is always negotiated for salaries above scale. with the exception of swing, weekend, and fill in hosts, most of the hosts on KGO would be negotiating PSCs.

DeleteIs Neda Iranpour already gone from KPIX? She is nowhere on their website.
ReplyDeleteGuess so.
DeleteRich, does kpix have a replacement set in stone for old Robbie? Neda started out taking over, but now we see Julie Watts, who I would prefer.
ReplyDeleteWatts only does the early AM weather as fill-in and is not interested in doing that gig fulltime, so the story goes.

DeleteFrom L-2 (11/16/17). Neda returned to KPIX weather this week.
DeleteLaura Garica Cannon has dropped the Cannon from who last name. Anything new to report there?
ReplyDeleteShe's divorced. He's (Brent) apparently doing some freelance video work...she's ..I dunno, but it's all weird.
DeleteNothing to report for now --I'll try to get more info soon and pass it on if there's something to report.
What is the status of KSCO SF?
ReplyDeleteStill on air...if you want more than that contact MZ@ksco.com and I'm sure he'll give you answers to anything your heart desires.
ReplyDeleteI've emailed him with no response. Looking for a prime time gig, 15 hours a week. $ 150K base, plus 20% of ad sales.
ReplyDeleteI emailed M.Z. also recently when I wanted to buy some ad time.

DeleteI've been waiting for an "Ask Lieberban" to ask this...
ReplyDeleteWhy no mentions of one of the best reporters in the Bay (Slowed down but still...)
Harry Harris? His dispatches are normally thorough and complete and he's been doing it for what? 55 some odd for the (nee) 'Trib?
Per her Facebook page, Neda Iranpour got married a few days ago, so I gather she is just on leave.
