More Damon: Damon Bruce (95.7 FM/The Game) talks in "bits"; there's no conversation, no simple dialogue, every thing spoken seems to sound rehearsed and planned. Damon isn't the only guy guilty of this; simple, direct speaking is almost considered an art. Nobody talks anymore; everything has to be a "bit" and there must be a sound "drop" because without a sound board the world will end.

Just once I would dearly love to listen to a guy (or gal) who has the ability to form a monologue that is devoid of sound effects and unnecessary pauses but I know that's asking a lot in today's byzantine radio world.

*KNBR and KGO dipped in the just-released October ratings; these are the 6+ Overall numbers that advertisers don't  use but they do reflect a pattern. KGO was helped by the 49ers; KNBR not so much, the Giants.

*I phoned Gary Radnich's private line to congratulate him on 25 years at KNBR; I may have issues with his style and I've needled him many times over the years but 25 years is 25 years and he deserves kudos, so there.

Image result for bert and ernie*Of course back when Raddy was starting out, KNBR had Pete Franklin and Scotty Ferrall; good, funny, talented people, as opposed to today's melba toast offerings of a late night Uber driver moonlighting as a talk host and another guy we're supposed to be impressed with because he used to play for the Giants. Oh, and a kid that sounds like he has rocks in his mouth. The password is "switch."

*New drinking game: count the number of times Burt and Ernie (Murph and Mac/KNBR) say "dude" in four hours, sip a beer after each utterance and you'll be out of it in a half an hour.

*One of the more irritating things about Chip Franklin (among many) is the guy's frequent claim "I know every comedian and they know me"; well, I know a lot of comics (I judged the SF Stand-Up Comedy Competition for years in the 80's and 90's) and most comics I know never heard of Franklin. Someone is lying; I'll side with the comics.

*Brian Copeland's "Headlines with the 'Headliners": slightly more interesting than doing a #2 at the Union 76 gas station bathroom at the West End of the Bay Bridge before Oakland. At 3 AM.

*Copeland is trying really hard; I mean really hard to be just like his buddy, Ronnnnn Owens. Brian is thinking about changing his name to "Briannnnnnn Copeland" and has called various nail salons on Union Street for dual manicure/pedicure with Ronnnnnnnnnnnnn.

*If Copie keep this up, he might as well be Ronn's Steadman.

*The "R&B Joke Show": slightly more interesting than a "Book Notes" rerun on CSPAN4.

*A former KGO Radio talk-host told me "you know what Ronn thinks is the most important thing in the world? Money." "Even more important than family?", I asked: "Yes sir." That's all you need to know about Ron Lowenstein.

*Ronn was in the North Beach Restaurant the other night channeling Lorenzo Petroni (the owner who died a few years ago); It was just like the old days; Ronn and his posse; the wine was flowing; the jokes; the pasta; oh and, every female brunette at the bar running outside for cover.

Image result for ben fong torres*You love reading this, don't you, because let's face it, you'll never, ever, see this in Ben Bland Torres' column in the Chronicle

Ben needs to write a few more "Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame" articles because you just can't have enough BARHOF posts in the Sunday Pink, right? Ben has become so boring he makes Leah Garchik look like Hunter S. Thompson.

*If KCBS' Jeffrey Schaub had his way, he'd positively kick the shit out of ex-KGO tonsil and seemingly everywhere and time, on the air, anchor, Jon Bristow.

Image result for Woman seduding her boss at bar*So, this new reporter chick at KPIX, (I won't use her name) has a lunch with the boss trying to impress him with her knowledge --"hey, you know, (she says) get me a couple of glasses of wine and I could be anything your heart desires!" He, (boss) thinks it over hard, but rightly figures that there's already one too many Harvey Weinsteins in the world.

*By the way, Kevin Spacey? I'm just shocked.

*In my early media days I was groped by a grouchy old waitress, "Edith", who worked the overnight shift at the Grubsteak. It was pretty awesome ,but damn, she was positively nutso!

  1. Congratulations GR for parking in Handicapped spaces with no placard. That's the best I can do.

  2. The Bay Area Radio Hall Of Fame acronym sounds like my reaction when I try to listen to KNBR in the morning.

  3. I loved when Pete Franklin was out here. Sadly it was near the end of his career, and when they made him pair off with Bobby Shitz, it was all over. Ferrall never really fit here and he's still not very good.

Very strange: Benny Fong-T- here's a local guy who has had a long career in local journalism and a long time Rolling Stone writer among many other facets...his writing should be fascinating with all that historical and personal background material. And yet none of that is conveyed to his readers...what a shame and waste.

  4. What are the requirements to get into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame? They can't be very high, because it seems as if they're randomly inducting anyone's who's ever been on the air for 5 minutes.

  5. Dill & Cleary were still at KNBR when the Bentley arrived. Would be very interested to hear what those two have to say about GR. It's more than generations that have changed at the Bay's highest area watt radio station. And not for the better.

  7. Whatever became of Harvey Steiman? I believe he and Peter B. Collins were kicked to the curb to make room for Radnich and Franklin(who both did 2-hour shows).Ranich hasn't been worth listening to since his show moved to mornings. On the other hand, Radnich throwing up would be a better listen than Steve McPartlin was.

  8. Spacey? Common knowledge he was gay for years. As for BF Torres, use to read him in the pink section. You're right Rich, boring. May have been his article where he mentioned you. Since then I've never looked back. Haven't read one article from him or the Rolling Rag mag either.

  10. Never did like Scotty Ferral . . . Pete Franklin was a legend though.

And add in Youkla references to the Dumb and Dumber Drinking Game and you'll be passed out in ten minutes. We get it, dude . . . you went to UCLA. Whatever.

    1. Or add to drinking game when someone talks over the other. Pass out time... Not to mention the fake laughter, add that.

  11. Some people like Scott Ferrall, and some don't. I haven't listened to him in years, but I know (and respect the fact) that he REALLY did his homework when he worked in this market. He could back that unique voice and delivery with some remarkable knowledge.

  12. I want to dip Rich's bald head in hot oil and rub it all over my body. He's that good. Signed, housewife from Marin.

  13. Never did like Ferrall...always sounded like he was calling a horse race through a Radio Shack walkie-talkie...

  14. Does Ferral still "pour a cold one"...complete with the pop-top opening of a can...and glug-glug-glug pouring?

I used to call in just to ask him to pour me a cold one.

BTW--his hockey knowledge is second to none.

  15. I try to listen to least one segment of chip franklin every day just to see all the bathroom and bowl movement references he makes and how utterly stupid his "ladies" sound and laugh at every dumbass comment he makes

  16. I have to correct you on Pete Franklin and Scott Ferrall. They were both terrible. Maybe too East Coast for West Coast sports radio, but it was an endurance test listening to both.
