Just What the Hell is going on at NBC Bay Area? Lack of Direction; Misguided Anchor Placement Makes For Dull KNTV; Tuesday Open

Related image What's going on at KNTV (NBC Bay Area) ? Nothing really, and that's the point. The NBC O and O that still hasn't decided whether it wants to be a Silicon Valley/San Jose stalwart ...or a SF-centro outlet with South Bay tentacles.

KNTV hasn't any idea and it shows.

This is a station that rests on its network laurels and that's about it.

For a TV News operation that has ultimate deep pockets, you would think its newscasts would show some depth. Not so in San Jose. Blasé anchors, mostly, who have all the substance of a Gilroy 7-11 doesn't cut it. KNTV has no soul, no mark, no identity. I'm almost about ready to call them, "KPIX South." Ouch.

KNTV needs direction, badly. Its News Director, former KGO assistant ND, Stephanie Adrouny's honeymoon is over. She's been rather tepid in her early, one-year-plus reign and there exists in the newsroom, a certain uneasiness that reeks of a lack of confidence in Adrouny's guidance. Whether that can change, no one knows for now. KNTV's ratings are just OK
for the most part and that has NY worried. KNTV, being a network partner, has a Winter Olympics to look forward to in 2018, but this year is different on that front so the prospect of a ratings buttress is not so dependable.

Anchors make up a good portion of a station's identity and KNTV has some star power, most notably, veteran news reader, Jessica Aguirre, although, curiously, you don't see many promos touting the still elegant and popular, anchor. Raj Mathai is a capable, mostly solid newsreader but he lacks presence and has become sort of sullen in his latter years since taking over seven years ago.

For my money, NBC Bay Area has one of the BEST anchors in the Bay Area horribly wasted on the weekend and that's former KGO tonsil, Terry McSweeney, who belongs on the weeknight, somewhere, maybe 5 PM where he'd be more valuable but I'm not a consultant.

Other anchors are highlighted and they're overrated. Earlier in her career, Janelle Wang, was a superstar in the making. She too is a former KGO talent but Wang's presence has greatly diminished and no one has any explanation. Maybe you can't just rely on looks and sit in the chair and read off the teleprompter. I like Wang but she's become sort of tepid and stale. She needs an energy boost fast and furious.

  1. Last I checked, the other guys (KRON & KGO) rarely do stories in SF-proper, either. ..and of course, KTVU does a lot of Oakland/East Bay stuff.

All four stations do venture in SF for big/breaking news stories. But as far as concentrating solely on local SF/peninsula stories, nobody does.

    1. If it bleeds, it leads.

The peninsula tends to have less riff raff and crime overall due to it primarily being Caucasian and Asian/Indian. Thus, less major stories.

The south Bay is a huge melting pot with lots of latinos. Alameda County by far has the most AA's and quite a few latinos. You can connect the dots.

My, my your Bigotry is Showing Bro...Might you be a part of the Trump Coalition??? Crime has NO Boundaries, & as a Native of the Bay Area I have seen Crime from Marin, Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Burlingame, San Carlos, San Mateo, Mtn. View, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, & Richmond, Antioch, Alameda...Stay Woke Bro!

    3. Redwood City, as well. North Fair Oaks is heavily Hispanic.

  2. She's having a hard time even handling the KNTV 11am news. In the last year, its been Scott McGrew with Kris Sanchez,Sam Brock with Kris Sanchez, and some guy so new I didn't even get his name...with Kris Sanchez.
At least Kris is the one like an anchor to the KNTV ship.

  3. Population of SF: 864,816
    Population of Oakland: 420,005
Population of San Jose: 1.025 million

Population of Alameda County: 1.638 million
Population of Santa Clara County: 1.918 million

The choice is simple. Oakland has been riding SF's coattails for decades and is a non-factor. Including outlying areas the South Bay is by far the most populous county in the area.

I believe its called "Suburban Sprawl." Everybody who grows up in the South Bay as a Kid, can't wait to get out of there, & to Move, or go Party in the City?!

I grew up in Santa Clara, where they roll up the sidewalks at 12:00 Midnight, so I know what I speak of...LOL?!

    2. Having grown up in the Santa Clara as well, I knew noone that was in a hurry to leave the South Bay. Only certain people of a certain disposition, I suppose. Most that live there are happy to stay.

  4. Maybe a new General Manager is just what NBC11 (KNTV) needs.

  5. I know you haven't gotten over NBC leaving KRON, but that occurred a generation ago. That was by some accounts a bad decision by previous owners. That's not KNTV's fault. Their people are just as capable as you find on the other stations, often more competent. McSweeney is okay, but he's not a star. In fact there are very few of them in this market.

Just like KGO Radio, the old days are gone. That station and others are different today than they were a few years back. Moaning about it, won't change it.

As for KNTVs 11am newscast, who's watching? 16 people? No ratings and no money in the midday for anyone. The cash comes in between 430am and 7am; again from 5-6pm, and to a lesser extent 11pm.

    1. Accurate, all of it. No, there are few stars today and most of them are old and soon to retire.

  6. I strongly disagree. Why do you have to be either SF or SJ? This is the Bay Area. The station covers the entire area. As for having so soul, no mark and no identify...are you kidding? NBC has a strong identity and mark, which is investigation. It rests its hat on this in everything it does from a marketing and promotion standpoint. The other stations are all over the place, KRON the most, KGO the least...7 is pretty consistent. As a casual observer I think it has had a pretty good direction focusing on its investigations. Now, given, those are only a small part of its newscast but boy, do they push it in everything they do. Given, I don't see them 'sell' the anchors that much, beyond the I-team. All told, I think you are off base on this one.

  7. KNTV is, and always will be, a San Jose station!

  8. As a South Bay resident I can't stand KNTV, I was a dedicated viewer back when they were an ABC affiliate, Doug and Maggie days.
I for the life of me can not figure if KNTV is a SF station or SJ. And it actually bothers me that they aren't proud to be San Jose's NBC.
As far as the talent goes I'm sold on ABC7 nightly news staff, the best of the Bay.

You took the words, & sentiments right outta my Mouth! The old ABC Affiliate with Doug, & Maggie was such an Excellent Fit for that Media Region! And I'm not a San Jose resident, but as one time SF resident I would watch them from time to time regularly.

Now its like the new NBC Affiliate in SJ suffers from a Dual Personality, & can not decide who it wants to be...San Francisco, or San Jose?! I have also noticed since becoming an NBC San Jose News Outlet, that they specifically recruit a lot of their Anchors, & Reporters from the San Francisco Regional News Outlets. Its really like KNTV wants to be a SF News Outlet, but they are located in San Jose?! If I had one wish, it would be for KRON to return to being the NBC Affiliate, and KNTV returning to be the SJ ABC Affiliate?!

This whole Ordeal reminds me sooo much of the SF 49ers moving to Santa Clara, & building a Stadium in the South Bay...But "Still" Calling themselves San Francisco?!

KNTV serves ALL the Bay Area well.

  11. Adrouny has no vision, no thoughts, no reason for being in top management, other than one: a sleek BMW. She's very material-oriented and motivated to get ahead but not to do good, but to do well. Which means she fits into the corporate mold like a starlet fits into Harvey Weinstein's silk bathrobe.

    1. That's why she was hired! New York runs this Titanic. She's an executive secretary with a car allowance. KNTV's iceberg is the money sucking investigative team. Its a loser. She knows that but couldn't stand her old boss at KGO Tracey "Trixie" Watkowski.

  14. I watch ABC7, NBC Bay Area and Fox2 for local news. NBC Bay Area has a decent newsroom. The anchors and reporters are competent and don't babble on live shots. I appreciate that they don't have promos like KTVU or KPIX or the absolute worst, the KGO morning newest team. The Bay Area has over 7 million residents NBC Bay Area is apropos.

Jessica and Raj are better than any team at KPIX, KRON or KTVU. KTVU suffers from rotating anchors. I agree that the Terry McSweeney is under utilized and he could be paired with Janelle Wang at 5:00 pm. Kris Sanchez does a decent job at 11:00 am and wonder why Scott McGrew and Sam Brock were removed, too. I must one of the sixteen who watch NBC Bay Area news at 11:00 am.

KGO is the premier newsroom with their team of reporters and anchors, but if Disney sells ABC, I suspect that the O &O will see changes like KTVU when Fox acquired the station. IMHO, NBC Bay Area is making a strong bid to be #2.

  16. KNTV and the South Bay...hmmm. A long time south bay grocery store (47 years) closes and upsets a south bay community (end of an era). Who does a two+ minute story---KTVU. KNTV--nothing.

  18. KNTV is located in North San Jose and claims to be the "bay area news station" which is a complete and total joke! Their background shows images of San Francisco and they only seem to cover news in San Francisco, Peninsula, North Bay and East bay but rarely any news in Silicon Valley.

I really miss the original KNTV days while they were just an independent "local" station along with KLIV 1590AM news that is now just a country music station.

There are no reliable news sources for the South Bay.
