WE'VE all been affected by weather this past weekend; real weather, for a change. Not some mundane, typical late Summer crap; the usual repertoire...this has been a crazy three days.
I've watched a lot of weather people.
I still trust Steve Paulson a lot on KTVU; Paulson gives me straight talk and doesn't try to inject weather minutiae into the mix, he's also very accurate too. When I say I trust him what I mean is it's all information that comes out that I know and can decipher. Paulson talks to people on the screen like he's talking a buddy over a beer. The common language is much better and impressive.
*I've really grown to like and respect KPIX chief weather guy, Paul Deanno; again, Deanno is quick and straight with the info and tells you what's coming and what's not. He was the only guy that gave an ultra-accurate forecast, saying correctly, Friday and Saturday would be miserably hot and that things would change on Sunday..."near the coast." Bingo. Deanno isn't in to jokes and dumb conversation which is a plus and gets right to the forecast. I like that. One of the few people I enjoy at PIX.
*One of the major reasons why I really love and respect KGO's Sandhya Patel is, A. she knows her weather and was major schooled for meteorology --it certainly shows. B. Like both Paulson and Deanno, her forecasts are pretty spot on and accurate...and yes, she's great to watch which I guess will piss off some of the buttheads who hate me for saying the obvious.
Patel is one of the few pretty faces who does indeed know her craft and isn't on the screen strictly for her appearance --a far cry from some of those who just rely on weather service data and want to show off their assets.
SUNDAY FOG...
Amazing how the heat even stunned the weather geeks; remember the days when they thought 80 was hot?...Sunday night at Geno&Carlo when a heat wave ends. Oh, where is Alfred when I need him...Speaking of which, I know this against the law, but too bad Tadich isn't open on Sunday...Alyana Gomez was acting very absurd on KTVU's 10 on Saturday night making Mark Tamayo look very annoyed...
In addition to Patel, Deanno & Paulsen, like you Rich I also love Lisa Argen. Unfortunately the only time lovely Lisa is on KGO TV is the early Saturday & Sunday morning news. I would love to see Lisa Argen replace the degenerate gambler(not being nasty but he does have a very serious gambling issue) & wine snob Spencer Christian who turned 70-years-old this summer & has seen his better days. Is it KGO's decision to have Lisa only work weekends or is she happy with this arrangement. Keep up the great work Rich!
ReplyDeleteto be a Ray Woodson you have to go like ''The Athletic''. a place for Ray?Go Ray!...
ReplyDeletePatel is okay, but Deanno talks like he is auditioning for a game show and Paulson always sounds like he wants to kill himself on camera. Rosemary and RoGo are the best.
ReplyDeleteHow do I break into TV weather like Sandhya Patel? That's been a life-long dream, but I just don't know how to start. Can you help with any advice?
ReplyDeleteI want some of Roberta's Anal Fog...
DeleteIt seems like Steve Paulson gets really irritated when he has to do the noon newscast.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Sandhya Patel seems to make weather forecasts more extreme (i.e., put rain in the forecast instead of no rain, adding higher temperatures to the forecast)
I remember when Paulson's career took off at KICU at the end of the Jan Hutchins Era. Deanno was especially spot on during the previous winter storm season. If Christian is past his prime, might as well give Patel the whole day; she has proven she can handle it.
ReplyDeleteYes, Argen deserves more air time. Orozco is consistent, and Tamayo doesn't suffer fools.
Other weathercasters - Gonzales and Martin both have shown that their off-air personal troubles - whatever they may be or may have been - have affected their work on TV & in Gonzales' case, radio as well. Criticism from the 415 blog is absolutely rooted in their respective poor stress management. Tuma is okay. Hackney does tend to wonder off topic too much (another frequent target here at 415). At KRON, does Karnow present his weathercast as if he was horribly shafted by people he once respected? Mayeda is okay, but I'm not familiar enough with KNTV's weather team to give an informed opinion. Same with the rest of KRON's crew.
Deanno also does weather updates in the evening on KCBS (740) and is reliable and very understandable.
ReplyDeleteWell it took KNTV four weeks to get around to doing it but they finally removed Peggy Bunker from their website...
ReplyDeleteWhere'd she go?
DeletePatel, Dave Spahr and Lawrence Karnow are solid meteorologists who venture beyond merely reading temps.
ReplyDeleteSteve Paulson is the best. But Rosemary Orozco is deeply hot . . .
ReplyDeleteSometimes Steve Paulson's voice can be annoying.
DeleteBrian "New Pat McCormick" Hackney and his gawddamn "thunder bumpers". Just add puppets.
ReplyDeleteI loved Pat McCormick! I miss him & Humphrey Hound & Charley Horse, though I like Brian Hackney a lot too. We seldom have any actual weather here, so I appreciate people who manage to make the reports interesting on some level -- buxom women don't appeal to me, but a sense of humor is always welcome.
DeleteDeanno is great on KCBS. He gets to the point, frames it the way the listener wants to hear it without all the meteorologist mumbo jumbo that most try to impress us with. He's greatly appreciated and spot on more times than not.
ReplyDeletePatel is the best, a beauty and a big waste reporting weather when she deserve a chance chance to be a main anchor. She did a fill-in once. The worse weather girl must be the ones from KRON 4 like the former Diane Tuazon.
ReplyDeleteI'd bang the bejesus out of Diane Tuazon!!!!
DeleteWe'll second the Steve Paulson nod.
ReplyDeleteNo stupid jokes (like a sportscaster at KRON) or political commentary, such as the global warming clown at KPIX, he gives you only the weather without being condescending.
In short, he respects the viewer.
I'll go with Paulson as well. And second place is anybody not named Jeff Ranieri. What an a-wipe...
ReplyDeleteCan't believe, Brittney Shipp didn't make the short list.
ReplyDeleteBrittney Shipp is stunning. It's the look in her eyes. She'll be gone before too long. She's too major for a dink outfit like KRON.
ReplyDeleteI love Patel! She's a solid weather guesser, and very easy on the eyes.
ReplyDeletePaulson is solid as a rock.
My favorite is LISA ARGEN, I just love watching her on a quiet Sunday morning, I almost can see her and I smoking a fatty and chilling out.love her!
@9:10
ReplyDeleteIt's obvious why she didn't. Looks and personality galore, but not quite in the league of others mentioned.
Patel, Paulson, Argen and Lawrence Karnow are really solid weather anchors.
ReplyDeletePatel?!?! That's a joke.
ReplyDeleteHire Me Not H1B!
