*Was Bill King ever on assignment? Only when Raiders/Warriors conflicted with baseball.
*Jon Miller has already taken more time off during the first half of the baseball season than Al Michaels did for the entire 1974 and '75 Giants' years.
"On Assignment?" Intended for the consumption of people/fans who are considered sheep and all too forgiving. In other words, Giants' fans.
*Vin Scully was never "on assignment" --only when he entered his late, late 80's did Scully only do home games well into his 70's Scully never missed road games.
*"On Assignment?" Since when did a misleading, outright lying, slogan become code words for BULLSHIT perpetrated by a team's announcers?
*Other team's broadcasters take a few days off--it's announced that 'such and such' is off today'"--the Giants make it into a Zapruder film mystery. Any way, we're all supposed to think it's cute. Ha Ha.
*Dave Flemming is eventually going to leave the Giants' booth and become a fulltime ESPN broadcaster doing baseball and college football and basketball. I'll bet you a cheeseburger at Grumpy's he'll never, ever, ever say Dan Schulman is "on assignment."
*Ernie Harwell did almost all the Tigers games. Screw this "on assignment."
*Monte Moore, Ken Korach,? They did full Oakland A's seasons.
*If the Dodgers' announcers employed an "On Assignment" gimmick, Giants fans and amen corner would go off full throttle mode on LA...as they should. A gimmick has no colors nor rivalry.
*Meanwhile, the Giants' season is definitely on assignment.
Ray Fosse has never been on assignment.
ReplyDeleteWhile I like the Giants, I rarely listen to the radio broadcasts, at least, until a successful season is nearing the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if he is taking time from the broadcasts, might there be a personal reason (health/other), that is keeping him away ... and, isn't any of our business?
Perfect post. To hell with all of you who have no idea what you're talking about (which accounts for a good chunk of you who've commented about previous posts on this subject). Baseball players rarely take days off. Same with athletes in other team sports. Announcers, until these prima donnas, are in the same boat. Days off come in the offseason. To those of you who think otherwise, go play Candy Crush Saga and watch more zombie movies. You have zero clue.
ReplyDeleteFor you to be that interested and upset about announcers taking a day off says quite a bit about the sad state of affairs that is your life.
DeleteI recently read that Dan Schulman is leaving Sunday night baseball. Come on in Phlegm.
ReplyDeleteWas Walt Harris ever on assignment during Roller Derby or Wrestling?
ReplyDeleteBobby "The Brain" Heenan kept managing for the better part of a year wearing a neck brace!
DeleteGood post.
DeleteNobody did it better from Kezar Pavilion than the one and only Walt Harris.
Kezar Pavilion, Golden Gate Park, in the City of San Francisco...
DeleteBill King used to skip Texas and Minnesota a lot
ReplyDeleteBill King especially hated the one American League Ball Park worse the Mausoleum Coliseum - the Trop, aka Tropicana Field in St Petersburg FL, so always skipped Tampa Bay after the first series he tried in 1998. King always hated the Metrodome, but the Trop was always right up there. Arlington might be because his Sausalito lifestyle off the field absolutely contrasted with the more meat and potatoes Metroplex. The hot dry air didn't help, either.
DeleteKIng also skipped interleague series in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh(the first time the A's played in those ballparks, when the interleague format was changed, and therefore, he would have been doing his first baseball broadcasts from there), because he said he'd seen enough of those cities while covering the Raiders.
DeleteI thought Rich only detested everything about the Giants when they were doing well. I was wrong.
ReplyDeleteWhen Bill King was "on assignment," he really WAS on assignment.
ReplyDeleteHe worked harder in one year than Jon Miller has in the past 10 years. Not to mention, he was 100 times the announcer that Miller is.
