Image result for TV Radio media column  CUMULUS SF Market MGR, Justin Wittmayer has told hosts who are disappointed with the line-up that "it's not about ratings--it's what we can sell..."

Huh? Are you kidding me. NO, he isn't.

A KGO insider told me directly that Wittmayer had a direct conversation with an unnamed KGO talk host.

The conversation was right to the point and direct: the albatross AM 810 station is not even trying to get ratings.

"They're just trying to sell lifestyle and books." Which might explain why on weekday nights in prime time if news breaks you'll be listening to a taped host talking about health and fitness. "News"? You want news and information? Go to KCBS or the Internet.

They already have, Justin. Here's proof.

*I TOLD YOU that KRON reporter, Averi Harper, had enough of the morning EP (harassment and bullying allegations)  and decided to RESIGN. Some of you thought I was a bit premature because you saw the lovely Ms. Harper on the air ...Harper gave her two-week notice recently and Friday is her last day.

Meanwhile, KRON's morning show has a diva issue not named Darya Folsom and the staff has plenty of issues with the "princess"--we'll delve into this subject matter in the coming days.

  1. That guy at KGone is a major league dumbass. How can you sell anything if no one is listening? Maybe you're selling dead air. If you want that, go to China on a hot and humid day. They've got it by ton there. If that's too far, go to India or Los Angeles when the mercury hits 100 degrees.

    1. Shitmayer came into my McDonald's wanting a refund on the hamburger he didn't eat 3 days ago. I said "Sir, this isn't Chateau De Gok. You get the hell out of here!!".

  2. Plenty of radio ad buys are not ratings based. Many stations don't even subscribe to a ratings service and use many other metrics to sell spots. It's still all just bull shitting the client into cutting a check...and signing a contract.

KGO just has crappy sales guys...and a bunch of crappy shows...so I guess it's moot.

  3. Rich, saw your tweet, I wish to remain anonymous but here is my story. I work overnights, which is a dreadful shift to begin with but what Cumulus is asking is not right. There is constant yelling and screaming at the end of the evening shift about what needs to be done for the next day. They lay out assignments that are virtually impossible to get accomplished. There have been threats if we don't do exactly what is said we will be terminated on the spot. We have seen managers take the best chairs right from employees desks and put them in their offices. There are constant discussions of pinching pennies. On the KGO side the discussion of infomercials in key dayparts is an ongoing discussion. And here is the worst part for the overnight shift, there have been rumors they want us to empty the trash and clean the hallway restrooms once everyone is gone. We watch the stock price and wonder how long are we all going to have a paycheck. Please help us! And please make sure this is from anonymous, none of us can be fired.

  5. Justin's problem is really just dumb. He's your typical out-of-town and out-of-touch right-leaning sales guy, who has no idea how to program a station, and who let Lee Hammer hire another moron who doesn't know how to program a station. I've been applying for jobs since New Years but unfortunately pigeon-holed myself staying in radio so long. It's god awful but I don't see any light at the end of this tunnel. When management and the employees are disconnected it's only a matter of time before everything falls apart. Justin will land in Sacramento or San Diego or Florida I'm sure.

  6. havent you pointed this out in the past? it isnt about ratings, its about coverage
the telecommunications act of 96 made sure that there would be no competition, and without competition, there is no need for ratings
and the fcc no longer cares if stations serve the local community. so we get the pablum they are selling
    its a joke

  9. Wow. I've been retired from the business for a couple of years, but I don't recall EVER hearing of any market manager or sales type saying that ratings weren't important in any market the size of Yuma, AZ or higher.
