Hi Rich, who will be the next SF Bay Area Newscaster to jump ship/leave?

    1. My best guess is Juliette Goodrich of KPIX...she's been getting offers from other stations but so far she's stayed put but KPIX doesn't use her right and she's not to be taken for granted. Watch this one.

  2. How successful are podcasts? It seems like there are no shortage of celebrities and pseudo-celebrities doing podcasts these days, but are they actually making money?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Very few if any...and even those celebrities who have podcasts have money -making ventures. People simply don't have to pay for something on the Internet...I know first hand.

  3. Why does KRON4 have so many commercials during the news broadcasts...much more than other stations.

    1. Just another KRON embarrassment ...maybe they run so many commercials to distract their product whatever that is these days because its certainly not news anymore.

  5. Good morning, Rich! Now that Jack Swanson has left KCBS, who is the news director?

    1. They're looking for one, I believe Jack is still around until further notice.

  6. Hey Rich, how much longer do you see Ethan and Chip dribbling on at 810 ? When will this madness stop??
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Chip has a contract, I don't know the terms...Ethan I don't know.

As for the madness? Only time will tell.

  7. Hi Rich,

Is there anyone in the bay area that has enough funds to buy KGO 810 and get it back to the old days?

Thanks for all you do for the bay area...

    1. Yeah, many. But I doubt Cumulus wants to sell. That's the problem.

And thanks for your kind words.

  8. Hey Rich, a few weeks ago, you mentioned the super-secret meetings of the BlackRock honchos coming from NY to KPIX. Anything happen from it that you know of?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The people from NY are meeting Monday. Let's wait and see what happens. Could be something, could be nothing at all but I believe the former.

      Delete
    2. Please let that something be the removal of Rosenheim. Both sides are clearly tuning out each other. Even slight improvement would happen should this Disgraceful Danno be dismissed, not to mention Goodrich would be treated better.

  9. Hi Rich,

Was wondering if Jack Hansen and Don Knapp are still with us.

    Thanks.

  10. Is George Rask permanent at KCBS or is he subbing long term for Mitch Thompson during the weekay midday?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mitch Thompson was part of the old sub-contractor that provided traffic for KCBS so he's out of the picture...Rask is the man for now. Remember, there's no such thing as "permanent" in the radio business.

      Delete
    2. Mitch still works for Total Traffic. KCBS decided to start there own in house service rather than use TTWN which still does traffic for dozens of northern California stations including KQED, Bloomberg and many others.

      Delete
    3. Anybody actually miss the worse voice in radio, Mitch Thompson? Not me. Sounded like my cats fighting!

  11. How does Bloomberg radio survive saw an overall rating of .1. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's Bloomberg money and Mr. Bloomberg has more than enough money to burn no matter how bad the ratings.

      Delete
    2. Actually, think of Bloomberg Radio as a network buy. Results matter over ratings. And if you combine the Bloomberg operated stations with the other stations that carry it long form. Then you throw in the stations that carry the just updates, I suspect Mr. Bloomberg has an excellent, efficient revenue national producer that delivers results and truly, a lifestyle targeted station and network. Then you throw the local revenue that will grow with the station cache. Of course, speaking as someone who has sold with and without ratings. It comes down to results. Spend some listening, it is pretty good radio for those interested and a very good brand extension.

How long is the Warriors contract with 95.7 The Game? It is possible for Tolbert get back on W's home game broadcasts?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the Dubs' contract is four years although I'm not 100% certain...I know Tolbert misses the Warriors gig; he had a real good time as color man with Tim Roye and his close friendship with Steve Kerr was especially evident--I know he'd love to be back, but the KNBR-Game conflict prevents Tolbert's placement. Sort of silly but it's an obstacle.

  13. Hey Rich, great blog.
What are the chances of liberal radio making a comeback locally? I know Air America bombed and so did Green960, which I really miss. But with the Orange Idiot in office, MSNBC ratings have shot up and there's a huge interest on exposing this clown, his shady family and incompetent cabinet.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think, for the moment, there's a chance for a "Liberal Radio" network simply because the economics are not there...First and foremost you have to have something/someone that is entertaining. "Air America" bombed for the most part because the hosts were boring and overly righteous. You can only take so much of Stephanie Miller and Al Franken. Times will eventually change but a more progressive radio will require better hosts and then the money will come. Just not now.

      Delete
    2. There is a progressive radio station. It's called 94.1 KPFA. But apparently it's too liberal for most liberals, so they never talk about it.

  14. Any update on the Anny Hong vs Robin Winston Drama?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, they still hate each other...Hong is the more professional and just does her job while Winston --who has some issues in her life--continues to look for conflict. This is not a nice thing and is headed for further hassle.

  15. Hey Rich, is it just me or does KFOG play like the same 30 songs over and over and over again?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I gave up on KFOG when Morey retired. It was never on my "must-listen" list but it had good music and interesting personalities ...sadly, it's just mush now in an FM terrestrial wasteland, thanks Cumulus.

  16. Hey Rich, Long time listener to the classic 810AM. Gene Burns was a hero of mine. If you ran 810AM, What would you do to make the station better? What type of new and old talent would you bring to the station?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well, the funny thing is I'd do a much better job than the current oafs but that's not saying much. I would program the "New KGO" as a retro radio station NOT predicated on "TSL" or "CUME"...rather a "unique" station that covets LOCAL, INTERESTING voices...people like Bob Sarlatte, Will Durst, John Rothmann, Bill Wattenburg, Ray Taliaferro, John Evans of KCBS would be my news guy along with Martin Lenz. I'd hire Melanie Morgan and Officer Vic as my morning show. Instant interest. There's so much more, you just gave me a topic to write and soon, I will.

      Delete
    2. I especially like the idea of using Melanie Morgan.
While you're imagining the Best of the West scenarios,
why not think of using Barbara Simpson too, if she's still wanting to do a show.

I miss the caller-host interactions, but about actual topics, not 'What used to be your favorite color of bathroom tissue before they all gave up and went to white?". Yellow or Powder Blue colored tissue is my answer, by the way.

  17. I am not from the Bay Area, but came across your blog when I was visiting the area at the beginning of the month. Great blog! Curious - how many Bay Area media personalities (those in camera and those on the mic) do you estimate read your postings?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Pretty much everyone ..I mean, that's what I hear and why? Because in the Bay Area, nobody covers media except me. It's not bragging in any way, it's just a fact.

      Delete
    2. Thanks. And I wouldn't considering it bragging. I asked the question and you gave the answer. Honesty - how refreshing.

  18. Jack Swanson is NOT still at KCBS. Jennifer Seelig is acting News Director. Just trying to help!

  19. Hey Rich,
I was looking back at your top salaries, and didnot see Pauly Mac on it, he could not make the same salry as Murph or maybe he does. By the way the morning team of the game I am really enjoying except when they talk about the A's.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Rich,

I like all your ideas for KGO except that morning show with Melanie Morgan. She's a right wing nut case and annoying as hell.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Totally agree. I'm about Rich's age and agree with him politically more times than not but am baffled why he's a huge Savage and Melanie Morgan fan. I can't listen to either one, too vile for my taste and don't find them entertaining.

      Delete
    2. Mostly agree about your assessment of Savage and Melanie, except when Melanie was on with Lee Rogers the KSFO was a lot better than the juvenile Sussmann and Katie Green, with all the weird noises and umpteen "I'll tell" you from Brian. I would add Brian Copeland, I like him better than Pat Thurston at times, with both of them it depends on the subject. What about Christine Kraft? Some of Rich's choices I'm not familiar with.

  21. JON MILLER STRIKES AGAIN ...

On Friday night Miller was broadcasting the Giants game and was relating the broadcast schedule for the weekend. He deliberately stated that Saturday's game was on KNBR ... never mentioning that FOX had the game on channel 2. This was an obvious attempt to deceive ... inferring that there was no TV coverage. So the question is who told him to do that? The Giants get a piece of the pie from FOX so I doubt it's them. Friday's game was on KNTV channel 11 so KNBR had no ax to grind. KNTV really has nothing to gain for people watching a Saturday afternoon game on another network. So what's the answer, Rich. Who's pulling the strings on this one?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not that it would matter the way the Giants are abysmally playing, not to mention that their tuned out hitting coach Hensley "Bam Bam" (more like "Blah Blah") Meulens had his contract extended two years (Oops!) and that Lockstep Larry will never let the inane Amy G go (a pathetic "superstition" excuse). Sounds like TV stations and their general managers and news directors. At least 2-3 NDs have no business being at their stations because of either tuning out or harassing employees.

      Delete
  22. joke of the week- ''the reason for the giants troubles is that they traded matt Duffy for MASON---Mc duffy!''. now back to giants replay.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Rich, the are one of the worst teams in baseball, so why is NBC Sports Bay Area running Giants replays?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Because they are cheap. Rerunning the game only makes them money fro the commercials. Actually, I like watching the repeats sometimes when nothing else is on and I havn't seen the game or my recording didn't work. But, it is kind of dumb to watchf the game and bingo, they immediately run the replay. It is creepy to drift off say in the 6th inning and wake up in the 2nd.....
