Hi Rich, do all the KTVU vacations at one time mean anything?

    1. If you're asking is it unusual for talent to take vacation at the same time it is NOT...preparing for May Sweeps so now's the time, Rusty.

    1. You call it "hate" --I call it unconditional love and respect.

  3. Rich, why is KTVU going for add an extra 30 minutes on their 10pm news? One hour is fine, an extra 30 minutes is overkill. Also, their 10pm news has been their staple for as long as I remember. It's just can't be for the upcoming May sweeps. I believe it's just FOX management who do not know the Bay Area market and reacting to their ratings. Why didn't they just look at the KTVU talent when they took over and give about 6 months to a year before making changes. But they had to make changes immediately by forcing veteran staff out and hiring new and cheaper staff and making unnecessary changes like extending the news to 11:30. I'm guessing that management will blame the staff for THEIR changes instead of blaming themselves for jumping the gun when they first took over. FOX management will create(and probably currently) a high turnover of on-air and behind the scenes employees at KTVU. That just sucks. Their's more than just looking at the bottom line(ratings) its the decisions you make that affect your bottom line and FOX management is not realizing that.

    1. Chris, it's all about the money. News makes money for local stations and since Fox owns KTVU they can get rid of the syndicated show and ad an extra 30 minutes of news...and make more money. Some people won't watch it but many will and thus, Fox will make extra dough or more than they were airing the syndicated show.

  4. Hi Rich, since the Raiders season ended in January I haven't seen Henry Wofford on CSN(Now NBC Sports Bay Area). Did Henry leave & where is he working now? I would like to see Henry replace the insufferable Gary Radnich clone Vern Glenn on KPIX. Keep up the great work Rich! Cary SF

  5. Hi Rich,

Why does KTVU News and others show both newscasters at the same time? Like when Mike Mibach sits there with a stupid look on his face while someone else is talking.

    1. It's a cross shot and is viewed as technique --they want both anchors in the camera I suppose to show that both care about the story. It's mostly BS like you point out but it's there for show.

      Delete
    2. I love when they use this technique because it usually an indication the anchors are talking to each other and a green light for me to use the MUTE button.

      Delete
    3. The viewers are sharp. They notice. Rich is right. It's a technique, that is practiced and often consultant-driven. Anchors observe themselves to see how they're relating to fellow team-members. Body language is tweaked and alterations are suggested. It's a combination of visual relief from 'serious news' 1-shots, and a signal to audience and talent that the news team listen to, and engage with one another. Does it make the product more relatable and watchable? That's up to you to answer.

  6. Funny, but I miss when the news was called "Action News Team". I think KSBW CH8 was the last to call themselves that.
You miss monikers for local news?

  7. It's been a few months now. Does KNBR realize that the John Lund experiment isn't working?

    ReplyDelete

    1. No, they just put him on because they think he's good. If you like ingrown toenails Lund is good.

    2. It was good hearing Ratto on the other day instead of Lund. They SHOULD bring Ratto back. I'm not expecting they will.

      Delete
    3. Lund is a horrible bore, does not appear his sports knowledge is anything more than a regular listener and Ratto, says one word or two and then hesitates and no sound for a few seconds. Neither one is the answer. I like the other Ray better.

  8. What has happened to Jim Kosimor at NBCSports? have not seen him just like Henry Wofford has disappeared.

  9. What is your reason for not posting certain comments, especially when said comments does not include crude, racist or otherwise offensive language or views, other than you might not agree with them. It is annoying, and I don't get it, especially since you ask for donations and I did donate. Wouldn't it serve you better to treat this blog more like a business, and not get so petty about your personal pet peeves. i.e. mostly hosts you don't like, but some of your readers might just find interesting enough to listen to.

    1. I'm the creator, writer, and I edit the blog...I also have to make decisions and some of them are not popular.

Thanks for your contribution to the blog; sorry I am unable to cater to all your wishes.

    2. Yes I understand your reasoning, at times I can be a little long winded, I then rewrite my response in a shorter version. However, there seem to be a certain pattern to my comments not getting posted. Like I said whenever I defend certain hosts, and critical of others. It just so happens it the hosts I defend you don't care for, or even detest, the other you seem to like. I don't expect you to cater to all my wishes, I'm a reasonable person.

  10. Can Dr. Bill be heard anywhere? His son is doing the Sunday night "Dr Bill Wattenberg show" show, but have not heard Dr Bill on it for a few years.

    1. Dr. Bill occasionally appears on the KSCO Saturday Special with Mike Zwerling but his regular show, he's largely not doing anymore. I'm sure if you go to his website he has archived shows or just go to YouTube.

  12. How much money does a Chip Franklin or Brian Copeland make, ballpark? I'm asking just so I can know how much more I should detest their programs.

    2. A LITTLE HIGH!?!?! Brian Copeland is not making more than $100k I would guess. The program director is making $75!

  13. How long after the Vegas move do you give Mark Davis to sell the Raiders ??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He's not going to sell --it's his life so he'll either sink or swim with the Raiders' life in Vegas which still has significant hurdles to overcome.

      Delete
    2. He sells as soon as his mom passes regardless of where the team is. As long as she's still alive the inheritance taxes don't fully kick in. Once she goes Uncle Sam will come calling, and when Uncle Sam calls he calls collect...

  15. Who is the girl on Ethen Bearman show? all she does is laugh and giggle, is she a co host? and why do they not take phone calls from caller's? Is Berman doing a Gil Gross style show?

    1. Whoever she is she's annoying as hell and pretty much inconsequential...so go have a beer and a shot and forget about her and her giggles.

    2. Ethan and Chip do not host talk shows, they let us listen to their inane conversations with the giggly ones. Such a ridiculous format. If their conversations were interesting and about significant topics, it wouldn't be so bad. At least Gil is smart and experienced.

    3. Ethan Bearman the phony liberal.
The guy was a full time conservative at KSFO.
But when you need the money, you will do and say anything.

  19. We talk a lot about the way too many commercial spots on KNBR, resulting in little time for actual content. Does radio have no 'cap' to the number of spots it can sell/air? For example, TV has 22 minutes of commercials for a 30 min show. (I assume that's an FCC mandate but could be wrong). Obviously, they are able to sell the time. Just wondering if there is anything that prevents them from doing even more? Mike/SF

    ReplyDelete
  20. Can KNBR sell even more time per hour (reducing programming) or is there an FCC cap in radio? FOr example, tv shows have 22 min of ads per 30 min show. Wasn't sure if radio had similar rules (if any) mandating how much time can be allotted to advertisements. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There was a cap in the old FCC days but since deregulation that's history ...allowing Cumulus whores like KNBR and KGO to sell as much time as they like...only thing is listeners are tuning out and flipping the channel...and advertisers know that.

  21. Hi Rich, when did the dumbing down of America begin and what role has local media played in the dumbing down? I know the onset of personal technology has something to do with it but what are the other contributing factors? Kathy/SF

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kathy, I will insist until the day I die that we became dumbed down due to the advent of technology enabling and even encouraging widespread narcissism and also due to having money so cheap for so long. That one factor alone has corrupted us like nothing neither I nor anyone I know has ever seen. The old guys from the real estate and insurance businesses back east would have recognized it right away, having gone through the boom of the twenties, bust of the thirties and fought the war in the forties. That's where I learned it.

  22. Mostly what you said, Kathy, smart phones, IPhones, PC's --about the time when newspapers began to die and human/people interaction faded. It's a generational thing and as bad as it is now I can hardly wait what holds for the future.

  24. Whats your take on Radnich's podium moved to the left- somebody between him and Moore always now and his shorter to the point, with (almost) no sponsors sportscast?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Somethings up. I notice no more Radnich and Grant Lodes as his sidekick anymore.
My guess? That cut in pay is also Radnich now doing less. Fine with Nexstar I bet. 5 minutes and out.
