Reporter Exodus at KTVU Because of Bottom Line Fox

First it was Ted Rowlands...wait, I forgot: Janine De La Vega too, who vanished from KTVU and is now at ABC7 (KGO-TV) ..Rowlands is headed to Chicago to apparently work in PR for a shoe company. Ouch!

Notice a trend? KTVU reporters are leaving the Oakland station in abundance. Some are the most tenured and talented too.

Why?

Because Fox-owned KTVU doesn't regard reporters as very important to the news platform, that's why. Therefore, most good reporters will leave and seek work elsewhere if they can get more money, or at least enough to make a living and garner respect. It's not just reporters but anchors too (see Rowlands) Fox simply won't pay other than those already under contract or those who will take the lean pickings because they love the Bay Area lifestyle and will work on the cheap. It works both way though: some can't afford the prices here and leave out of necessity.

  1. Are you sure they aren't just following the lead of the Raiders and leaving Oakland?

  2. And yet there are heavy six-figure salaries for the chosen few.
Is overpaying Sal or Frank really worth losing quality reporters?

    1. But, being the "most trusted" personality at the station, or penning those heartfelt Facebook posts must be worth something, right?

Never mind that, like Rich's "Weather Guessers," being the most trusted "Traffic Crier" mostly involves looking outside, making an obvious observation, and repeating it to the audience.

Management apparently believes that's added value only few can bring, and thus the most valuable asset to the station.

Seriously though, if your station's most valuable asset is a traffic reporter, the news operation has bigger problems, and driving away quality reporters probably _isn't_ the wisest course of action.

The first to succumb was print media, followed by radio. TV is inevitably going to face its day of reckoning, so if Sal, Frank or others want to milk it as long as it lasts, more power to them, I guess.

  3. Jeez...I hope Dave Clark goes away too...I have a feeling he would work for nothing and that's the problem...

  4. Janine isn't the best reporter anyway. No loss there.

  5. Anyone who knows anything knows that television "reporters" and news stations just regurgitate whatever was in the main newspapers that day. The real reporters work for the newspapers.

    1. What are these "news" and "newspapers" thing you speak of?
(Forgive me for asking...but I am a 24 years old techie here in the Silicon Valley. I spend so much time on my devices...and taking selfies...and monitoring my six-figure direct deposit paychecks...that I must have missed out on these concepts.)

    2. Hello 24 year old techie. Perhaps you'd be interested in renting one of my 3 properties. I'm a 48 year old newspaper reader who takes a good portion of your six-figure direct deposit paycheck every month with overinflated rents. Enjoy your time in the Bay Area, well miss you when you head back home in 3 years :).

    5. Look at the idiot at 12:45. He/she responded to a troll. Look at you being controlled by a puppet master. You're left dangling on strings.

    6. Look at the moron @2:30. I see dumb people. They're everywhere. They post like everyone else. They don't even know that they're dumb.

    7. That's not an online troll. The anger is visible. You can see the rage in his heart. It's almost like he's calling out for help.

    8. You're all idiots! Honestly, I wonder how you all even manage to feed yourselves. Or, do your moms do that for you?

Where was KPIX news tonight? They had a live feed of a plane crash running, but no news at 6 pm.

  6. Thanks for the update on Ms. De La Vega. As a channel-surfer, I didn't realize she'd changed employers. And as a street cop, I don't always look at the logos on their mics or jackets when I recognize the face. Now here's the topic for Rich L., which station do you recommend for M-F news between 0700-1000? KTVU w/Gasia or KRON w/Darya?

  7. Please do not let go Frank and Julie, if they do, I will never watch 10:00 news again.

You are sorely misinformed. Janine has South Bay sources that every station would die for.. she is a major loss for KTVU

  9. I wish they would get rid of that obnoxious morning loudmouth gasbag, Gasia. The woman can't even read. She speeds through copy like she's got to be somewhere. No cadence, she acts like an idiot, and I change the channel at 7:00 am.

  10. Someone's jealous of Gasia. Maybe their hubby ran away with a lookalike, or went back to being straight after zoning into her grande chichas!
