In response to the powerful storm that hit the Bay Area (and neighboring communities; Napa, Marin, Sonoma and Santa Cruz in particular) some stations brought in their weekday anchors and reporters.
Dan Ashley and Carolyn Tyler broadcast an expanded KGO ABC7 News program that went until 11 AM. Updates were sure to follow the rest of the day.
*KTVU News broke into regularly scheduled programming and weatherman, Bill Martin provided up to the minute storm reports with a concentrated watch at the rapidly flooding Napa River.
*The so-called "24-hour 'News Station', KRON, was broadcasting a taped, religion program featuring a preacher, Dr. Charles Stanley.
*KPIX ran CBS programming --the Pittsburgh-Miami NFL Playoff Game.
*NBC Bay Area (KNTV) went with a canned "Talk Stoop" --but at 11: 30 broke into programming.

I'm hearing that KGO's Ama Daetz will co-anchor with Eric Thomas on ABC7's Evening News Tonight (Sunday)

DeleteJeez, its just rain. It happens every year. KPIX had their guy up in Napa, finding ONE ROAD that had some water flowing across it. After 10 minutes of hoping something resembling news would be broadcast I flipped to CNN. Newsflash: if a normal condition that only effects the 8-10 people is the focus of their broadcast, then their news judgement is sorely lacking. Newsflash #2: just because its visual doesn't mean its important.

Delete5:16 That is precisely the point. This IS normal. It rains, some places are effected more than others-as they usually are. The people who live there know that. Look at the interviews for residents of the Russian River, San Lorenzo River, and the Napa River. They are nonplussed. To overload the coverage with breathless reports that some rural road has water flowing across it doesn't serve the vast majority of people in the area. "Tree falls across street in Piedmont-4 local residents temporarily lose access to their driveways until city crews arrive" is not worth 5-10 minutes of news coverage but that is exactly what I see over and over again. There is no proportion but there are visuals and visuals count more than information.

We are actually still in a drought.
The only record here is you drinking the cool aid too much and being fooled by tv stations using weather reporting as a substitute for actual news reporting.
Add the fact the population here is growing and moving closer to hazardous areas, such as near creeks that flood.
Moving to a location that has "known" flooding problems is not news.
I live in Napa and appreciated Mike Nicco'a street maps showing the flood areas,Ashley and Co did a,great job.

ReplyDeleteOne person died on Doolittle Dr in Oakland when a cab drove into the slough presumably due to weather. Three dumb kids in the Oakland Hills had to be rescued after they decided to surf down a raging creek. One tree fell over onto Highway 13 but didn't hit any cars. Oakland dodged a bullet. Maybe two inches instead of 3-4. A car on WB 580 lost control and crashed blocking the Lakeshore exit.
ReplyDeleteThe flooding is mostly Napa Marin Sonoma Santa Cruz Monterey Counties. I follow CHP on twitter and there were an unbelievable number of alerts about flooding and car accidents one after another.
This was not a normal storm but I get the too cool for school kids need to blow it off. These are the same people who drive around the barricades into two feet of water and have to be rescued. Or whine that nobody told them it was going to be a "big" storm and are totally unprepared. Take a seat please.

The stations had their "A-Teams" on during the weekend, and all seemed to do a good job.

Quite a few roads have flooded actually. It's not as bad as it would be in places like Texas but there is actual flooding.
ReplyDeleteI am a viewer (35-49 demo) and I disagree with many of the comments above. The storm is RELEVANT NEWS on a local level. The Bay Area hasn't seen this kind of event in years, so YEAH for many they are unprepared. This is exactly what local TV news should be to INFORM in events like this. For people that says "Its just rain" a big F.U! Did you notice the rivers/creeks levels? I recommend that more local news provide more information to their viewers, such as 1) Dont drive across flooded roads 2) Having ample supplies in the event of a prolonged blackout and etc. For the local TV stations its time to be an information resource, not an entertainer...

How come KPIX Veronica never fill in on the weekends when it comes to big headline news where all stations fill in one of the weekday anchors on weekends? Not too professional for the station and looks bad for the viewers.
