415 Media Observations from the Clinton-Trump Debate

Image result for The debate THE DAY AFTER

Let's begin by saying I DO NOT want political takes on who won last night --this is not a political forum, we talk and comment about 415 Media (and beyond too occasionally) I realize it's inevitable that politics enter the equation but let's keep it on message and TV/Radio thoughts.

*Lester Holt: Trying to be as unbiased as possible --I think Holt was tougher on Trump (as he should be) than Hillary. I don't think he was as bad as the right-wing echo machine made him out to be but I also thought he was slightly above average, not at all great in any way. He lost control early on and allowed the two to drone on without interruption. That can work well in some debates but not really well last night. This is a tough job and give Holt credit for making the most of a difficult situation. He passed the test but with some glaring issues.

*Locally, I watched KTVU's post election analysis with two of the most boring "political insiders"--they provided nothing new and their analysis were so extraordinarily average at best I didn't remember their names. One guy giggled a lot. That was the most compelling thing I witnessed.

*The Cable Networks--

A breath of fresh air (I can't believe this take) from, of all people, Judge Andrew Napolitano from of all places, Fox News who flat out said this: "She (Hillary) 'clobbered him!" I give this normally blowhard pundit a lot of credit for his take and not succumbing to Sean Hannity disease --in which no matter what, Trump can do no wrong. Not according to the judge --watch.

*CNN does a great job of mixing up its various roundtables and while some drive you crazy it's all for the most part, entertaining and compelling. I like and enjoy listening to Anderson Cooper and Van Jones. I'm not crazy about David Axelrod but he has interesting takes. Gloria Borger says the same thing over and over. Paul Begala is a Democratic operative but tells it like it is and will call out stupidity on both sides of the aisle. John King is good but can't stand his  wife, Dana Bash.

  1. I was really impressed with our local Joe Tuman on KTVU the past couple of days...He's a SFSU professor..He was so articulate. I think he's CNN material if he wanted to further himself in the area of political analysis and criticism. The only problem were the cringe worthy anchors Mibach and Gasia M..I always get nervous when they ask stupid questions..It's like they are not listening to to Joe!

  3. I'm sure the views you heard on KTVU were much more down the middle than the biased bullshit heard on 810 after the debate. I had never realized how many misinformed drones there are in the Bay Area; it's sad really.

I couldn't believe my ears when Pat Thurston connected Donald Trump's sniffling with the use of cocaine. To his credit Rothmann shot her down very fast after that comment while changing the subject. Cumulus can't tank fast enough. Make it Spanish language for all anyone in the Bay Area even cares anymore.

    4. Is that what Howard was on during his infamous speech?

"Not only are we going to New Hampshire, Tom Harkin, we're going to South Carolina and Oklahoma and Arizona and North Dakota and New Mexico, and we're going to California and Texas and New York … And we're going to South Dakota and Oregon and Washington and Michigan, and then we’re going to Washington, D.C., to take back the White House!! Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

Thank you Howard Dean for a decades worth of funny video clips, meme's and gif's all related to your speech.

    6. Do you know the real reason Howard Dean didn't end up becoming the nominee that year? Higher ups inside the party knew he could never carry Ohio and Florida...just as Hillary won't carry Ohio and Florida. She CAN'T.

Go back and look at Russert's coverage of election night in 2000. That'll explain it better than I ever could.

  4. CNN did a great job? That is laughable. What was even funnier was their "poll" on who won the debate. Time magazine had it 50/50ish, CNBC had a slight edge towards Donald, somewhere around 51/49 when I checked, a few other outlets were 50/50. CNN you ask? 67 Clinton/33 Trump.

That network is a complete joke at this point. Much like you reminisce back to the good old days of KGO I'm sure many do the same with CNN.

    2. Ummm...CNN's "Poll" was the undecided voters from Florida in a room. There were 20 of them. 18 thought she won.

Fox did a similar poll among their undecideds. 22 of them. 16 went for Clinton.

Polls on twitter, websites, etc, are pointless.

In 1999 Time Magazine did a poll of the most "INFLUENTIAL PERSON OF THE 20th Century." A guitarist named Trey Anastasio won because fans of his band flooded the site. In other words, those polls aren't at all scientific.

Any viewer of last night's debate by an undecided saw the clear differences in the two. One was a serious candidate; the other was a jackass.

  6. I too like the CNN roundtable. I like Axelrod because he was there and said the Obama camp knew within 10-12 minutes they'd lost the first debate to Romney because of Twitter. Before the debate, Holt said that the debate was to hear the candidates, warts and all, and didn't intercede more because of that. A few days ago, Trump was going on about Holt and left-wing media. Turns out Holt is a registered Republican. I think he was tougher on Trump, but Trump has sorta opened himself up for that. He should have asked Clinton tougher questions, in fairness. I'm a Democrat, by the way, and I think she got off a little easy. But maybe that's a credit to Holt being unbiased, personally, that he handled it the way he did.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You ask the candidates questions as they relate to who they are, what they have said, and what they have done.

Clinton was asked about the email server. How long can that go on for? Trump is the one who lied nearly 60 times in the debate according to fact checkers.

If it's hard on Trump, that's his own problem. It's his own behavior which both brought him to this stage, and is also his undoing.

      Delete
    2. Uh, didn't I write that, but Trump has sorta opened himself up for that." To be fair though, Clinton is very low on the believability scale in polls and there should have been more questions relating to that. But this is the problem I've had for supporters on both sides - both candidates say something in the media and their supporters fill in the gaps to validate their own choices for each. Just like you did with my original post - you conveniently forgot to include my critique against Trump to fill in your choice for Clinton.

  15. Hillary pointed out perfectly how Trump thinks. "He paid no income taxes" Trumps answer? "Its why I'm smart". Hillary decked him with.."That means he paid nothing for defense, nothing for schools, nothing for police" and etc, etc, etc.
That's it...that's whats the difference between the two. Hillary knows it take money- lots of it- to run the greatest country in the world. Trump thinks that he can build walls, moats, privet guards- and make YOU pay for it. Or Mexico.

I thought Lester should have said what I just said- pursued Trump who was so smug about being a tax cheat, tax welfare bum, running for President.

    4. Yeah, but saying gov't takes lots of money plays right into a conservative's hand and is the whole basis for small federal gov't. Republicans, rightly or wrongly, think states should handle the burden of those kinds of costs. Clinton could never say something like "Government programs take lots of money to fund." Game over for Republicans if she did. Taxes are different - it just depends who gets taxed what. That's a fair question to debate.

  21. Rich, you regularly rip on KGO and now I get it. The only immediate post-debate coverage for me was KGO, as NPR had already resumed regular programming. Although Pat Thurston and(I think it was) John Batchelor seem real likable, they totally whiffed on the debate coverage. Neither of them wanted to go out on a limb and call a possible winner. It took them 30 minutes to finally kinda sorta say that Hillary may have done a smidgeon better than Trump. Most the callers they took were disgruntled Bernie supporters, analysis not too helpful there. I guess they don't air callers without time delay as a caller was able to get through and plug LIVE 105 a la the way many Howard Stern listeners do. I just kept wondering if they even WATCHED the debate let alone form an opinion about it. Not the kind of talk radio I'd expect from the #5 Market.

    2. I seem to remember the same thing being said about Reagan's first showing in 1980. No minds are ever changed by the debates. They're all about solidifying the base and if Trump is said to be securely up in both Ohio and Florida, he's surely done that.

They're about style and if there had truly been a problem the other night the polls in swing states would be reflecting it. They are not and they will not. Ohio and Florida are NOT California!

    5. There are no post debate real polls out yet..the online ones never count.

    6. I'm not even talking about that. It's pretty damn bad when the Majority Leader to be of the Ohio Senate says she's a good loyal Democrat but with regard to Hillary? DEAD. NE Ohio is the most liberal part of that state and if they're not on board, forget it. Put the resources elsewhere...and that's precisely what the DNC has been doing for almost a month. Brit's a polite guy but even *he* brought it up last night, also showing the huge crowds Trump continues to draw in Florida.

The coasties aren't gonna be happy come January. It's damn near October and Hillary has basically zero momentum. She'll have the base Bill built for them once upon a time and that's it. If she hadn't been caught doing that to Bernie, this might not have happened.

Arnold palmer wasn't ''just a golfer'', he was a touchstone of American consciousness! meaning, you don't give a darn much about golf, but a lot of people may not ''know a fairway from a bunker'' , they still know that ''arnpld plamer is a golfer''. a touchstone of American consciousness, even if you don't know a caddy from a Cadillac. you don't even know a bogie from an eagle, but you know that''Arnold palmer,oh yeah, he's a golfer''.

    1. Arnold Palmer had an aviation career that was more financially and personally rewarding than playing golf ever was for him. Most people don't know Arnie set a 'round the world speed record in a Lear 36 in the mid seventies. He owned at least six Citations over the years and had considerable input into designing the Citation X. I'm partial to Gulfstream but if you've ever seen the new Citation sitting on the runway, it looks like a top fuel dragster with wings and gear on it.

Arnold Palmer was more than a golfer. Way more. Nicklaus used to fly as well (many of them did) but his health isn't the best. He owned a G450 at one time.

      Delete
    2. Palmer was also a master at designing, building and repairing clubs, which nowadays is left to the guys in the vans at Tour stops. The King was a real craftsman, and he had one of the most extensive and impressive classic golf club collections in the world.

I played golf in the '70s and '80s, and I still have the set of Arnold Palmer golf clubs that I used back then. Without a doubt, the sweetest irons I have ever hit were designed and build by Arnie's old company!

Just so you don't think this is partisan, there's also Tish Regan. I think she's been to four networks in ten years. She's got a resume as long as my arm but something tells me she's extremely bright but no one can get along with her. I'll bet she's really full of herself.

There's also Missy Francis. Was a child actress, drop dead gorgeous, Harvard grad, etc. Whew...I could run off with her. I'd do anything she told me to. She's married to an investment banker. Surprised? NOT.

America is one big business with about 330 million employees. I would rather have a very good businessman run the Country than a polished politician. We are living with what the polished politicians have provided for us.

That's why Obama won instead of a polished politician. That's why Trump won instead of another polished politician from the Republican party.

Both the Left in 2008 and the Right in 2016 have spoken, their words, America is tired of polished politicians and we want someone else to lead us!

Trump always wear the small pin of the American flag, Hillary never wears one. Trump should have asked Hillary why she still has a security clearance when she is over the top obvious not trustworthy.

    1. Hillary Clinton did not become a politician until 2000, when she first ran for public office. That's not thirty years ago, that's sixteen years ago. Obama and Hillary both had the same number of primary votes in 2008 (17 million) Neither had the number needed to get the nomination. The party decided that women could wait, but blacks couldn't. Nancy Pelosi and other party elites directed the superdelegates to vote accordingly. We got a great president in 2008 and he picked his former opponent as SOS. Donald Trump has made his dubious fortune screwing over little guys just like you. Did you think that someone who shits on a golden toilet was a "man of the people"? People who have to wear flags to tell you how patriotic they are, aren't.

She did a great job as SOS, the Middle East is on fire, I'm sure she will do a great job as president also. Sixty minutes Sunday...The King of Jordan said it is WW3 but America can't seem to figure it out!
