Kenny Stabler --Hall-of-Famer; The 'Immaculate Deception'; Bill King at the Mic; Bay Area Sports 415 Media Retro

The greatest Oakland Raider ever..."The Snake", Kenny Stabler,  Hall-of-Famer--will forever be remembered for this play, among others...they called it the "Holy Roller" --or my favorite, "The Immaculate Deception."

Enjoy this play-by-play description--a masterpiece, really, from the late, great, Bill King.

  1. Excellent!

From the NFL Films 1970 highlight film, the series of "miracle" finishes (most that featured George Blanda). Bill King's legendary calls, interjected with the great John Facenda's narration, are at...

    7:54-9:31, 10:09-11:55, 13:45-14:56, and 16:39-17:56:

    2. I started to record Bill King's Raider broadcasts starting in 1970. As I've converted them to digital and have listened to some of the great calls he made - it takes me back and makes me happy.

    3. Recording those broadcasts was a great move, 1:21. Hearing his calls (from old NFL Films pieces, YouTube, etc.) takes me back and makes me happy, too!

  3. I first read that as the "Immaculate Reception". I saw that one live and didn't want to see it again. Pete Banaszak, Phil Villapiano, Dave Casper. Back when Bay Area football was magical and Al Davis had all his faculties. (sigh)

  4. Just saw the Hall of Fame ceremonies for the Snake Ken Stabler. what a shame he was not alive to see his bust in Canton. BTW Rich just switched to 6 pm KTVU News & once again Julie Haener is on with Ross Padumbo. Certainly validates what you wrote earlier this week regarding Channel 2 moving anchors around. Julie never worked weekends & now she's on Saturdays for the 2nd straight weekend. Ken Wayne & Heather Holmes have been the regular KTVU weekend anchors for several years. Is it because of summer vacations or is this the start of major changes to Channel 2's anchor staff. Keep up the great work Rich!

  5. The Snake. Best play was against the Dolphins in '74 playoffs to win it 28-26.

    1. The Sea of Hands. Clarence Davis. I thought the Holy Roller was the most entertaining play.

  6. One sports league MUST induct the man that made "Holy Toledo" a permanent part of the American vocabulary into its Hall of Fame. There are three that should induct Bill King into the Hall.

  7. Wish Kenny and John were there. Without them, Snake's induction was so brief. And love or hate Eddie D, he did a nice job with his induction speech. I've heard that Eddie D could "push a few back" in his day, but he looked and sounded very sharp on Saturday Night.

  8. Boy was King the King, and Stabler was ALWAYS a Hall of Famer ever since he retired. Shame on the so called writers et al, who waited 30 years until he was gone to put him in.
I used to write to Ira Miller of the Sporting Green, this was 20 years ago, railing about Snake not being in the hall. He'd just say, well he doesn't have the stats, blah, blah. Pure rubbish. I still think there was concerted efforts by the NFL to not put Raider guys in the hall due to enmity for Al Davis.

    1. Didn't have the stats? He was league MVP one year and the fastest to 100 wins as a QB, better than only Johnny Unitas at the time. The only ones better are Bradshaw, Montana and Brady. That's hall of fame company in my book.

    2. Stabler was better than Bradshaw. Bradshaw didn't get his due as a great QB until the late '70s when Pittsburgh won their third and fourth Super Bowls, as a passing team. Bradshaw had struggled for years to shed his "big arm, big empty space between his ears" image.

Stabler was the best QB in the NFL between '74 to '76, and considered as such by most fans/'experts.' There was never a point in Bradshaw's career where he was considered the best QB. Even at his peak, Bradshaw wasn't held in the same esteem as Roger Staubach -- despite Terry's two SB wins over Dallas.

  9. Gene Upshaw, Tim Brown, Art Shell all "greater", and quite possibly Marcus and Otto.

    Stabler was great though.

    1. Kenny had talent and was an understudy by NFL standards, and when given the chance showed guts, like Tarkington in winning a game in the clutch under 'cool'. similar to Steve Young waiting in the wings.
Can't get better QB coach than Blanda. I blame Blanda.

  10. As a boy, my Dad ran the Ortho/Chevron plant in Richmond, other dads were head of the Chevron Long Wharf and Chevron Research or just worked there.
Chevron bought a block of bleacher seats and us kids had tickets galore. Look at the video that Mr. Anon posted above. Kids all over in the stands.
I was one of those kids ( for lousy games, the Dad's wanted the KC game and other 'hot' tickets no matter our begging ! ) Otherwise listening on the radio to Bill King while the TV was on was pure bliss.
Those days are gone, now it's glitz and glamour instead of grit and determination. Eff the NFL, except for the Hall of Fame.
    Stabler back to pass

  11. This just killing me. I was there. Now,I'm here and little Mark is like the illegitimate son of a John Fisher, Lew Wolff, sperm donation. "I want to move- so root for my team"..such an idiotic theme for any team.
The Raiders owned the bay area for two decades. No loyalty to fans.
And yes,Uncle Al did move the team himself. The old rotten wormy apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

  12. RIP Snake. Those bastards waited till he passed away although he had been eligible for years....worthless SOB's.
Meanwhile...eddie ( the convicted felon ) debartolo was goaded out from underneath the wet rock he calls home to accept his award??? Good old crooked ed,who had his team stripped from him for bribery charges out in Louisiana thus giving controll of his team to balke yorks. How'd that work out???

  14. Bill King, Tom Flores & Jim Plunkett (in that order) deserve to be in the Hall Of Fame.

    1. One would think that coaching and starring during two championship seasons would qualify them for Canton. Same goes for another Latino, who played for the Dolphins. Manny Fernandez, who was born and raised in the East Bay, dominated in Super Bowls VII and VIII (and many other games in his career).

    2. Agree on Flores for NFL HOF.

Disagree on Plunkett. He had a completion percentage of only 52.5%. He threw 164 touchdowns and 198 interceptions and was never selected to a Pro Bowl.

King should be in broadcasting HOF. Football doesn't have a media wing but if they did he would probably be there. He was great at Football, very good at basketball, I didn't enjoy his baseball work (present day comparison is Papa on baseball).

    3. 804 is so wrong..does he even know the football has two points?
Plunkett won 2 Super Bowls,He was Rookie of the Year,he..hey go look it up.
He is the only retired QB to win 2 Superbowls not in the HOF. Same as Flores is the only head coach not to be in with two SB winning rings.
Hmm,what else do Plunkett and Flores have in common?..

      Delete
    4. Stan, so Trent Dilfer and every other qb to win a super bowl should be in the hof? What hof qb has worse stats than Plunkett?
There are many players with 3+ rings. They all don't get in because of that.

    5. Stan, George Seifert is another coach with 2 Super Bowl wins not in the hall.
