415 Media Survey: Are You Watching the Olympics?

ARE YOU WATCHING THE OLYMPICS? If you ask NBC, everything is swell and happy although the ratings don't seem to indicate warm and fuzzy feelings.

NBC says don't measure the numbers as presented because so many people are watching the Rio Games on multiple platforms; Internet, mobile devices, streams, etc.

I've watched very little; the Opening Ceremony and pretty much nothing else because nothing else, frankly, interests me and I get the feeling I'm not the only one.

What about you? Tell me why you're watching or why not and if you're as indifferent as I am.

  1. I'm not watching any of it. It is scattered all over the channels and hard to find what is being shown and when. The results are posted online before the event is shown so no mystery as to who won. My wife is watching every minute.

    1. I'm hearing that the ratings for the first week were astonishingly low.

  2. I've only watched for a couple of hours, and those were minor sports. Didn't watch the opening ceremony.

I used to love the Olympics, but now I figure most of the top finishers are using some kind of PEDs. So the event has lost a lot of its credibility for me.

What I am absolutely avoiding right now is KNTV news. It's nothing but a commercial for the Olympics.

"...but now I figure most of the top finishers are using some kind of PEDs."

The stamina of certain swimmers able to medal in event after event after event without breaking much of a sweat or gasping for air is curious.

  3. Nope. I didn't even watch the open ceremonies. I watch teh news in the morning to see who won what. Not much drama there other then who is going to get sick from the water first and to see what color the pools will turn next. I'm waiting for the red tide to arrive. :-)

  4. Haven't watched at all really except once while flipping channels the US women's beach volleyball game was on so I stopped to admire their asses in those swimsuits for 5 minutes.

On a related note I'm so tired of hearing Radnich go on and on on multiple days about how great and wonderful the little black gymnast girl that looks like his wife is and how she'll be the breakout star after these Olympics and a national treasure. What an asshole. I had to laugh today while watching local news they had a story about how alot of the athletes have Tindr profiles so they can hook up and get laid while there. Who had a Tindr ad with half naked pictures? Gary's little angel. Too funny.

Gary's an "asshole" because he--like many Americans--is blown away by Simone Biles' accomplishments? The fact that you snidely referenced race and lied about her photos makes it clear that the real "asshole" is you.

      Delete
    2. @8:55 - Gary's an asshole because Gary is truly an asshole. You are what you are and Gary is one.

    3. @8:55
Lied about photos? I saw that news story as well. Trying knowing the facts before commenting, you will look like less of an idiot. Furthermore, take a poll of the majority of the readers here about the asshole comment.

    4. Birds of a feather, 10:28.
You probably got your "news story" from the same place you read about two-headed martians. "Trying" citing credible sources before backing up a liar (and with run-on sentences to boot).
      Idiot.

  5. Don't need to. All I have to do is watch Giants or A's games and CSN will be sure to spoil the results. During Tuesday's Giants-Marlins game they cut away to the CSN studio to report that the American women's gymnastics team won the gold -- before NBC's primetime coverage started for the night. Kinda dumb considering CSN is owned by NBC.

  6. I'm more concerned with making the 40-yard dash to the toilet in record time than watching the Olympics.

  7. I finally watched a little today the sprint bicycling indoors..that was pretty cool..so far the tennis and volleyball are a big snooze...BTW it looks like old Dave Clark is slowly being phased out by Mr. Mibach..looks like he now takes over for Dave at 7:30 am..Mibach leaves a lot to be desired but still way better than Clark

  8. waiting for winter games, don't care about summer games.BTW I am not a robot

  9. Not watching. The events I want to see are too hard to find. The schedule is all over the place, the tape-delays are inexcusable this day and age and track and field has been missing. I will not bow to NBC's hubris. Not only that, HBO's Real Sports did a brilliant breakdown of the wide-spread corruption of the IOC and the cities that bid/bribe their way to hosting the games. It's left a sour taste in my mouth. You can equate it to what Donald Trump has done to politics. Shameful stuff.

The ratings suggest I'm not alone.

      Ah, but swimming has...

    4. You equate the IOC's graft and politics to how Donald Trump conducts his business? Have you not been paying attention to the Clintons' foundation and the political favors that were able to be procured by those who "donated" to it? Trump is a bad business person, but if he's dealing in corruption he is really bad at it. Bill Clinton left the White House "nearly bankrupt" and is now worth hundreds of millions. That's not from entrepreneurship, that's from speaking fees paid by those looking to get political favors.

  10. Didn't watch the Opening Ceremonies; a first for me. Watched Vin Scully's call of a baseball game instead! But I have watched a few of the swimming, diving, and gymnastic events. I find some of the stories (Phelps, Ledecky, the Santa Rosa women swimmers, the gymnastic women) compelling. I'll watch a few more of the upcoming events, and the Closing Ceremonies (if there is nothing more interesting on the other channels).

NBC's coverage is OK. I miss the days when ABC covered the games, with Jim McKay gracing us with his Irish charm, and unique perspectives and delivery. I also think that ABC had a better presentation in general, in spite of the lower tech platform from which they had to work.

  11. I watched the Opening Ceremony live via BBC, so I didn't have to put up with Comcast's commercial-filled, deliberately delayed broadcast. On BBC, the opening video began at 4:00pm PDT, the entire ceremony lasted until 8:05pm PDT, a total of 4:05. NBC's commercial-filled coverage turned that same ceremony into a stop-n-start 4:36 event. Since then I have watched several key events, just have to double check the official Rio2016 schedule to know when to watch BBC (via free VPN), with no commercials.

  12. Positively, not. The Ollie's have had their day. Its resurrection in the late 19th century has about run its course.
Of course no more country's competing to prove who has the best government means its just huge, rich America is once again routing the rest of the world.
I call it groundhog day every 4 years. A new "America's darling" swimming or gymansting in really tight suits every four years.
It might be great for all involved checking account. That's about it.

  13. I could give a rat's ass. For the first time ever, I haven't watched a minute of the Olympics. Why? It could be because of the shameless self-promotion from NBC. It could be the corruption of the games by the IOC and the host cities. Or it's because the summer games are about as exciting as watching paint dry.

To be honest, all sports viewers are going to be suffering from burn out very soon. From January to December, there seems to be something always going on that's so-called "appointment TV" or "appointment viewing." It's too much. Maybe it's not for John Buck in Wyoming who doesn't have much to watch otherwise. But for people in the Bay Area, you've got the Warriors, Stanford, Cal, Giants, A's, Raiders, 49ers and even the Sharks. Like I said, you don't have to watch EVERYTHING. And it doesn't help when TV, radio and even the newspapers become shrills for what they're covering. Also social media keeps bombarding us with Tweets, FB posts, Instagram pix and so on. It just gets to be too noisy after awhile.

  14. My neighbour has a Canadian dish and able to see the games on CBC without the games being chopped up like on NBC.

As for myself, I hadn't watched them since the 80s when ABC had the games.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Nah, but to be fair, I don't watch spectator sports.

In fack, I am very pissed that the neeners-texas game is preempting CBS' 5pm news on Sunday.

(On KPIX tonight the Disney Dimbulb got wet just talking about sports in general. Bless her.)

  16. I hold the IOC in contempt. Long a blocker of any roller skating events, I shun most all of the coverage, and wish them ill. Can you spell money???

    ReplyDelete
  17. I look for a favored sport on the NBC schedule, which never leads me there. As long as they try making me watching everything, I will watch nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Only watched the opening ceremony so far. Just does not interest me since with push alerts you are up to date on the important stuff.

  19. I'm watching some women gymnastics, swimming, and fencing. Jessica Aguirre looks thrilled to be there!

  20. My wife watches a lot. In my hidey-hole I'll only watch if I've seen something interesting on her TV on the way to or from the kitchen. I did watch most of the female beach volleyball last night as the Swedish team had, as referenced on YouTube, "Anouk Verge-Depre the hottest volleyball beach player Río 2016 ..."
I'd seen Sweden play a couple days ago and Anouk is a hottie. Alas, Sweden was eliminated last night by U.S.A.

  21. Love 3:50's post, although my views are less about scattered coverage and more about the disgusting goings-on around Rio from corruption to contamination and the dislike. The severe lack of sanitation is too obvious and too disgusting, definitely affecting my normal Olympic viewing interests. Sadly, it's going to take more than Norway, France, and maybe another country or two to tell the IOC "You're Fired". We need a lot of countries to step and put the IOC back in their place. Most of its board members are very much too Trump-like in their set ways. The off-field events have definitely me turned me away from the TV.
BTW, Track & Field usually doesn't begin until after swimming is over. It's been that way forever, I think.

  22. I am watching the Olympics on multiple platforms. I read the calendar and have viewed sports not normally broadcast in real time such as equestrian events, judo, fencing, rugby, etc. It is nice to athletes from other nations compete besides the USA, Russia, Australia, etc.

  23. What! The Olympics are on ????

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, I've been watching. And thankfully, there's plenty of choices on different networks if one event isn't something I'm interested in. Though I've increasingly turned to NBCOlympics.com for livestream of the Olympic Broadcasting feed of the events instead of NBC's coverage.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Not very interested, it's boring (to me).

  27. Obviously in the minority, love the Olympics and can't get enough! My TiVo is recording so much same day action I can't keep up. Tonight I just discovered the live streaming and watched the USA thump Brazil in volleyball. And Track & Field (my favorite Olympic sport) hasn't even started yet. Rio has its share of warts but the competition so far, especially if you're an American fan and watching the swimming, has been terrific.

  28. Watching it every night and not enjoying how the games are edited pretty badly. It will be nice to see the LIVE events like the swimming that is on this evening during the daytime hours when it is LIVE. Also, catching the NBC late news, the first time I ever watch NBC 11 news straight 30 minutes. Shock to find out former KGO 7 reporters like Janelle Wang, Terry MCSweeny and Jessica Aguirre got promoted at that station.

  29. I watch all of it. Every four years gold...

  30. Yes. ..I think it depends on whether you like jock stuff or not. Phelps and Ledecky were amazing. Women's beach volley ball with our Cali women was good too. Just got done watching watching women's gymnastics. USA teams are doing well too.

    1. Roqui Theus failed to report an active Sigalert this morning. She probably doesn't even know what that is. Her comments are nothing more that reading the graphics on the maps, as bad as they are. Have you noticed that all their directions listing the travel time are pointing East on the maps. In contrast, Alexis Smith on channel 7 appears to be a good hire and a real pro!

  32. Hell yes I'm watching!
I've been watching the Summer/Winter Olympics since 1972. I LOVE the fact that there are now FIVE Olympic channels. As cool as the swimming and gymnastics have been...I can't wait until the Track stuff starts happening.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I could not care less about the Olympics, even though the best gymnast in the games lives just a few miles from me. I have only seen what is shown on the nightly news, and that's when I go to the kitchen....

    ReplyDelete
  34. Haven't watched a second and won't. I just don't care because two or three years from drug test results will come put and reveal multiple PED users

    ReplyDelete
  35. Nope..I was to darn buisy trying to determine how the juvenile and boring Chip Franklin got his most recent gig. He was able to answer some of my questions though when he stated that for the most part he just wings it while on the air-which really shows by the way. While talking with chip I discovered that I had missed the BB gun competition and soon lost all interest the Olympics. Ho-humm.

  36. I only watch snowboarding in the Winter Games so I can see Lindsay Jacobellis fall on her ass, which she does repeatedly.

  37. I am trying to watch, but I hate NBC more and more. Question: If it is a BIG DEAL that a lady of black heritage won a gold for the US, why the hell didnt they show the race? I like the races where there are surprise winners, regardless of country. Why does NBC think we only want to see US athletes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They did show Simon Manual's race several times and the award ceremony. Made big deal of the achievement. The coverage includes all countries and events. Surprised you did not know this. Oh yeah, you only try to watch the Olympics.

  38. Of course I watch the Olympics. Saying that you do not watch the Olympics is the same as the idiots who say they do not watch the Super Bowl, NOBODY CARES!

  39. Amen, Rich. I would rather watch the grass grow.

  40. Olympics = Boring stuff. Football, basketball, baseball is where the adrenaline is. Thanks for sharing.

  41. The Olympics are for pussies.

    ReplyDelete
  42. No. I'm not. In this instance, watching is so disconnected, fractured, it pales in comparison to, say, the 1976 Montreal telecast. ABC was at its peak and Jim McKay was master at creating a warm, engaging atmosphere. 40 years and massive technological advances later, Olympic games broadcasts don't hold a candle to their fore-runners.

  43. Where I live (hills of SF) I can't get Ch. 11. My brother-in-law has tried several times to tweak our antenna so I could get Ch. 11 & it never has worked. I'm not sure I'd watch NBC's coverage anyway, it always seems to be US-centric. It would be nice if they showed other countries' athletes winning events.
