THE DAY AFTER
Even if you're not a sports fan you couldn't help but notice the MAIN EVENT on Sunday was the NBA Finals Game 7 --the outcome wasn't swell for Bay Area basketball fans--but the drama and sheer magnitude of the goings-on at Oracle in Oakland dictated the domain on Father's Day no less.
*Among the high and lowlights of the Sporting King...
*The KNBR Radio play-by-play duo of Tim Roye and Tom Tolbert was about as perfect a broadcast as anyone can listen...although if, like me, you turned down the sound from the ABC broadcast and wanted to listen to Roye/Tolbert, there was an almost 8 second delay--the description on radio was ahead of the TV broadcast which was annoying...I went back and forth. Roye, who is terrific and not a homer, was just as exciting even though it was a Cleveland victory. Roye was especially great at the end noting it was the first Cleveland title in over 50 years --he didn't waver because the Warriors were on the short end of the stick...and Tolbert, who really has become an excellent color analyst broke down the game in a very concise manner even though you knew he was dismayed by the Warriors loss. Pros do that and Tolbert, comedy act and all, was at his best throughout and at the very end.
NOTES...A Game 7; maybe the biggest championship game in Bay Area Sports history and the Bentley guy at KRON didn't even show up in Oakland. He's got an excuse; he hosted the KRON sports show after the game. Predictably, Bentley guy was his usual insipid self with fake and phony "aw-shucks" "it's only a game" wise-guy comments. Radnich is so lazy it's amazing KRON needed to have his bod in the studio...fortunately, no one was watching...The KGO (ABC7) post-game show with Larry Beil and Adonal Foyle was just OK, nothing extraordinary, with the usual analysis and player/coach comments from the locker room...The ABC telecast was pretty decent --although Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy talk way too much for my taste...if they both got paid by the word, they'd have Lebron's money...speaking of which, was that "injured" Leron at the end a BIG FAKE or was I missing something? And big mouths Jackson and Van Gundy fell for it.
Tim Roye(and Roye/Tolbert) just superb. worked with Tim at KFBK , back in the stone ages.. He was superb then, too.
ReplyDeleteTardnich would take a dump & be a no-show at the toilet, he's that lazy. "Check the driveway." Hmph.
ReplyDeleteKRON's Carpenter -no kidding- had the camera swing over so we could see happy Cavaliers (stupid name for a team btw) fans celebrating in the Coloseum. WHO wanted to see that?
ReplyDeleteOh yeah- a Masochist like Radnich who of course roots not for laundry, but for LeBron, the Dodgers,Puig...So we all can hate Gary Radnich even more. He loves being hated.
"A Game 7; maybe the biggest championship game in Bay Area Sports history..."
ReplyDeletePossible...though Game 7 of the 1973 World Series was played at the Coliseum. Not as close as this game was, though...and of course, Super Bowl XIX was at Stanford with the 49ers involved (and almost the Raiders...)...but that game wasn't that close either...hmmm...maybe it was...

ReplyDelete"Cavaliers...Stupid name for a team btw?"
Not as stupid as "GOLDEN STATE" for a team's hometown/city.
Ha,well they ARE in the Golden State.
DeleteWhat does Cleveland have to do with either King Charles the 1st supporters in 1649 or a small breed of dog?
Anything?
The NBA got what it wanted.
ReplyDeleteYes they did. With the Draymond suspension and the suspect officiating, it was set up for 7 games.
Deleteroye can be annoyROYEing with his constant ''CURRY!!'' snoregasms. but Tolbert at least admires when other team plays well ,being a basketball fan-he doesent just root for warriors. but woodson shut down balty on show because he was ''yelling'',culture differences as ''balty'' is Italian and woodson the more reserved anglo American.''let timmy smoke'' and ''let balty yell''.
ReplyDeleteWas is it that the Bay Area sports media is enamored with Adonal Foyle. Ralph Barbeiri had a huge man-crush on him when he interviewed Adonal on KNBR. Adonal seems like a huge nice guy but he was a second rate player. He doesn't add anything significant in his comments.
ReplyDeleteRich, you hit the nail on the head with your take on the Tim Roye and Tom Tolbert broadcast.
ReplyDeleteWas listening to the game while on I-5 between Los Angeles and San Jose yesterday. Used to listen to Tom during the Razor and Mr. T days -- and knew he was hurting inside -- but teamed up with Tim to deliver an outstanding broadcast.
I'm from Pittsburgh and am a fan of the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. From a broadcast standpoint, though, I'm a fan of several of the Bay Area's sports broadcast teams. I didn't appreciate them that much until hearing some of the truly awful broadcasters calling games through SiriusXM.
There's a reason Tolbert was one of ESPN's national color analysts. He quit because he had a family - they wanted him back. It's why he only does home games on radio, but traveled for the playoffs and finals.
ReplyDeleteAll that said, I do feel for Gary, having to suffer the lameness that is JR Stone, who thinks he knows sports, but just blows hot air. His "live" reports from Oakland, hand on his hip, are invariably lame, offer no insight just cliche. Gives me the willies watching him think he's hot shit.
