A STUNT...If you really believe the whole Ronnnnnn deal was simply a response to "listener outcry", I have some terrific oceanfront property in Fresno to sell you.I don't believe it. I called it like it is, a STUNT.

"Last week, it was announced that Bay Area radio legend Ronn Owens, KGO 810 talk host for 40 years, would move to sister station 560 KSFO to host Afternoon Drive starting Monday, April 4, but after KGO listener outcry, the decision was made to keep Owens at his home station."
Isn't that dandy? You even went to extremes and cut a new promo on KSFO. Wow. You'll do anything, Cumulus, to fool the masses. And apparently, they bought it.
So, Ronn can have shitty ratings; Ronn is allowed to laugh and giggle "on his final hour on KGO" even as his new, fallen colleagues were marched out of the building --terminated, FIRED! ...Even that didn't keep RONNNNNNN from laughing and giggling: As he once told his engineer: "Hey, Fuck it, I'm here, we're not going anywhere."
That's the Ronnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn I know. Mr. Softie in action.
What a crock of crap.

Dr Bill was filling in for his son Eric on his own show last night. 3 hours of great radio like the old days. No BS, no politics to UFO's or stupid antics. He was fairly mild mannered. No mincing words though. Especially when asked by a caller about the Cumulus clowns. MZ called in to give his thoughts about Bay Area radio as well.

I listened too. It was a real treat. I listened to Dr Bill as a kid on Sunday nights. His talk put me to sleep and my mind was open. I am not oppose to the new generation, but only if they were like the old...with worldly thinking, respect, understanding and wisdom.

When I first heard those promos this morning, it became obvious that they were not cut subsequent to the announcement of the firing, which means that Ronn Owens ought to be ashamed of himself. Not a loyal man to his colleagues or his listeners and frankly I never though he was a man of dignity.
ReplyDelete12:26: How was it "obvious"? Owens could have recorded that voicetrack anytime Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. All he needed was a script (which Cumulus provided) and a microphone (ditto).

DeleteListen closely the way KGO is running those voiceovers this morning, and notice how similarly written they are, the style, the tone, the tempo, and do not tell me that they were not well planned days if not weeks ago - There was so 3pm-6pm slot at KSFO because Mark Levin would never have approved it - all a scam to insult the intelligence of people who will not wake up to the fact that media organizations in this country are doing you harm.

From the discussion, he is given almost God-like status. I never listened to him. He seems like so many other talk show hosts who are so full of themselves. Even more so, when they get old. What's the big deal about Ronn ?

ReplyDeleteSince Cumulus has little, if any, marketing budget, the entire episode at KGO/KFOG smells like a free publicity campaign. It follows the axiom that "all press is good press." Unfortunately, I believe that this stunt will backfire. Sure, they're getting a lot of free publicity right now, but when people tune in to the "new" KGO tomorrow, the content better damn be amazing.
ReplyDeleteAnd then there's KFOG with three weeks of "cume cleansing" running promos between every song that "The Evolution is Coming 4/20." Gimme a frickin' break. If there was ever an evolved radio station, it was KFOG before Cumulus started screwing with it. In three weeks, they'll have to start building from the ground up, something very difficult in today's climate.
Before we move on, looks like the deal was finalized on Friday, not over the weekend.

I USED to be a KGO listener, before the last KGO bloodbath. Then I quit 810 and (thankfully)found Armstrong and Getty. I can tolerate Ronn, at least back when I listened to KGO. I will give him a try if I listen at that hour.
ReplyDeleteKKSF 910 has been shuffling its shows over the last few years, and not really for the better. The afternoons get dumber and dumber. The "doghouse" is a joke, a millennial set of Sophomoric MORONS who wouldn't know intelligent discussion if it hit them in the face. They just laugh and mug into the microphone. Its like listening to friends at a bar, after they have had way to much to drink.
So back to KGO for A&G..... at least they have the wattage to cover the area..... But I doubt I will stay for anyone else (except Gil Gross).
And yes, I am a Boomer.... and want to experience grown up people discuss issues.... intelligently. Let the morons indulge themselves in twitter and facebook, and leave talk radio for the adults.
Perfectly said, 4:18 pm. Especially your last paragraph. Real talk radio allows for an exchange between the host and the listening audience. One can actually learn! Yeah... social media... yet there is nothing social about it (at least in grown-up terms).

The Trash A&G from 6 - 10...followed by Ronn the traitor from 10 to noon...from then on, lost...sounded like Copie...? from noon to ? Then was it Chip from maybe 3 to 7...followed by the Dregs? And then I guess whoever else? The guy that's been on Sunday mornings? Did Brett Burkhart get canned? Oh well, nothing, nothing, nothing good to say about any of it. And, what happens on the weekend..."sold" programs and then hours of the terrible chef?

Poor old Ronn is slowing down. No reason why he called in sick on Wednesday. Sounds like Mr. Grouch. Always name dropping (Chris is a personal friend). Ethan Bearman has a lot more energy.
