KRON weekend meteorologist Brian Van Aken is going from the outhouse to the penthouse.
I've learned through a reliable station source that Van Aken is leaving KRON to join NBC and the "Today Show." Van Aken gave his two-week notice to station brass on Monday.
Although the chance to join the network on a legacy show was an obvious attraction, I'm told by sources that Van Aken was miffed to not be considered for the main gig (weeknights) recently hired, Brittney Shipp, now holds.
The source: "He knew he didn't have a chance when he saw all the women being interviewed."
Van Aken's position at the Today Show will consist of some on-air duty and mostly producing graphics for Today veteran, Al Roker.

Good for Brian! He's been a KRON weekend weather anchor for over a decade & he's been subjected to the verbal abuse of Fatnich whenever he substituted during the week.
ReplyDeleteHeck ya . radnich is a pain in da ass. And they are affiliated with CNN. IS OWNED BY THAT LAME TED TURNER.
DeleteHooray! Get out while you can! Everything happens for a reason. KRON4 is a bad place. Vile.
ReplyDelete1: I had no idea who he was. Props for a 2 week notice, would his bosses have given him the same courtesy?
ReplyDelete2: Good for him getting out while the getting was good.
Scuse me, I was busy pickin the corn out of my drawers...what did you say about Clay Aiken?
ReplyDeleteThis is a first. A weather MAN is leaving KRON. It goes to show that you don't be attractive and have big cans to get out of KRON.
ReplyDeleteHe's got that generic Midwest look that often seems desirable in national network situations. I always thought he looked like the guy that did Comcast commercials for a time.
ReplyDeleteBetter to leave KRON when it's clear that it's just a stepping-stone in your career. Employers may excuse it was a stepping-stone if you're there a short time, otherwise it looks like you took a wrong turn.
Hmph...I can hear it now...Al Roker saying, "Aiken, Get me a fucken hot link, goddamit!!!" Fucken LardASS!!!
ReplyDeleteNo no no it's, "AIKEN...WHERE'S MY SLIM FAST SHAKE??!!"
DeleteLots of producing for Al which means building graphics but that's what he does best so kudos to Brian. Hope he gets occasional on-air work too. Good guy.
ReplyDeleteDoes KRON even have a primary weather "Anchor"? I just see them as having a hodge-podge of people doing the weather. I think the last person that I felt was a KRON weather "Anchor" was Lisa Argen and she's now at KGO.
ReplyDeleteWas at a party with him when he worked in Redding. Helped him do a keg stand and his shoe got whacked by the ceiling fan. Good sport.
ReplyDeleteDamn! The adult supervision is dwindling in Bay Area media.
ReplyDeleteBrian is smart and talented and was utterly underused and ignored by mgmt at KRON, Good for hin.
ReplyDeleteHere's Mark Thompson's chance to return to the 'hood.
ReplyDeleteGreat news for BVA! What a fun, talented, and knowledgable meteorologist to work with! Best wishes!
ReplyDeleteI thought his weather reports were among the clearest and most reliable in the San Francisco Bay area -- certainly the best weather person on KRON, Channel 4. I'm glad he's being recognized and advancing, but I'll miss him.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great meteorologist! Will miss you. Wish you all the best in your new job. KRON will never have another meteorologist like you and they will live to regret it. I will discontinue watching KRON.
I'm happy for Mr. Van Aken & wish him luck. Kron made a bad decision not giving him the full-time job over B. Shipp. There's nothing special about her doing the weather; not even close to him. At least he gave the news every once in a while. I figure she was hired to appeal to a certain audience, like nasaly & annoying V. De La Cruz on KPIX. She needs to do something about her wardrobe. Seems all her dresses are the same cut/style except different colors.
ReplyDeleteI see a lot of excellence at KRON hopefully management appreciates the on air folks as much as we do! There's no need for anybody in management who can't appreciate the fantastic people.
ReplyDeleteI loved Brian Van Aken. I thought he was the best, clearest and most knowledgeable of the meteorologists. I can't stand all these fluffy weather ladies that are only hired for their tight dresses and big knockers. What a waste! I'm very happy that Brian found something bigger and better. Good for him!
