95.7 FM, The Game finally had a top-arrow book, a real good one and in addition to posting a 2.0 plus in the Overalls --is beginning to take a bite ( a little) into some of KNBR's territory--KNBR itself saw a dramatic drop from a 5.1 to a 4.1 but as remind you, these ratings are not the ones that advertisers look at, they're the so-called "beauty contest" numbers.
Here's the full rundown.
So tired of hearing KGO's talk show hosts spend so much time promoting their books, plays, comedy appearances, etc., on their shows. There are already too many commercials. If you listen to a podcast of the shows, there is less than a third of the time spent on actual talk anyway, and the endless self-promotion just adds another layer of commercials. Maybe KGO should get paid for ad time by the host if the self-promo runs longer than 5 to 10 seconds.
ReplyDeleteI think Ronn's 3 hour show is actually less than an hour of actual talk. When he has a good subject, I want to hear more but you have the tons of commercials and news breaks every 6 minutes, it's insane.
DeleteLooks like 910 and their "new" lineup is not working, sinking a little bit each month. If I recall Green960 had aound a.7 to .9 also and was replaced briefly with the Patriot, all Con radio, which got similar ratings. That was dumped and KSFO went all Con again, more than doubling those ratings or a tad higher than KGO is now. That tells me you can do decent if you have a good signal. Put all progressive radio on a strong signail like a KGO and they'll get at least a 1.6. Mix local with national guys and it may do okay. Mike Malloy on the graveyard shift is a perfect replacemet for Ray T.'s old late night gig. Can't be no worse than John Batchelor...yawwwwn
ReplyDeleteA fish rots from the head down. 95.7 The Game no longer has that problem. Props to them.

DeleteBesides Armstrong and Getty (which I know Rich hates), the rest of the 910 lineup is pitiful. Replace them all and make it a better station
ReplyDeleteKeep Gil Gross. He has great interviews and manages to explain current events in a very concise way. Alan Combs can stay since he is entertaining.
DeleteWish the Game wouldn't do unfortunately what many sports radio stations do and that is hire people who haven't worked in the industry before and think they are know- it- alls. 'The Guru' and Jeanna Franco are just a few examples. Hiring back the annoying nasal voice of Dan Dibbley is also some sort of a mystery. Wasn't he canned by their earlier PD? I guess the new guy wanted him back. Also, John Lund's constant penis jokes and his annoying laughs and giggles on the air are beginning to rival the loathsome Fitz and Brooks on KNBR show which is unlistenable fare. I wish Greg Papa, who should know better, wouldn't encourage such behavior from the juvenile Lund.
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side, the mid morning/early afternoon team of Haberman and Middlekoff is very good, and Damon Bruce, (who sometimes sounds as if he thinks his own farts don't smell: "remember, sports don't build character, they reveal it," "and just like that…he's gone!!") is sometimes mildly entertaining, but the game has a long way to go before they make any dent in KNBR's ratings. The problem is that their signal fades in and out unless you live near the city and they don't have one of the 'Big 3' bay area sports teams, but are saddled with the bottom three, (Sharks, Raiders and A's), so that hurts them. All things considered though, it's good to hear that KNBR is getting a little competition these days. Outside of Tolbert, Kruger and Ray Woodson, there's really no reason to listen anymore to the 'Sports Leader' unless they're carrying a game.
Gianna Franco is not new to radio. She was an update anchor with Fox Sports Radio and worked traffic on KCBS before 95.7
DeleteI was with you @12:34 until the Kruger part. He's okay for football, but I'll give you a recent comment of his that was dead wrong. He said the Warriors made Luke Walton interim head coach because Walton wants to be a head coach some day. So what? The reason I suspect they made Walton head coach is the Warriors had defense locked down with asst. coach, Ron Adams, and the Warriors are working on refining the triangle offense this year - outside of Kerr, Walton knows it better than anyone, also playing under Phil Jackson with the Lakers. That's the reason. Not because he wants to be head coach some day. Good gawd.
ReplyDeleteGianna Franco has a ton of experience in Sports/News/Traffic she worked radio & TV in Los Angeles, San Diego and Phoenix before coming to the Bay Area.
