KGO Radio Changes For 2016; McSweeney And Bunker On KNTV Winning Combo; KTVU Cutting Edge Sports Talent; Armstrong And Getty Vanilla Ice; Sunday 415 Media Breakfast

The "Big" changes that are scheduled to hit KGO Radio in the coming year involves the elimination of news--lots of news. The rumor mill has it that the PM news --from 3-7 PM is all but gone. I'm guessing you'll be hearing more talk show hosts--local and syndicated. It won't be like the old KGO but it will be significant news-talk, and yes, traffic.

The weekend? Almost all syndication and taped programming. It's cheap mind you.

*At the very least, KGO should prime John Rothmann for his political analysis --there's an upcoming election in 2016 and Rothmann knows politics like I know the lamb shanks at Tommy's Joynt.

*It's not that Gil Gross is merely boring; it's his nasal, annoying voice that makes boring topics more boring. And Gil, Rhoda is your wife but her Friday spiel is an audio Gitmo. 86 her immediately.

*One of these days Jim Eason and Bill Wattenburg will tell you what they really think of Ronnnnnnn Owens.

*So too, Ray Taliaferro.

*That radically different morning show coming soon during the week on KGO-TV will be directed by an EP that many newsroom staff can't stand. Should be interesting.

*Phil Matier, Sunday morning coffee on KPIX is pretty good local TV if you like that kind of material. It certainly beats the crap on Monday thru Friday.

*Rothmann is not a one-trick pony contrary to the naysayers who hide behind closed doors. He knows politics and the Middle East, sure, but he knows sports and pop culture too and therefore all the other innuendo is complete bullshit.

*Sorry, Jack Swanson hasn't spoke to Mickey Luckoff in years --my bad.

*Lee Hammer is running both KGO and KNBR--that's a heavy load when you throw in KSFO too.

*Armstrong and Getty: Midwest hacks that have all the charm of a Citrus Heights strip mall.

*KGO-TV is interviewing prospective Hispanic reporters from out of the market for its morning show and other platforms.

*Terry McSweeney and Peggy Bunker on KNTV (NBC Bay Area) have terrific chemistry on the weekend which isn't such a bad thing to have.

*If Rob Roth, Tom Vavar, and John Sasaki are still on KTVU after Dec. 31 I'd be shocked.

*More KTVU: Four sports anchors/reporters will be shaved to 2 soon. After all, "there's only one two."

*Men without ties on KPIX. Very insightful look. Damn genius whoever thought that up. And Dennis O'Donnell? The hair twirler has a crush on you but I won't tell anyone. (I think it's the tie less thingie)

*That ultra-hot female traffic reporter on KGO Radio during the weekday morning and afternoon only dates Christian guys, sorry everyone else.

*That new, female EIC at the Chronicle hasn't penned an editorial or simple piece since she took over because, according to my Chron spy, she can't write worth a shit. But at least she's a "real journalist" and not a blogger.

*"Talk 910 AM Radio" --Melba toast with a cup of vinegar.

*"Star 101. 3 FM: see above post.

*Dave Padilla and his stupid "rise and shine" verbal joust on KCBS is downright silly. STFU, Davie.

*Today on the Michael Krasny 'Forum" KQED Radio Show, Mike interviews Dr. Baldy McFuckface on the history of soy milk.

I'll bet I have a good idea what Bill Wattenburg & Ray Taliaferro think of Shekel Lowenstein, considering Lowenstein was the only one unaffected by the Great Purge of 2011. Coincidence?? And as for Dave Padilla & his "Rise & Shine" horseshit, you shut your fucken hole, Padilla!! Rrrrr!!!

  2. If you think Lee Hammer actually "runs" anything then you don't know Lee Hammer. You can find him in his office doing nothing, including not listening to any programming, when he's not out golfing or watching a remote take place. Any excuse to be anywhere but work!

    1. Lee Hammer. Hahahahahahaha. Everyone who knows him knows the truth. The above is spot on. Someone ask Steve Sklenar about Lee Hammer and his little assistant Jen who is the only person who actually works less than Lee. Hard to not form a union when all the full timers don't do shit and get benefits while we little people do the work. Screw them.

    2. And don't forget that the 9:00 to noon host is very anti-union
which makes a unionizing the labor force almost impossible.

  3. Is Rothmannnn biased or does he call it down the middle?

    1. He calls it like a rich guy who has never had to work a day in his life but probably reads the NYTIMES every morning and then acts like a moderate.

    2. Rothmann's VERY biased. I've heard him say (& I quote) that he "doesn't trust an Iranian as far as he could throw him." I think that counts as bias. Also, he's been a prominent attendee at Pro-Israel rallies in SF, and he seems to be very chummy with the Israeli Counsel General & Jewish High Society in SF. So, Yes, he's biased.

    3. John Rothmann is not a journalist he is a talk show host, so he might be biasd on some issues. Is Hannity, Savage and Levin biased? I think so, they still have a large following, although I'm not on of them.
John is hard to pinpoint, he is more to the right when it comes to Israel, most other issues more to the left, and when he does political analysis he can be quite neutral. I suspect many peg him to be to the left and then their bias come into play in their assessment of John, others whom are not favorable to Israel will think he is right wing, and then not really listen. I find John to be fair, and can draw the caller's opinion out in a respectful way, which is one reason he is interesting. The other reason is his knowledge, and passion for his subject, and his obvious delight in being on the radio. I suggest everyone listen to John with an open mind, and you might just learn something, even if you don't agree with him.

    4. John comes from a wealthy family, but he was a regular host on KGO for years, he did 2 nights a week 1 to 5 a.m and 1 to 4 a.m. this was on the week ends, I believe Ray was on from Sunday night through Thursday (actually Monday morning through Friday) and then John was on the 3 nights Ray was off. Later he took over from Bernie Ward Monday through Friday from 10 p.m to 1 p.m. that in my book is work.

    5. At least hes not Alan Colmes. Thank God for that.

He, like myself, has obviously dealt with a few of them.

    1. And that is a very broad speculative statement. You don't really know that. There may be a few of them with that attitude, and there are others who are really nice.

  7. Leave Dave Padilla alone. "Rise and Shine" is a nice, cheery thing to say. As far as I know, he only does it Saturday mornings at 6:00am. There is nothing to complain about. I hope that Dave doesn't let this ultra-petty criticism stop him from saying it.

    1. Padilla's rise and shine clowning on Saturdays is enough.
Does he realized no one takes him seriously while reading the news.

  8. According to wikipedia Krasny hosted a weekly
Marin County talk show called "Beyond the Hot Tub".
This sounds like something from a horror show, where he plays the creepy neighbor voyeur.

  9. Bret Burhardt and Niki Madora have to be sweating bullets and sending out resumes to KCBS if what you say is true about the afternoon news at KGO Rich.

  10. I like McSweeny and Bunker, but especially like Peggy Bunker who has a great figure and a very pretty face! They are very experienced anchors as well.

And yet I get flack when I tell you morons they look for "ethnics." Talent doesn't matter; it's ethnicity. If you're looking for a "white male," that's racist. If you're looking for anyone else, that's progressive and not discrimination.

  13. Give Rothmann and Pat Thurston 5 days and Christine Craft at least 2 days and that will be a good start. Dump Drex and John Batchelor and work on the weekend syndicated crap, and no Cal sports. Put that on a sports station.

    1. Should raise the demo a good 10 years

    2. @2:56 that would make me happy and be a huge improvement what they have now.

      Delete
    3. Yes that would be better than now but that's definitely not making it great. Anything is better than now. Have to focus on lowering demo and finding new listeners. No point in appealing to 60 year olds. Short sighted.

      Delete
    4. Thurston? Craft? Who sponsored this trip back to the 1990's?

    5. Most of talk radio appeals to older audiences and I know advertisers don't really covet them. Tough to appeal to younger listeners when most don't come near a radio.. I listened in my early 20's and still do in my mid 50's, but Corey and Joel and Drex don't appeal to anyone.

  14. I bet if Ronnnnn let Eason fill in for him for a week, Ronnnn's ratings would be measurable again.

    2. I don't miss Bernie. He polluted the airwaves enough. Stay away . . .

    3. They could give John Rothman his old spot from 10 to 1 p.m. and let Pat continue the 7 to 10 p.m., or the other way around. Definitely get rid of Drex, he has been gone a long time, and I don't think anyone misses him, is he sick, or is it a contract dispute? I'm okay with John Batchelor in small doses, he has some interesting shows, but he is on sooo many hours, since we are not getting him live anyway, he can 1 p.m. to whatever.

  16. Audrey Cooper can't write, but the problem is bigger than that. She can't figure out what belongs on p1. She ignores the major stories of the day and fills the front with soft features. When you pick up the Chronicle, you'll get a front page feature about comedian Mort Sahl but not a word about a guy who killed his girlfriend in San Mateo and is now on the run. When you get hard news, like the story over the weekend about Jerry Brown's emails regarding the San Onfre Nuke shutdown, it's several weeks old. The Chron was beaten by the LA Times on that one, as is so often the case. Audrey doesn't have the instincts to know what's news, so she's taken an all-features approach. That way she doesn't have to decide whether the climate conference in Paris is more important than, say, the hot cop arrested for hit-and-run. It's as if the Chron has decided to compete with the SF Weekly with feature stories and let the TV stations set the agenda when it comes to hard news.

One more thing -- Audrey is a nice person who is very concerned about her professional reputation. She wants to be seen as both a feminist and a mom. But she can't write anything more than a 3 graf police brief. Her internal emails show what a weak writer she is. It's embarrassing to have a boss who doesn't know the difference between it's and its.

    1. Class, can anyone see the problem with a print newspaper emphasizing breaking news? Bueller? Perhaps that the story is outdated before the paper is even printed?
The problem is the same as what the sports section solved years ago: everybody knows who won the game so the writer has to bring something fresh to the readers' attention.
That explains why Bruce Jenkins still has a job. And why, with a surfeit of sportswriters after the merger, C.W. Nevius became a columnist. They provide something for the reader that doesn't immediately go stale.

    2. There's a reason why Audrey Cooper can't write or edit.
      Rather simple.
She is too busy waving those orange and black pom-poms.

  17. Definitely dump Drex! I'm a 55 y/o female that has listened to KGO since I was 22 years old. I can listen to just about anything EXCEPT Drex and pre recorded infomercials.

  18. I tuned into Ronnnn Monday morning. Unfortunately, he had the insipidly boring "Hey! I'm a black guy!" Copie sitting in. I instinctively reached for the dial but thought I'd give it a shot. What the hell, it's the holidays. Maybe he could get through 5 minutes without injecting race into the topic.

The topic was Planned Parenthood shooting and if Fiorina's incendiary "baby parts" comments provoke such incidents. So far so good...
But then he goes on to mention that some believe that the planned parenthood agenda is to exterminate the black race.

Leave it to Copie to inject race into every issue. Just drop it already, okay? Nobody care what color you are. Your act is old.

    1. But many people do believe that Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist, and that eugenics means to stamp out "inferior" "races" by limiting their reproduction. Hundreds of black men and women were actually sterilized in this country between the wars -- by various governments, not by Margaret Sanger.
(Sanger's goal was to help poor families limit the number of their children to those they could afford to raise properly. Her own mother was pregnant 18 times, resulting in 11 live births. Sanger blamed her mother's untimely death at 50 on all the babies she had had.)
Race is already part of this issue, as is class (rich women don't go to PP). Telling Copie in effect to ignore the racial aspect of a currently live issue makes no sense. I wouldn't dwell on it, but I would mention it.

  19. I agree with 7:27, why shouldn't Brian talk about race, lots of people do, Savage, lot of right wing hosts always talk about reverse racism. Race unfortunately is still on issue in the US, so what is wrong with a black man giving his opinion and experiences? He is quite reasonable and middle of road, has taken several stands against the more militant black voices. I for one find Brian interested most of the time.

Side note for those of us was hoping Drex would not return, I can inform you that he will be back this Monday (KGO promo), I have only one comment, bummer.
Back to Alan Colmes for all 3 hours, I like Alan, but I also like to have a choice.

There is a reason why Padilla works the weekends at KCBS.
