Fuck the Millennials

They have suffocated our media. They have contributed to the general malaise that has infected and affected our way of life and how we deal with one another. They have ruined our culture and promoted, willingly, I may add, the destruction of basic morals and manners.

Fuck the millennials.

They don't read anymore. They engross in mostly inane chit-chat on their shitty little smart phones engaged in universal verbal nothingness. And we're supposedly supposed to cater to these assholes? Fuck 'em. All of them.

They've become advertiser's dreams. Really now? Why. Because they spend money on computers and go to the movies. I'm 53 and went to pay my 15 bucks and see the new James Bond movie. I even bought popcorn and a diet coke. Thirty bucks. What a dinosaur I am, go figure.

Millennials have invaded our TV/Radio business. Some of them are actually pretty good at their craft but the majority are piss-poor amateurs who couldn't ad-lib their way out of a paper bag. I especially like the shitheads who can't pronounce the correct street names locally. I count the number of times the morons--male and female alike--who uttered out, Doyle Avenue and not Doyle Drive. Or the turd heads who referred to the huge Sutro Mountain Tower and not Sutro Tower. Idiots.

They have ruined our most basic passion of having a good dinner out by schlepping out their crappy little smart-ass phones at classy restaurants. God forbid they couldn't put away these horrible machines for five minutes.

"Oh, Rich, you're just angry --get in with the times! Move on to the future, dude!" What future? We're supposed to be cozying up to this shit? Excuse me, I'm going back in time and to the past. A lot healthier era where people had manners; people wouldn't pull out phones in a classy restaurant; people wouldn't fuck up successful radio and TV stations and hire folks who had talent; people wouldn't tweet out some bullshit and offer it up as "my take" and consider it literature.

You millennials, thanks for fucking up our culture. Thanks for contributing to the death of newspapers. Thanks for destroying actual conversation--remember that? Before, conversation was natural. A cup of coffee in the morning and conversing at the local Starbucks. Now, conversation has become sort of a felony --we can no longer talk, we text, tweet, Facebook, gees what a great country we are, and you, fucked-up millennials, all made it possible.

I'm not going to cater to the miscreants. And dare I catch any of you assholes wrecking my occasional dinner out by your rude-ass cell phone. There's a place in NY--PJ Clarke's --where they confiscate shitty little mobile phone and put them in a jar when you arrive. When you're done with dinner and drinks, you can get your phone back. Too bad every decent restaurant in this city couldn't apply the same rules; maybe they're afraid some of the tattooed morons (hipsters) won't patronize their place. Then again, do hipsters/millennials actually eat? Or do they all just sip soy milk and eat tofu. I've never seen a millennial eat a steak or fried chicken. And for a group of people who preach health and happiness they say will bring you harmony, I've never seen so many of these creeps with a cold! Go figure.

So, again, while you all try to cater to these mutants I'm sticking to yesterday. I bought the print edition of the NY Times (which I do almost daily); I'm going to have a couple of dry martinis (stirred, not shaken); and forgo some shitty concoction like Red Bull and vodka; I'm going to the bar and jukebox and listen to some Sinatra and Dave Brubeck, maybe a few Lou Rawls tunes and some old Janet Jackson. You fucking hipsters can have all the Maroon Five your heart desires. And take that asshole, Kanye West with you.

Fuck the millennials. They have no decorum and style. They are the human strip malls of society. They have zero taste. We humans appreciate culture and good food and wine and good movies and the like; they think spending the night freezing their ass off so they can be the first in line to buy an IPhone is hip and cool. I say they are fucking idiots. These are the people who think American Idol is a documentary. This is what Madison Avenue wants to attract? And I'm supposed to be jealous of this? What a sham, what a disaster. And we wonder why our country is going downhill.

Like I said, and I'll say it again and again: Fuck the millennials.

    1. This is mostly a west coast thing. Go back to the midwest and they aren't catered to so much because there isn't so much money lying around. I had a consulting contract about an hour north of Detroit about two years ago after living in California for years and was pleasantly surprised by how much the industrial midwest had not changed since I left in the early nineties.

Why are we doing this out here? When someone says Millenial the first thought that comes to my mind is young, stupid and cheap. The phenomenon exists because we allow it to.

If you're looking for something to chew on, try this: What happens to the Millenials the first time they can't borrow money at one or two or three percent? What happens if there's a major war and they or their kids are suddenly swept up into a global conflagration they can't protest their way out of? I've got news for you...the community organizers will be drafted along with everyone else. In The Big One, those folks went first.

  9. Dear Mr. Lieberman,
You owe you very existence, your blog here on the internet, and your tweets on twitter, to the very same technology you are railing against. All the revenue you receive comes from this "new technology" that you are so angry about. You would have no audience without the internet.

Seems like you should be grateful instead of angry.

    2. Dear Millenial,

What we're objecting to is your generation's seemingly inexhaustible arrogance, narcissism and sense of entitlement.

You didn't invent this technology. I'm sure you know what a VM or virtual server is. IBM was already putting something called LPARs (logical partitions) on mainframes in the early 1970s. If you work in a large scale enterprise environment (big banks or insurance, large universities, etc) there's a good bet they still have it and that's because they work! They don't go down. The government has mainframes that haven't been down in years.

It seems to me the main thing that's got the country such a mess is that we allowed Congress to pass the repeal of Glass Steagall in 1999 with bipartisan support. We wonder why we have income inequality at levels which we once thought were intolerable. We popped one tech bubble in 2000, a financial bubble in 2008 and now we're facing the same scenario in tech and social media. Who will be at ground zero for that? YOU...and some of you understand what's coming but most of you don't. Those of us with a little gray hair or age induced blubber around our midsections understand all this and you would be wise to pay attention and listen to us.

I'm not inclined to feel grateful to you for anything. The world does not revolve around you. SF has always been a boom and bust town and one day very soon, the present bubble will burst. The last bubble's bursting yielded the worst recession this area had seen in fifty years. On top of all that, we're also looking at rising interest rates.

I've said what needed to be said. Maybe you'll listen. Maybe you won't.

    3. You are talking to an entire generation of people as if it were a single, individual with a single personality.

Are you really trying to suggest that an entire generation is somehow more blameworthy than all the generations that proceeded it for the laundry list of deficiencies they are being accused of here?

Sounds more like scapegoating than rational thought.

For what? Getting older? He can't help that. Today they fire people just because they look old (oh sure, they invent other reasons, because that's illegal) and replace them with Millennials, because Millennials work for 1/4 what someone over 40 will and will use shit like Uber instead of own cars. There's nothing wrong with the work of these older workers--au contraire, they're generally far superior--but they want all young faces because the perception is they're smarter and more savvy. And that's bullshit. My wife, with no accounting degree, works in her job regularly with Stanford MBA grads and she says they don't even understand basic accounting. And they don't care.

      Delete
    4. He didn't get fired for getting older. He said he lost his job because of the decline of the newspaper. Companies don't hire millennials because they're smart, it's because they're cheap. One other thing, degrees don't mean shit these days. Saying those Stanford grads don't know accounting...there is a whole shit load of people, young and old in this world who are not qualified for their job.

    1. An excellent question.

I've been sitting at a desk for about thirty years and of course my neck and shoulders are a mess. One of the many massage therapists who've worked on me over the years launched into a tirade one night about Boomers and just how poorly they have performed in their duties raising the Millenials. I just laid there and listened as she sounded off.

I also think it has a lot to do with the country going through a very affluent period during the time most of those folks were growing up. Think back to 1995-2000, 2000-2005, etc. Money was cheap, the tech thing was playing out, etc. Standards for students looking to borrow money for college were changing, etc. These guys HAD IT ALL and in some ways still do when compared to Gen-X or the Boomers. The Boomers had a better economy but weren't as well educated and I would daresay the nation itself wasn't as affluent.

      Delete
    2. Well, if you are relying on your massage therapist for insight, that says a lot about you, not your generation.

These ridiculous generalizations about generations: Boomers, Gen-X, Millennials etc., creates arbitrary categories of people that are divisive and not particularly enlightening.

  25. Millennials were not in power and did not willfully destroy the business model of T.V., Radio and Newsprint. Millennials are not the ones who continually sell those arms of communication down the river for a quick money grab.
The Patriots of this country had their alternative press to fit a more realistic narrative, as did the underground papers of the socialists striving for economic equality in New York in the 1930's, as did the alternative press that gave birth to the voice of the boomers, who scared the crew cutted knuckle dragging establishment of the time. No different. Each generation that is seeing that their time is slipping by feel the same. I'm 55, and yeah, it sucks that I am qualified for certain careers, but will never crack into Google or Apple or Yahoo or the newer emerging places because I do not fit their "corporate culture". Can they be more polite? Of course, common courtesy dictates you respect everyones' space and we conform to social graces since this is supposed to be a civilized society. 31. By far, the most nerve hitting and true that post on this site. Ever.

Millennials don't give fuck all about anyone except themselves. They are some of the most selfish people on the planet. Race or sex knows no bounds in this case. They're all the same. And if you give them money, look out. They're like little children who want to do things their way.

Tech people are in the same category. Especially VC people who want to invest and get a great return. As a price for the wealth, they look to cut costs by jettisoning experienced people and losing quality in the process.

Both of these groups have zero people skills. They like to interact through their smart phones, tablets and spreadsheets. They have no compassion, no heart, no respect for anyone.

The tech industry looks for disrupters. They cherish this kind of action. It's okay to disrupt and make change. Just beware of what you do to people. However, these zombies don't care. It's all about ME.

Just remember: in 20 years, these piss ants will be the brunt of another generation, which could be worse than this. They'll be crying on their gadget of the day. What comes around, goes around.

I felt like I had returned to 2005. Of course as soon as are in the SFO Park n Fly bus 15 millenials stormed the bus getting on their phones looking up Yelp reviews for Japanese restaurants in Glen Park then making us suffer through phone calls to see how long the wait was. 36. Best column ever, Rich.

Perhaps the Milleniums need to learn who invented the PC, cell phone and other devices that are so much a part of their lives. Yup, the Boomers. We are the ones who are brought in to run the tech companies the Milleniums started because they think work consists of free lunches, fussball, "working from home," and everything else that is cool.

They are the product of "everyone is a winner" parenting, for one. They are coddled from birth and expect the rest of the world to kow-tow to them. Manners and politeness are unknown behaviors.

I have worked with them and know of what I speak. Never again. The only rules they follow are the ones they create. Back in the day, engineers pulled all-nighters to meet deadlines. Now, they show up at 10 am, take two-hour lunches and leave at 4 pm satisfied they have put in a day of hard work.

I could go on, but suffice to say, the majority of the comments are in agreement. Karma's a bitch, and they will find out soon enough.

In the meantime, we can only dream of the city that once had its unique culture for generations. SF is not any different than any other large American city, thanks to the invasion of advertising's demographic of little darlings.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Most millennials are more likely on a phone rather than a computer. They'd rather see video than read a long-form story. As for how much they spend, I believe advertisers are making huge errors in judgment by trying to cater ads to them. Just look at all the animation now in advertising aimed at adults. Old farts like me may not buy like millennials but my last camera cost more than most millennials will spend on a car. Add up my gear, and it's half of what a house will cost in mid-America. I'm in my mid-50s and saw my industry mostly destroyed: publishing newspapers. In my work which has picked up in the past two years, I cater to a niche audience filled with people of varying ages, cultures and countries. But, I agree with you. Sorry to my children who are all millennials. And, every sit-down restaurant should confiscate phones.

  39. Rich, I couldn't agree with you more......it's as if I were reading a column written by myself. I'm slightly older than you (62). I served 20 years in the military (71-91), went to college in California on the BI Bill (longest 4 years of my life because the liberal wave was just hitting academia strong at the time). Left California for flyover-country and have owned and operated my own business since that time. I hire primarily non-millennials because older (35 & older) workers actually have a work ethic. I've developed quite a contempt for the millennials of late, justifiably if I do say so. I've observed male millennials have adopted the "hipster" look of late, you know, a beard, a knit cap, skinny jeans & what is supposed to be a sport coat, Starbucks in hand, iPhone in the other hand, the "I'M SO SMART" eye-wear with no prescription in the lenses, stupid tattoo's creeping out from under their shirts, Prius in the garage and Netflix on the 56" tube. Most couldn't tell you how many US Senators their state has, but can tell you who's the leader on The Voice. Most can't "DO" anything useful like fix a water faucet, unplug a sink, open the hood of a car, etc.......but THEY DO HAVE A DEGREE !!!!.....courtesy of mommy and daddy, although it's usually a degree in something real useful like Philosophy, Drama, etc.

I too, am sick of having to put up with the iPhone's in restaurants......hell, EVERYWHERE !!! I want to know WTF is so important about themselves that they have to be "wired-up" all the time?....not that I should care, it's really their business and not mine....just wondering. Most reassuring thing I saw at a restaurant yesterday was a 40+ year old dude discontinuing a phone call ON A FLIP PHONE !! as he was entering the place..........

    I'll show you how old-school I am:

    1) I still carry a flip-phone (with text-block on it) I don't text,...I call the person.
    2) I still have a land line in my house....use it every day.
    3) I have a wall mounted rotary dial wall phone in my kitchen that I use.
    4) I have a 40" wide, double-oven GE electric range made in 1966 in my kitchen.
    5) I have DSL for my home internet.
    6) I have a 19" Zenith wood console television in my living room....use it every day.
    7) My bride of 32 years drives a 15 year old car with 57K miles on it (albeit a 2000 Jag XKR).
    8) I drive a 26 year old car with 93K miles on it (albeit a1989 Jag XJ6)
    9) I've not played a video game since PacMan was popular (bored me to tears, even back then).

Over especially the last 7 years, I've noticed that the millennials have become quite adept at smugly ridiculing those, like myself, who CHOOSE not to upgrade items, whether household, autos,or "gadgets" (iPhone, iPad, etc.). It's also been my observation that, to the millennials, all that seems to matter is the "appearance" they project to others, be it accurate or not. I know several millennials who sacrifice financially just to be able to drive their stupid-ass Prius.........and they drive it very smugly too, as if they're just soooooooooo much better than those who DON'T drive a damn Prius.

My nephew was on his way to adopting many of the millennial traits I've listed above, including the smug ridicule of me for "having such old shit"........that is, until he discovered his name in my Last Will & Testament. I guess seeing a paid-for house with a pool, 2 paid-for Jaguars, some paid-for commercial property and buildings, and a paid-for rental home made him decide that having "old shit" wasn't such a bad thing to be guilty of after all. He's the only millennial I can tolerate in my life so far.....but he's on thin ice.

In summation, thank you Rich for allowing me to rant.......after all it's YOUR blog.....BUT YOU STARTED IT !!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Wow, you're really impressed with yourself, "a paid-for house with a pool, 2 paid-for Jaguars, some paid-for commercial property and buildings, and a paid-for rental home made. ."

Just wondering why you have to come to a blog to brag about your wealth.

    2. Anon@8:33,
So you have an older cell phone, a land line phone, an old TV, a long marriage, don't play video games...FINE, good for you. But what's your point?

You think everyone should be just like you? Great that you have two Jaguars. You're quite a guy...

    3. Congratulations on your two Jaguars and the decision to live in an undesirable place where the cost of living is low.

    4. A reply to my reply post. After re-reading my post, I can't believe I wrote such a snarky, arrogant diatribe. Where was my head? (A rhetorical question for sure, as it's plainly obvious where my head was). I'm just grateful that "reply-ers" were pointedly polite, particularly sidering my "chest pounding". Upon review of my original post, I found myself guilty of the same things I was berating the millennials about, i.e., self-absorption, narcissism, and arrogance. For the aforementioned, I offer a sincere apology to Mr. L. and the millennials I offended.

      Tasks for today:
      1) Look up definition of arrogance and cease practice of same.
      2) Look up definition of humility and initiate practice of same.
      3) Advertise Jags for sale and get more dependable vehicle brand.

    5. Jags are better than they used to be. They couldn't get any worse.

Outside the inherited or quick-shallow-stupid media and money culture influenced areas, the overall trend of public opinion is against the Millenial phenomenon. Go Columbus or Cincinnati and I can assure you the adults among us still make the big decisions. I KNOW it's that way in Dallas and Atlanta.

I'll repeat what I said below. There's a real vacuum here. Something's bound to happen to return our society to balance and what happened in France yesterday may well be an indicator of where it's to come from. Those who read me on a daily basis know I keep talking about another war, a big one. If that is what happens it'll be the Millenials who go into the wood chipper head first and it won't matter how much or to whom they protest. The community organizers will go first, happened that way in WW II and I'm sure it would happen again.

  40. It appears that the purpose of Lieberman's post and many of the comments is to demonize millennials, although it's entirely unclear who that includes. Apparently they are responsible for just about everything that's wrong with today's world.

Isn't it nice to have someone to blame for everything.

  41. Rich, this is your best post ever. This post/rant made my year! As I read it I thought you were channeling me!

The typical millennial and their sympathizers will never "get it". There is no substitution for mileage.

Anon @8:33: awesome post. Congratulations on a life well lived. Your prosperity is something these vapid punks cannot even begin to understand, let alone achieve.

    1. I'm a gut player because most of the time, it doesn't betray me. Listening to it has made me a fair amount of money over the years and taken me places I would not otherwise have ever been.

This time, my gut tells me something really big is coming to snap all of these people into line...FAST. It could be another war - a real war. It could be another structural recession like 1980-1982. In California, it might be a serious quake but I'm inclined to believe whatever it is will be economic in nature.

Something's coming. I'm sure of it.

  42. Damn kids! You sound like parents of the 60's when the hippies were taking over...Just because you can't relate to the change and the future of tomorrow...It's here to stay. BTW...stay out of North Beach or San Francisco entirely for that matter. We really don't like you bridge and tunnel folks coming here.

    1. Assuming you are an SF native or at least have lived here long enough (i.e., at least 2 decades) to be able to offer that kind of advice to those of us City natives who have chosen to exit the self-absorbed new City for the burbs. If so good for you.
If you are a transplant, you have no credibility to offer any advice to the bridge and tunnel crowd since you have zero recall or knowledge of the true SF and what it meant to all of the rest of us. So kindly go fuck yourself asshole.

  43. Things about millennials:
    1. Overuse of the word 'like'. Do you fuckheads know how dumb you sound? I wouldn't hire you if you worked for free.
    2. You morons are mostly responsible for the student loan crisis. Do you know what that's doing to our country?
    3. You're the assholes that are jamming into our cities and making everything in those cities unaffordable.
    4. And yes, you are an entitled bunch.

    Fuck you people.
