Trouble In Radio Paradise; KCBS' Top Tater, Corral Mad, Pissed Off At Everyone/Everything; Management Especially; Fears KCBS About To Become Old KGO; 415 Media Exclusive

YOU WOULD THINK there's universal harmony at the Bay Area's #-1 rated radio station; all-news powerhouse, KCBS but you'd be thinking wrong.

KCBS has been swimming in good news recently, with a new ND, Jack Swanson, and a top-radio constant, but one of its most tenured, veteran news anchor outside of Stan Bunger, is ROYALLY pissed off. At almost everyone and everything --this according to my KCBS Insider.

Longtime newswoman, Rebecca Corral, has been major-gripping. I mean, big time. She's apparently angry at just about everyone at the station, including management, and specifically, Swanson, whom she fears is about to turn KCBS into an old KGO news style, but Corral seems to be a lone wolf. Then again, her influence at the CBS outlet is that of 27 years and many people fear her. If the name, Corral, sounds familiar, it should be. Rebecca Corral is the younger sister of Al Corral, a veteran Bay Area newsman and exec, and ex-husband of former KTVU anchor, Elaine Corral.

Seems Rebecca Corral is mightily worried about the direction and future of KCBS, although, as we said, she's apparently in the minority, but her constant bitching seems to have made for internal discomfort at 855 Battery. Said the Insider:

"Corral is the major troublemaker... Not. Colross, (Melissa)--who is sweet. Corral bitches and moans about management constantly. Evil bitch. She HATES JACK. thinks he is a fraud. Hated Ed (former ND, Ed Cavagnaro who retired in April)--too."

Corral is not some cub reporter picked up off the street. She's a major player at one of the Bay Area's most powerful radio stations therefore her bitterness should not be dismissed as some sort of trivial nuisance.

Swanson is respected throughout the industry and at KCBS even though there's a well-known feeling that he's about to inject some old-time KGO nuances into the CBS station. As I indicated in a previous column, the changes are fairly subtle but according to those in the know, will become more pronounced as the days grow.

That said, Corral's act has been met with the usual twerping--good and bad. Most staffers respect her but a good portion thinks she's also a royal pain in the ass.

"I hate to use this word, but she's a complete bitch. A trouble-maker, " offered one prominent news hound, who asked to remain anonymous.

So far, Corral's state of discontent seems to be contained but many station staffers think a showdown between Corral and Management (read: Swanson) is inevitable.

  1. Oh hush, Corral, you shut your hole. Be glad you have a job. I would call you a ---- like your similarly-sized brethren Christine Craft, but that wouldn't be nice.

  2. Swanson will take KCBS to new heights. He will probably cherry-pick talent from KGO. Is that what worries KCBS employees?

  3. She is a reader of news. Totally replaceable, as are we all.

  4. Why is it a problem if KCBS emulates the old KGO? Many, many listeners would be delighted at the classic talk format and relieved to get rid of Paid Radio Health or Money shows. I suppose Ms Corral thinks a change is not needed. Well guess what, my Dear, your desires have been overruled. Get used to it.
Off Topic: Most women named Melissa tend to be sweethearts.

    1. Perhaps because materially changing the format of the #1 radio station in the #4 market in the country is a dumb fucking idea. See, e.g., KGO.

  5. Off-topic, but I wonder why there are so few women "at-the-top" in radio? Perhaps there are not any good female execs out there. Or am I not familiar enough with the industry and there are lots of women at the top-spots in radio? How about minorities?

  6. Jack has "The Right Stuff"! KCBS is lucky to have him!

  7. Wonder what Donald Trump would say about this... As Billy Crystal once said, "Don't get me started!"

  8. What's troubling about this posting is that we don't even know if it's true. We don't know if this is ONE PERSON who has a personal issue with Rebecca Corral. We don't know if this is ONE PERSON who is hoping to create the very fiction you describe in order to get Corral's job. We don't know how reliable the anonymous source is nor what his/her motivation is in spewing this poison. No one I've talked to in the newsroom remotely says anything close to what you've described.

    1. There is a vague claim that some people don't like another person. How is that different than any other office?

  9. But what does it all mean Basil?

  10. Some people are unhappy at a local radio station and some of the people dislike each other.

    Wow, big news.

  12. You read news over the radio, get over yourself. Do you think KCBS will lose listeners if she goes away?

  13. I don't know Miss Corral, nor she, me. I did not know, either, that she is a 5'7" distance swimmer. I do know that in the broadcasting business, it is extremely competitive and if you aren't concerned about major format changes, you are a dope.

  16. KCBS-AM isn't even in the top 7 among 25-54 Adults. KOIT is the big winner in that category this time (and last time, too).

    2. Well, you know there are few (if any) 25 or under people listening, so in order to be #1 they must skew extremely heavily in the colostomy bag crowd.

  17. A couple of months back, Corral was interviewing a guest. After the guest's final statement, Corral made a completely rude, dismissive comment about the guest's assertion and disconnected the phone call. TOTALLY unprofessional and "cringe-worthy" for listeners.

    ReplyDelete
  18. There may be some truth to her concerns.
Many listeners fear that KCBS may turn into an all happy news-talk station.
And that is something we do not need around here.

  19. Swanson built what was the KGO PowerHouse of old. How could he do wrong by KCBS?

    ReplyDelete
  20. There is not one shred of truth to any of this. Why would someone make all this up? Rebecca Corral is the most loved and respected person in the KCBS newsroom. You will find no one at KCBS who would ever utter a bad word about her. As for your source....could you please tell them to come and see me? I'd like to get them the mental help he/she clearly needs.

  21. This has to be something churned up from another co-worker who is on the hot seat right now. Have to deflect attention away from the real issue, right? Saving face and what have you.

  22. Jack gave the world Michael Savage. That counts as a radio GRAND SLAM HR!!! How many other execs discovered such a national treasure?

  23. she sounds as if she has a perpetual sinus infection

  24. Rich, i agree with 9:55 am in a previous post. I have know Rebecca for all of those 27 years and she is NOT a bitch and a very likable person. Whomever gave you that information may have some personal issues with her. I can tell you that she is a very good anchor, one of the best in the business and is extremely knowledgable. All you have to do is here some of the on-air interviews that are done during here A.M. shift after drive time. Corral knows what questions to ask and know how to get the most out of an interview. She is a real pro in my book.

  25. Everyone in our newsroom knows Melissa wants Rebecca's job, always has. Plus, Rebecca is the definition of a great co-worker; hardly a bitch. Clearly "mcu" is the insider. (And she "misspelled" her own name to throw colleagues off the scent! Oldest trick in the book!)

  26. Agree with Mike. Rebecca is class. Jack is my way or the highway. There is much more to Jack that the nice guy. THey are not nice at the top...only until they get there. With Rebecca and Mike on this one.
