They Had The 2015 Northern California Emmys In SF Saturday Night

They had quite a party Saturday night; that annual local ego fest called the Northern California Emmy Awards.

Hide the kids!

I make fun of these dreadful dinners because they're dreadful. Often times the scene of long-winded speeches and unintended giggles.

And that's before the booze is poured.

Don't ask who won and lost. Most people don't care. Even the people who win tend to downplay the affair --some have been known to get blitzed and are flat out drunk on stage and off. That's a highlight. One year not that long ago I was invited to an EmmySF at the Hilton and saw some local TV weatherwoman go positively goofy --I think she raided the margaritas before the show even started. It was kind of funny.

Don't get me wrong. The Emmys are important and some people in the biz are damn good reporters and anchors and producers and are worthy and should be honored, it's just I don't know if the Emmy is the right deal Hell, in order to even win an Emmy you have to, get this, pay for the award! One noted reporter at KGO has so many Emmys he keeps them in his garage.

I have an idea: I say we all honor the winners some Saturday night at Tommy's Joynt. I'll be the emcee --we'll get wasted and have some grub later. No suits allowed. I'll tell jokes and breakdance. It'll be a blast.

  1. Rich, I think you really should throw a party and invite some or all of your blog friends so we can get to know each other.

    1. That would destroy the anonymity that Rich relies on to get a lot of his information.

    1. You're an indie blogger and "not a journalist" as you've long said, so, it's your right not to link to or share "Emmy winners" who you've ripped and trashed. However, it's juvenile. Some of these people don't sleep with with idiot at KRON or create chaos in this ego-blown world. Some take their moment in the spotlight seriously and graciously. I am one who would like to know who won (or lost) especially if they have been trashed by you in the past.

Yes, you have to "pay" to win an Emmy. So what? Many performers do to enhance their resume. Still, you should report and not just your personal bias Just be thankful that Radnich didn't win nor probably pay for one. That would be obvious fakery and insult to the local television industry.

  4. Are any awards show on the up and up? The Beatles never won a Grammy. Pia Zadora was "Star of the Year, best actress" for a movie nobody saw. Nirvana lost to Jethro Tull on the MTV awards. Taylor Swift as Kanye West told the world, "Didn't deserve her award"....
But,everybody likes awards. Everybody is talented.

  6. Wait, what? What do you mean you have to pay for the Emmy? Do you mean if you are awarded the Emmy you have to pay money for the statue itself or that the awards are pay to play?

  7. Oh yeah,Nirvana's Smells like Teen Spirit lost to Eric Claptons moldy oldie 'Layla' redone acoustic.
Metallica lost to the Tull. I read Ian Anderson didn't even know he was nominated and when told he won best hard rock band said "Hard rock? Well,I do sometimes play my flute loudly".
So much for awards. I mean,"the best" sportswriter of the year had said trading Cespedes was "brilliant". lol.best...

    1. You're anti-white. It's been proven time and time again by your postings. Don't spin it (I know thats what you're used to based on your party affiliation), own it.

  12. For most tradeshows or industry events put on by associations, you have to pay for awards consideration. I don't know why the local Emmys would be any different.

  13. Nor Cal Emmy's? So it is Bay Area vs. Sacramento? Kind of makes no sense to me

  14. NATAS charges an entry fee for each person listed on the entry. The fee is higher if the person entering is not a NATAS member. The difference in the fees is about the price of becoming a member, so most people do. In return, they receive a directory of production companies that almost no one ever uses. But I presume the production companies pay to be in the directory. So from every direction it's a great money raiser for NATAS.

The entries are then sent to another market for judging. Who knows who judges them. My colleagues and I always pictured a bunch of interns recruited to judge Emmies. Someone bought pizza and they looked at entries. If your entry played when there was still pizza in the box, you might have a chance. If the pizza box was empty when your entry played, you were already dead pepperoni, so to speak.

If you want to go way back in the history of the Emmys and how insubstantial they are, consider the early 1980s. Bob Jimenez at KRON did an outstanding series on the violence in El Salvador. He won the Peabody. He won the Murrow and a couple of other top national awards. He did not win a local Emmy.

One year, a big name local anchor entered a series. His was the only entry that received a nomination in its category. When the announcement came at the banquet, the word was that NATAS had decided not to give an Emmy in that category that year. Even thought he was the only entrant nominated, he walked away empty handed and never entered again.

  15. I'm not anti white. I have white friends. You think I never dated white woman? Funny that most people of color have white friends. But- and this is a new studies results, look it up on the net- 3 out of 4 white people don't have a single person of color they call friend.
So,I can see how you're FOX view of the world isn't reflecting reality.
