Bob Schieffer Retiring From CBS And 'Face The Nation'

Bob Schieffer is retiring from CBS' Sunday show, "Face The Nation". Bummer. I know the veteran Washington newsman has been hinting at retirement but I thought he'd hang in until after the 2016 election.

  1. So you're saying that he is retiring from CBS News AND Face the Nation???? Maybe he'll fill in for Brian Williams!!!

  2. Don't worry. I'm sure there are enough people expressing the same political opinions to take his place.

    2. 9:56 and 10 a.m. I think you are completely wrong, he is a throwback to a time when viewers (listeners) didn't know where the broadcaster stood politically, that to me is a true professional journalist, very few of those around these days, certainly not O'Reilly or Hannity, or to be fair Willy Geist or Chris Matthews, it is okay for these 4 mentioned hosts to do a show wearing their political viewpoints on their sleeve, but is just as important that a few hosts does a show without a political agenda. The late Tim Russert and Walter Cronkite comes to mind, and Bob Schiffer is on of those, I have heard him interviewed (on Ronn's show no less) he sounded very fair and pretty middle of the road political, on some issue a little left, on some a little right, but didn't really wanted to say to much, wanted to continue be viewed as just a journalist reporting the story. Too many people these days (on the left and right) cannot deal with that, they want someone they agree with, so they don't have to think too much for themselves. What a shame.

  3. Loved Bob Schieffer....one of the few remaining CBS links back to the Walter Cronkite years.

  4. Indeed, a loss for viewers. However, the retirement announcement said that he's 78, and has been with CBS for 46 years. He deserves some years of free time and relaxation.

I have always been at a loss to understand why CBS had him on the evening news ONLY as an interim anchor ... then moved him aside for Katie Couric (?!?!).

Good luck, and happy retirement, Mr. Schieffer.

  5. Very sorry to hear that as he is one of the best interviewers I have heard. However, as @12:51 states he deserves some free time. I have heard him mention that he has had health problems in the past, hope that is not the case now.

  6. He probably just wants to be free from facebook and twitter.

  7. So we're stuck with watching Brian Williams when he returns? Where is this world going to??

  8. Sorry that Bob is leaving. But maybe now KPIX will show Face The Nation in a full hour instead of only 30 minutes.

  9. Bob Schieffer has been a mainstay of my Sunday mornings for years. None of the fill-ins have really been all that great. And I agree with an earlier commenter who mentioned him being a link to the Cronkite years.

One of the things I enjoy about his interviewing style, is that when someone clearly avoids answering a question, he brings that reality to their attention. Too many interviewers let that kind of dodge slide.

At the age of 78, I hope he at least gets to enjoy a few years of retirement, without undue health issues dampening things.

May your retirement years be long and enjoyable, Mr. Schieffer! You've earned them... in spades!

  10. I guess Bill Plante and Leslie Stahl may be the last CBS Newsers left from the Cronkite era

  12. Big thanks to Bob Schieffer for bringing back some Cronkite like dignity to CBS News after the last Dan Rather fiasco.

    1. The Dan Rather fiasco could have been avoided if Schieffer (who was already weekend Evening News anchor) had slid over to the weekday chair and Rather had gone wherever he pleased. Courage...

  13. I first met Bob Schieffer in March 1992, when I was interviewing for my Congressional Fellowship in DC. Later I got to work along side him at many stories in DC as well as on the campaign trail several times. A total pro! Sad to see the last of the Cronkite-Brinkley era vanishing. Enjoy your retirement Bob!

  14. He's folksy, but just as liberal and one sided as Dan Rather. In the last few years he really has looked bad, not being prepared to ask the tough questions to this administration. But that part doesn't matter to you does it? Good riddance.

    1. 1:52 you are an idiot, read Mark Curtis blog before yours. Mark Curtis is an astute political analyst, he knows his stuff, and whenever I hear him he seem do a fair analysis of candidates, being the right, left or in the middle. I suspect you are on of those right wingers, who thinks anyone who disagree with you are a flaming left winger. Not agreeing with Bob Schiffer is one thing, but to end your blog with "Good riddance" shows you have no class, and no tolerance for anyone with a different viewpoint. There are several commentators I don't agree with Bill O'Reilly, Brit Hume, others, but in no way do I wish the would retire or disappear from the airwaves, we need a diversity of opinions.

  15. I heard Schieffer make the announcement the other day during a speaking engagement at I believe it was Texas Tech. He was very emotional and his voice cracked. We will miss quality journalists such as this fellow dearly!

  16. Why haven't we moved on from this 'earthshaking' news about Bob Schieffer? Is there really nothing else worth discussing Rich? It's been what? four days, five days, pardon me. Okay, so we're pretty much over the shock at this time, at least I am.
You must be double-busy with other matters, is what I'm guessing.
