KGO Radio Morning News Team Pimp The Subway Sandwich Shop on Broadway; Still No Freebies

Jennifer Jones Lee & Jon Bristow
"JJ and JB--pipes guy"

"If we mention you guys enough will you throw us a tuna foot-long?"
The KGO Radio Morning News mumblers --aka: "JB Bristow and "JJ" Jennifer Jones-Lee have been pimping the Subway Sandwich shop on Broadway across the street from their new digs.

This morning and yesterday morning too; it's almost comical--I mean, what's the average cost of a subway? 5, 6 bucks? OK, so it's not a Sweetjack deal but seriously.

Yet the giggler and pipes guy have been openly plugging Subby--hell, do this-- give an intern ten bucks, have him go across the street, and bingo, you got your breakfast sandwich. No need to pimp Subbie Dubbie. What's next, the Arby's in Fisherman's Wharf? (Although the French dip is outstanding)

Wait, maybe it's the culture of that "specialty programming" on KGO Saturday and Sunday.

Hell, even I pay my $7.95 for the turkey on French roll at Tommy's Joynt. (Damn worth it!)

Meanwhile..."Live from the SF/Broadway Subway Sandwich Studio, it's the KGO Radio Morning News, LIVE, from the Studio!"

  1. Rich, you're mean-spirited and inaccurate comments about any and all things that go on at KGO show how much you revile everything and anything that goes on over there. You seem to take delight in the fact that the that particular station has been going through much turmoil under the new clueless ownership of Cumulus, and instead of laying the blame on the suits in Atlanta, (the Dickhead brothers), you instead love to skewer Bristow and Jones-Lee who are simply hard-working broadcast journalists who are sometimes working under trying circumstances. For instance: did you know that KGO on-air talent has not had a new contract for SEVEN YEARS. That's means no one...NO ONE on the air has had a raise over there during that time? Why don't you bring topics such as that one up, instead of wasting space on your blog about "pimping the subway sandwich shop across the street from their new digs." WTF cares whether or not Jen and John might get a freebie from subway? If they do...more power to them! Is this insignificant item really worth a post? I would think you would have more relevant things to talk about than this nonsense, but then I forgot, you like to engage in gossip and innuendo. BTW, I would be shocked if you posted this response, and even more surprised if you actually had the courage to react to it.

    1. **shocked** Really? OK, you obviously care...and by the way, "anonymous" (surprise) just because it's "news" dept. doesn't escape my wrath, my take...I compliment, when I see fit, and I rip when something makes me rip--it's called having an opinion...So, please, thanks for responding and enjoy your tuna melt.

    3. You know, so few care about KGO "on air" talent not getting a raise / contract for 7 years. Who really cares? Is it YOUR business what they make? No. Are they forced to be at KGO - even with a new SAG-AFTRA contract being negotiated? No. They could go elsewhere if they don't like the conditions. They are forced to be there nor that good, if one considers the point of a meager 1.9 share. You're blowing smoke up skirts. No one is forced to be at KGO. If they don't like the conditions and the terms, they walk and be like other working stiffs. The problem with union intervention is the misperception that it's job "security". Don't believe me? Ask Karel. Ask other AFTRA signatories who found themselves fired from radio jobs. It's not job security. And it doesn't help you in bankruptcy court. Ask Karel. It's management, it's not having management with a direction (or a Program Director), it's a weakness like the awful DreX and Heather, it's too much BS and not enough working. Hell, KGO can't even do a legal ID on the hour in the DreX show. There is no direction. Contracts don't set directiion. Don't l ike it? Get off your asses and walk away.

    4. Is Karel talking about himself in the 3rd person?

  2. Subway is below dog food. Yoga mat plastics in my bread!

  3. Is 9:31am The Gigglers husband or agent? They bring up some good points though. Seven years and no actual contract negotiated. My guess is this sandwich shop is unaware of this morning serenade.

  4. Yoga mat plastics in the chest, face and body of most of these anchors we talk about as well.

    1. Agree about Subway, and Arbys is better than a lot of people think. Throw a little horsey sauce on the french fries sometime.

  5. Subway is a chain store and the folks behind the counter could be fired for giving you so much as an extra pickle slice with your (paid) sandwich; they have no authority to give anybody anything off the menu, celebrity or otherwise, plug or no plug. The people who continue to work there punch a clock and follow a rule book that is explicit about all of this.

Somewhat ironically, KGO is now also a "chain store" under the Cumulus banner; "Live and Local" is the exception now; portion-controlled corporate schlock along the lines of Savage/Hannity/Levin/Limbaugh/Batchelor/Komando/Edelman the future menu.

Finally, if air talent are in fact openly pimping for donations of any kind they could be fired for that by both Cumulus' rule book, and FCC payola guidelines that harken back decades. Cumulus REQUIRES each of us to sign a piece of paper signifying our understanding of this, annually. If someone at the Subway location were to give them a sandwich, they could take it because it's less than $20, but they cannot ask for it in exchange for anything said over the air; that is still illegal even less than $20.

    1. Yes, good points Some Guy. How could JJ and JB even hint about freebies when they'd know it's verboten both at Subway and Scumulus. "Live and Local"? more "Stupid and Silly".

  6. I don't go to my three local Subway shops. There owned by Indian people who do not speak understandable English. I'm tired of saying, what, huh, didn't understand you, say that again! Learn to speak English!!!

    1. Why? You have chosen not to go there. Why do they have to speak better for you? Maybe their not speaking better limits the amount of douche bags they have to serve?

    2. 11:46, it's 'they're owned', not 'there owned'.
Fix your own English, then criticize somebody else.

  7. So does this mean KGO employees next stop will be working at Subway?

    1. Well, after all most of them ARE upwardly mobile, so yes, of course.

  9. Because John and Jen actually mentioned Subway on the air a few times, Rich jumps to the conclusion that they are getting payola (a no-no in broadcasting, but so many people take advantage of it, believe me, I know!) and that he has an 'exclusive.' I say BFD , (big fucking deal!)

    1. Subway buys casual mentions from radio and TV everyday. Subway hass has product placement deals on TV also on the morning news shows.

It's no different than a "live read".

It's just the sneaky way to market to the kiddies.
      All of it perfectly legal.
Payola is not involved, just revenue.
The on-air folks are probably not getting a cut unless it's in the contract.
The PD says" banter about Subway for :20sec at 50 past the hour."

Or it could have been an honest to goodness casual reference, and later in the day an unnamed KGO staffer will show up to the backdoor of Subway...and receive a few foot longs on behalf of management.

      Only n the BA.

  11. The idiot chef, Scott, started the Subway stuff on Saturday...don't know what or why, didn't listen for long enough but he and guest(s) were trying to get the attention of Subway staff. One question would be: Why does anyone think that people that work at Subway would be listening to KGO? According to the monthly ratings, no one is listening. Maybe Subway workers would want to listen to Dregs, Chap, Ronnnnnnnnnn, and the infomercials . KGO certainly isn't attracting their old (more than one way) listeners.

  12. First of all, there has been a lot of shilling at KGO for many companies - lazier eye surgery, weight loss and hair care products, and used furniture to name but a few. In times past - back when Bernie used to work there, they were talking about the cars they purchased. I can only assume that he got his for free in exchange for a testimonial. So it has been going on a very long time - but it is much more aggressive now.

Speaking of advertising - can someone tell me who and what Kim Kamando is? I could only stand to listen to her so called "program" for about 2 minutes. As far as I can tell her so called show is nothing more than a 3 hour infomercial for the various (mostly) tech brands she shills. Am I correct in this?

As for putting KGO down - I do hold Cumulus responsible for this muddled mess. KGO used to be really good if not great. Now it is a pile of doggie do.
Angela PS I have to post as anonymous as I don't have a facebook etc. account.
