I'm a big fan of Cecilia Vega--you may remember she was a reporter for the SF Chronicle--then marched out of newspapers direct to KGO-TV before becoming a legitimate newswoman superstar and got a gig at ABC News in LA.
Now, she's really hit the career jackpot.
Vega and Tom Llamas are the new weekend anchors for ABC's "World News Tonight" broadcasts.
ABC made the announcement today. (Monday) They've been doing fill-in duty on the broadcasts since the previous weekend anchor, David Muir, took over on weekdays last September.

Do non-ethnic people ever get any jobs anymore?
ReplyDeleteFuck You, asshole.
Deleteanon at 4:18pm, perhaps a poor underrepresented white male anchor will get a national network anchor job, I heard there's an opening due to that Brian Williams thing.
DeleteFrank, shut the fuck up.
DeleteThe Brian Williams gig will go to a minority, almost certainly a black.
DeleteName me one high-profile white male hire in the last five-ten years.
Brian Williams replaced Tom Brokaw. Scott Pelley replaced Katie Couric. David Muir replaced Diane Sawyer. All in the last five to ten years.
DeleteGee, she always struck me as a big phony . . .
ReplyDeleteThere is a coldness about her but that's what the suits want to see. I suspect it's part of the job. She turns it on for work and off when she goes home.
DeleteWhat a rotten thing to say!! You don't even know her, I'll bet. She is a pro, she did well, and the least one could do would be to congratulate her on her success. Doesn't cost anything.
ReplyDeleteI gotta agree. They could have hired some dummy, but someone I know who knows her says she's quite smart.
DeleteWhat a bunch of douchebags on this site. I have seen her on the weekend ABC and think she does a great job. I remember her, from being in the Bay Area.
ReplyDeleteEven if this blog refuses to post this comment, Ms. Vega is and always will be a shallow reporter and that is what the corporate media prefers. No investigative reporting whatsoever. This blog's support of her contributes to the very downfall of US media of which it that it complains.
ReplyDeleteIt's rare for a newspaper reporter to transition to broadcast successfully. Jeff Zeleny and Gwen Ifill have also done it. Journalists with newspaper and wire service experience have better writing and reporting skills than journalists who only have radio or TV experience. It's sad, but true. Even Peter Jennings lamented never having been a newspaper reporter.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, we're seeing more TV stations, such as NBC Bay Area, hiring former newspaper reporters to write and edit their online stories. Proper grammar, punctuation, fact checking, instincts, story structure, and understanding AP style are still important. Kudos to the scribes (regardless of gender or race) who make it in broadcast. They make broadcast news better and more credible.
The last big network anchor hire was Diane Sawyer's replacement and it was a white man. Try to keep up.
ReplyDeleteYes, bingo, he seems to be white....the male part I'm still trying to ponder.
DeleteI've worked with her as a PR person and I was impressed. She was serious about her story. She's a lot taller and frankly more striking in person than TV will ever show. I've never watched a newscast because of an anchor, until now.
ReplyDeleteShe is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is that Cecilia actually was first at KTVU as a frequent guest morning show commentator. Many on staff wanted the station to hire her full-time. But then ND, "Special Ed" Chapuis, and then GM Tim "I Can't Spell My Own First Name" McVay blew the deal, and she went to see Kevin Keeshan, then the ND at KGO-TV. The rest, is history! Another boneheaded fumble by the worst management team in KTVU history! Gone fishin' now!
ReplyDeleteYou can just tell when someone has star power. I could see it plain as day when I watched Cecilia's work on KGO. It was just a matter of time before she went network. She subbed for Paula Faris on GMA last weekend and didn't do too badly. I think she's a better reporter than anchor, but I'm sure she'll grow into the role. Carolyn Johnson would have made a great network anchor or GMA host, but she got the next best thing. Maybe NBC will utilize her talents to their full potential.
