Too Damn Cruel; David Carr: 1956--2015

 Too damn cruel.

I was just reading the print edition of the Times and his article on Stewart and Williams fate and up pops the bulletin

Bob Simon and now David Carr.

Insane.

  1. Very cruel. Is it true Bob Simon was not wearing his seat belt? I may be mistaken but I believe I heard Tom Leykis mention it during the opening of his show today. With the passing of Brian Williams' career this latest death could be considered the third in the infamous urban legend of "death in 3s".

    1. Famous people die in threes because we group them in threes. They're unrelated events.

    2. I'm going to start grouping in fours. Then I want have to hear it as often.

  2. He wasn't, but it's not required for passengers served by livery transport in New York State. I believe he was in the back seat or a passenger front seat of a limo.

    1. You're right on all counts. Bob Simon was unbelted in the back seat of a car service's Lincoln Town Car, the driver was known for having a lead foot, and for reasons unknown sped up as he approached an intersection where the light was turning red, while the traffic around him was slowing to a stop. And the driver survived while Simon didn't. Not radically different than the way journalist David Halberstam died out here (in Menlo Park) a few years back.

    2. I immediately thought of the Halberstam comparison too. I have to do a fair amount of traveling for work and many times there are taxis with seatbelts that aren't there or don't work.

  3. The elite are oh-so-smart enough to make their own seat-belt decisions. The rest of the population need a nanny.

    1. Yes, the Dems will outlaw Lincoln Towncars now

  4. He looks sick. Or was the heart failure due to his heavy drug use?

  5. Truly a shame. David Carr was one of those people who had lived hard and was on borrowed time, and the credit line finally ran out. But damn, his columns were a thing of beauty. He wrote a few articles this week about Brian Williams and Jon Stewart.

For anyone unfamiliar with his work, here's a link to his last "Media Equation" column: http://nyti.ms/1uFri1c

  6. Why such a small neck?

    1. Carr had Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and (according to NPR's Fresh Air) had one of his kidneys, his gall bladder and half of his pancreas surgically removed previously. And of course there was all the crack cocaine and alcohol he'd consumed before becoming sober. He was brutally honest about his failings in the interviews that Fresh Air reran today.
