Karel And the KGO Radio Blah, Blah, Blahs; The Day After

 Forget Karel.

Like the company, he's irrelevant --completely  insignificant when you consider the future. Besides, he's been down this road before. I'm surprised it took this long for him to get the axe and truth be told, he was about to be fired by a previous manager who disappeared, like they all do eventually.

It becomes only a matter of time that you get shown the door when you brag about filing for bankruptcy (which he did and tried to be cutesy about it)--weird.

You also don't endear yourself to the bosses when you utter f-bombs and smoke pot on the air --I'm not a prude but it's terrestrial radio. Karel obviously didn't get the memo. Too busy medicating probably.

Pat Thurston will now broadcast in Karel's Saturday slot from 7-10 PM --Sunday from 4-7 PM. Oh, KGO? Might be a good time to remove this--it's still up.

*Follow me on Twitter but not on the red carpet. That's for entertainers.

  1. I'm sure with his MASSIVE following he'll become an on-line radio mega-star ala Tom Leykis.
    NOT!!!!

    1. Speaking of Leykis, he's very transparent about his show's finances. He says expenses are over $540,000 per year for his 4 person company. It took him 3 years to make a profit. Good luck Karel!

  2. So does this mean another wrong may soon be righted over on KSFO? Are they ready to get rid of Sussman, at least in the morning slot? Hope springs eternal!

  3. Something doesn't ring true about Karel's bankruptcy plan .. seems like a scam of some sort of debt-avoidance scheme to me.

For one thing, he frequently talks about being "medicated" almost constantly; where does he get the money for that?

And during the many boasts about his upcoming 13-episode stint on Free Speech TV, let it spill that FSTV is paying him NOT ONE CENT for the show, that he will finance it entirely and provide completed episodes to the network.. Producing a TV show, no matter how lame, costs real money; how can someone filing bankruptcy finance a venture that has a negative cash flow? I know I couldn't.

    1. Amen, 9:28!! How can anyone in good conscience donate any amount of money to a crowdfunding campaign where the prime benefactor very publicly declared bankruptcy?? Plus, if you listen carefully to Karel's podcast dated today 2-26, he states that AT LEAST HALF of what he raises will go towards his own living expenses instead of "paying for talent" (himself) for his ill-fated television venture. You think you can raise $100K in a week, Karel? Good luck.

  4. Celebrating ANYBODY's unemployment is truly low class..I expect Lieberman to be snarky but these comments about Karel are really a low blow and that does not mean I disagree!

  5. This is all personal stuff, nothing to do with his show, I did not care for his show, although I did tune in at times, but rarely listened for more than 30 to 45 minutes. You can file bankruptcy and still have medical coverage, he might qualify for medical pot, not sure, but I think all this is personal. I'm not sure why he got fired, like I said I didn't care for his show, but Cumulus does not seem to care about quality hosts. They finally hired someone good, Angie Coiro, and then fired her or cancelled her show after just a few month. They are keeping Brian Sussman and Katie, they are even worse than Karel. Anyway as much as I didn't care for Karel's show, I have sympathy for anyone who looses their job, especially when they are already in financial trouble, not a good position to be in.

    Thanks Karel!

  7. The housewife across the street would be a great addition to the KGO talk lineup. She's "wicked cool", is a liberal whose points are biased and one sided, and she used to be a pothead.

  8. And it's not just in the BA, Cumulus axes WLS Radio Chicago M-F team - http://www.robertfeder.com/2015/02/26/kass-cohn-out-at-wls-radio/

  9. Hoping they bring back david weintraub. Never understood how they kept Karel and not him. I like the no guests aspect. I tune in for the host not the guests.

    1. I'm told he gave Ms Bakos the cold shoulder so she had her boyfriend fire him. KGO sounds like a top shelf place to work. I'm just wondering why he isn't filling for Baxter anymore who has been our for a long while.

    2. I'd rather listen to a three hour infomercial about hemorrhoid ointments than David weinsob's amateur hour. You had your chance pal! It's over.

  10. Epiphany last night. I never listened to KGO to be entertained. I listened to hear discussion/debate about issues I cared about from a perspective I could relate to. I never gave a rat's ass about "good radio." I turned it off when that wasn't happening. It doesn't happen at all anymore for me except with Copeland, who, by the way, I frequently disagree with.

  11. While I never have cared for Karel, pre or post Joe the plummer, I am disappointed that he is gone. Primarily because as obnoxious and completely self absorbed as karel is, the new shmucks Kgo brings in seem to be worse. I know they won't pay anyone who is quality like a john Rothmann but every time someone new comes in, they're just so banal. It's like if every book choice was light reading, or worse, an Archie comic book. I hear enough about twitter and trending and 50 shades of grey...there's a lot more to talk about.

    1. Usually, Pat does a great job interviewing guests. Under those circumstances, she brings on knowledgeable people and takes on controversial subjects and LISTENS to what they have to say. The talk stuff... not her passion, I would guess with all the constraints management has put on her. Not big on her giddy side. I think she's better than that. If they ax her, I shudder to think what they will do with weekend late afternoon/nights. More infomercials? Gad zooks.
How can management make such a mess of a station once so great. It boggles the mind.
Re: Karel... as somebody said, no pleasure in someone's misfortune but, personally, I long ago grew tired of his self centered, monologue for hours on end. I realized quite some time ago that the aggravation I began to experience while he was on the air was caused by the way he ran his show - especially when he interviewed (himself) under the guise of interviewing other people. I often found myself shouting at the radio "Let THEM talk for Chrissakes." That was when I'd hit the "off" button. Maybe he'll learn something from this and come out better for the experience. Thank heaven for public radio.

  12. interesting. karel should submit his resume to the new kabc radio in los angeles. its new tmzish format is perfect for him.
they dont care if you sound good on the radio, make poo poo jokes, or steal your bits from other stations and personalities and they definitely dont care about ratings, which is why all of the above happens on a daily basis...no one is listening

I've always listened to Karel on KGO because he has a unique, offbeat view of life and the world. I was bummed that he was fired a few years ago and am bummed again. Karel's views bounced from left to right to center - (mostly left), which I found refreshing. Compare him to Pat Thurston who is left left left all day and night (I like Pat, but she's predictable.)

Karel has his flaws, which have been repeated on this blog. First he's the worst I've heard in handling callers - interrupting, not letting them make their points and then prematurely hanging up - "Thanks for your call" - click. Secondly, he was an obnoxious self-promoter, constantly announcing all his media links - that sucked. Despite his flaws, KAREL IS REAL!

All of his self-promotion - I thought he had a daily radio show as well - gave me the impression his finances had improved. I'm surprised to hear he declared bankruptcy. Good luck, Karel.

    1. So little interest/response in/to this subject suggests KGO and Karel are yesterday's news. Not much interest in either these days.

    2. I didn't care for Karel's show and rarely listened for long, but 7:31 you make some good points. I did get the feeling that Karel was real, he had a decent sense of humor. I been trying to warm up to the new guy Drex, so I tune in almost every night to listen, especially since I'm driving home from work. Frankly I think he is worse than Karel, he talks about nothing for the most part, now he has a woman on with him, so the two of them talk about nothing. Chip Franklin is fine, I like his sense of humor, his show is fast paced and his subjects are for the most part interesting.

    3. Would love it if this would be read by KGO, but I imagine it will not. After three, maybe four decades, KGO is no longer on auto dial. I will check in with Brian Copeland and Michael Finney because I think they both have something of value to offer but that is a handful of hours in a seven day week. For many of the reasons people who, like me~~used to listen to KGO many hours of every day!~~have already stated. What a sad commentary.
