Saturday 415 Media Coffee Shop; Shields Passing at KRON; The Fake Anchor 'Concern' Over No Rain; Drex And Karel Downside/Upside

Never met Brian Shields--KRON's digital manager passed away suddenly on Friday--I'm told he was a real nice guy--nobody deserves to die at 53.

According to a staffer at KRON, he was well-liked and free-spirited. Oh, and he was terrific at his gig.

"Lots of people are just shocked," offered one worker.

Life is cruel.

*It's been mentioned here several times but I have to mention it again: The faux look of concern by anchor as the weatherman says no rain. First off, it looks lousy. Nobody's dying. And it's a phony persona, as if the concern that "we need the rain" will be magnified by that look. Ridiculous. Please anchor people, STOP this fake shtick! You want to remedy your concern? Give 20 bucks to a food bank. Volunteer for Glide Church. Contribute to the cancer society. In other words, be real.

*Hey, Mike Amitori, KGO/KSFO: "Stay in your booth and quit talking to people!"

*"Drex" --good news/bad news: bad news: Another experiment destined for failure. Good News? No Karel.

*John Lobertini: power freak. Hey Lobes: between you and Amatori : KGO male yenta factory. (But at least you have talent).

*Sherry Brown, KGO anchor --my mock quote: "I can't anchor worth a shit but I do really look like Ann Wilson from Heart if she were 53!"

*Seriously, Karel, just why are you an entertainer? What is it that you do that YOU'RE an entertainer? If you're an entertainer I'm Queen Latifah!

*KTVU Weekend MO2: The new SF "Fox and Friends." Minus the politics.

*Normally I'm not one to compliment but Lyanne Melendez' of KGO-TV's follow-up of that nasty fire in the Mission district was absolute first-rate. Good, concise reporting. Interviews galore. Keep at it, LM!

  1. The severe drought is a very serious. Mr. Lieberman continues to belittle the problem for a few laughs. Farmers throughout the state are not laughing. This could have a devastating effect upon California's economy.

    1. The drought is made up. There is simply a water distribution problem. You want more water you build the infrastructure to bring it to you. Build a few large desal plants like in Saudi Arabia.

Don't depend on mother nature to do it all for you. Don't make excuses...ya fight for it.

    2. > The drought is made up.

      God, pinheads are everywhere.

The earth is flat, too. And there are aliens in the fridge in New Mexico.

    3. Rich didn't belittle the problem. He belittled the faux-sincerity of over-acting weather reporters and anchors. They look like silent film actors with the sad faces. The problem isn't fake, but the presentation is.

  2. Julie Haener was almost in tears last night. I put on ch2 when "Dateline" went to commercial on 11. I hear and see Julie say.."He will be missed. By family and friends"..she's beet red,her eyes watery and voice wavering. Then Frank reaches over and puts his arm over her shoulder. Go to commercial.
So ch2's really on the "be more personal with the viewers" bandwagon. I have no idea who she was talking about,I missed that. BUT!..when I came back after another Dateline commercial break ,Julie and Frank were all smiles. Like "We missed you,but not that much." Or even," We are over it".
    I wonder who died?

    1. I caught that news item. Julie got teary eyed after the report of a high school coach in his late 40s from the Danville area died of lung cancer (he was not a smoker). Frank announced: "our very own Julie personally knew the coach". She almost cried and Frank reached his hand out to her shoulder.

    2. Stan- the Person who died was Todd French, San Ramon Valley Junior Varsity Football Coach who died this week at the Young Age of 44 from Stage Four Lung Cancer(he never smoked) in Danville. Julie knew Coach French very well and obviously become emotional when Frank announced last night that he unfortunately passed away. Stan for you to say "we missed you but not that much. Or even we are over it" is really inappropriate and shows what a contemptible person you are. BTW I don't work at KTVU but watch nightly KTVU's 10pm Newscast and Enjoy Reading All of Rich Lieberman's 415 Media Posts.

    3. No,I what I said was that seeing Frank and Haener 10 minutes later laughing and smiling said it made it looked like "We got over it- already". Its was jarring. Because I watched between commercial breaks,it was one extreme to the other.
Like I said on my blog..maybe make that the last story of the day? If you're going to make it that personal.

  3. A few thoughts:

    > Nobody deserves to die at 53.

Oh, I could give you a list, both long and short.

    [Fake drought concern]

Why do you think it's fake? Do you think there isn't a drought? Do you think we're not going to pay more--maybe a lot more--for water soon? Do you not believe the climate is changing? It's not just this year or last year--in the last 15 years CA has gotten far less rain than historic normals. Why wouldn't they be concerned? I'm sure they don't lie in bed awake at night over it, but their concern is genuine, as is mine.

I'm sure Lobertini is relieved to hear you think he has talent.

    > Lyanne Melendez...

She has always rocked. One of the best I've shared a newsroom with. Glad you're finally looking at more on female reporters than their hooters.

  5. What Karel should really be mad at is that Jason Middleton is right now on the radio stealing his headlines bit.

  6. Rich you make a good point that needs to be emphasized.

"*KTVU Weekend MO2: The new SF "Fox and Friends." Minus the politics. "

It's the "minus the politics" point that I'm talking about. So many people are automatically ruffled when they see something, anything, with the FOX brand. KTVU is still local. It still employs plenty of good people who live in the Bay Area and may or may not be of the same political stripe as those at FOX News. It's important to recognize the difference. As I predicted as soon as the sale was announced KTVU would start to resemble other FOX O&O stations especially in the morning show dept. FOX O&O stations have he strongest morning shows in their markets and that's not a bad thing. Also, FOX and Friends recently had Motley Crue and Alice Cooper n to announce the last dates of the Crue's final tour - I didn't see them on any liberal stations. Before everyone chalks that up to marketing synergy keep in mind that Motley Crue have their own indie label so there's no benefit financially to give them air time. Also pay attention to the bumper music used on FOX News especially during "The Five", I've heard Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies and plenty of metal and punk. Why do I mention this? Because these are the same artists that the PMRC tried to destroy in the 80s. Let's not forget who led that group - Tipper Gore. So who are the true defenders of free speech?

    1. Fox rocks as a chief defender of free speech because it plays metal. Hope you didn't hurt yourself with this contortionist's logic.

    2. Anon at 2:50pm......my gosh, thanks for the good laugh. Not sure if you remember Damon Furnier, oh, excuse me, 'Alice Cooper" golfing with and schilling for President Nixon in the 70's. Yeah, a real "artist" on the "cutting edge". A calculated show biz hack who was the dumb kids version of Jim Morrison. He couldn't even get a different kind of reptile, and just hung the snake around his neck to go with the mascara. Boring, predicable and stupid, and for the last three decades, irrelevant. So, yeah, I guess that explains "The Five" and their take on most things.
Why do defenders of the right want so badly to appear hip? Like POS Tucker Carlson desperately trying to make a case for songs written in the 70's as really 'very conservative in their message".
Oh, and the year is 2015. Now that Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies and others are now used as bumper music for shows on a notoriously conservative right wing network seems about right since the members of those bands are now AARP members.
If those bands and their members are anything like Alice Cooper, Johnny Ramone and Ted Nugent, you can rest assured that now that they late 50's to late 60's in age, they have done the predictable Right Wing chicken hawk routine of being pro-war now, while in their "angry young man days" they were doing everything they could to get out of any military duty.
Douchebaggery, a core value of Right.

    3. First off, it's VINCENT Furnier (Damon s his middle name) but why let facts get in the way of a good ol' liberal insanity rant?

Your comment actually reinforces my point.

As soon as FOX News is mentioned panties are bunched up and the true fascist face of the left is revealed. Meagan Kelly could do an hour special with Wavy Gravy and a certain segment would still have a myriad of issues. Liberals love to censor arguments that they can't win.

Jim Morrison? Gimmie a break! His best career move was dying before his "fans" had a chance to realize that he was an untalented poser. I'll take the MC5 over the Doors any day. It's called show BUSINESS and what you label as a "calculating hack" is more accurately a successful entertainer. I'm not looking for conservative messages in any music from any decade - my point (which obviously was above your level of comprehension) is that FOX News does not censor opposing opinions and I used bumper music as ONE example.

Finally as all weak minded people you resort to vulgarities since you are incapable of providing a sound argument. Predictable. Anyway, it's nice to know the short buses have Wi-Fi.

    4. If they are anything like Johnny Ramone, they are spending their late 50s + in the dirt.

    7. Anon at 1:49, 11:19 is definitely a troll.

    8. Sorry, not a troll. I'm not sure which part got your Kool Ade drenched brain spinning but I meant every single word. Morrison was a joke. And don't get me started on the Lennon or Dylan or Garcia ... the whole bunch of hypocritical talentless hippies that for some reason are still held in esteem by certain folks.

Nope not a troll...but a BIG fan of the Lieberman!

  7. Rich, I'm not sure I understand your comments about Mike Amatori, it sounds to me like you don't care for him. Of course I don't know him personally, but back on the old KGO I thought his promotions was clever, creative and most of all hilarious. The ones he did of Gene Burns, and I remember when 2 pilots were found to be drunk, he did a great take on that starting with, "This is Captain Jack Daniels speaking". I don't here the same kind of promo's anymore, so perhaps Cumulus is not utilizing his talent, another back decision by them.

    1. Amatori's self-congratulatory smug voice gets grating, really fast.

And, towards the end of KGOs old self, most of his promos were nothing but edited 30 Rock clips, a show I never watched, but could easily identify, Lazy.

  8. So KGO passed over its entire roster of female talent to complete its full-time line-up of white guys. Exactly what 910 did with Ed Baxter.

A radio line-up right out of the 50s.

    1. Exactly. Many of us who belly ache the demise of the old KGO need to reflect on the fact that the replacements are usually from the same demographic except they work cheap. Whereas the old hosts were mostly white and Jewish, the new breed is all white and a little bit less Jewish. God I hate the Dickies!!!

      Delete
    2. Leaving the all-white-guy 910 lineup aside for a moment - it would be easy to blame the KGO decisions on Atlanta. But don't some of the local honchos have any pull here? Didn't any one of them say "Hey, let's give Pat Thurston a shot to get a woman's voice in the mix"? Or consider elevating Copeland to bring a non-white perspective to the full-time mix? Or if a new voice was the priority, SOMEHOW pushing for anyone besides yet another middle-class white male?

Hey, maybe they did. I'm not there, so I have to speculate. But it's sure hard to make a case that 910 or 810 serves up a sound that reflects the diversity of its potential audience. Big, big fail.
